    Hey all,

I (and by association, this site, the admins, the mods and the users) have been nominated for the Irish Internet Association's "Net Visionary for Social Contribution" award.

I honestly never thought I'd see the day when the "establishment" recognised whats going on over here, but there you go!

Online voting has opened now at http://www.netvisionary.ie/votenom.html and will remain open only for one week!

Despite always having been the Face of the A(dmin)-Team I feel weirdly self conscious about asking utter strangers to vote for me. But if you feel that we've done something to contribute to the social fabric of Ireland and the Irish through this site then I humbly ask you for 5 minutes of your time and your vote.

One last thing, the IIA have announced that they will accept only 3 votes from any one company so please dont enter Boards.ie in the Organisation field. Put your employer, uni or school there instead. Its more accurate and will prevent me ending up with like, 3 votes.

    DeV.

Get in line girl, most people have to pay for that service.

I wonder if any of the other nominees will get anywhere near your total votes, as it says on the site "Irelands biggest web based community"

Tom Murphy first went online in 1989 and quickly became involved in the USENET discussion system. An IT consultant by trade Murphy harboured a love for online interaction in any form and in 1998 he and four others
started Boards.ie. Unfunded and run with the voluntary help of 200+
moderators it employs no one and has no "head office". It is non-profit
making but despite its lack of funding it has become the Republic's biggest
community site. Founder and MD of Spin Solutions, Founder of Electronic
Frontier Ireland and regular commentator on the IT industry Murphy is known
for straight shooting and no nonsense analysis.

    ITS ALL LIES!!!

Congrats. I voted earlier BUT just to put a spanner in the works. If you read the nomination and voting rules:
    Stage 5
The voting procedure will be as follows: Anyone may vote by completing the required details on the IIA Net Visionary Voting Page. Details required are Voting Persons (a) Full Name, (b) valid E-mail address & (c) Company / Organisation.

Only one vote per person with a maximum of three voters from any one Company or Organisation. Only the first three votes received will count with the named member contact person having precedence over all other voters from the Company / Organisation.

The company must be a paid up member of the association in order to vote.

    Well done guys.

As the only one in the list who bothered to supply a bio, you would have got my vote anyway! Will there be an awards ceremony where we can get drunk and rush the stage???

Maybe we can dress up as a forest? ;)

Done. You would think that they would take the time to get a proper biography for each of the candidates in all categories rather than just a few thrown all over the place. It made the decisions on some of the other categories awkward.

There's a minimum of three Boards.ie people (including Tom) nominated.

I only knew about Alan O'Rourke (Figment) who is up for Design Excellence.

I dunno about the rules of voting, I was told people from Boards could vote though that extra line seems an addition...

its all come a long way since the subvertive socialist ideas that we used to harbour.
i remember when there were things like morals, standards, a keen ideology to not let the bástards grind us down, and an avid, almost rabid obsession to use a proxy account for playing quake.

now, its about the fame, the fortune, the money, the loose women (who should really be captured) and a benevolance that far outstrips anything that Mao-tse Tung gave to the chinese people.

having said that, andrex pusspies did make me change my mind. im such a cheap corperate whore at heart
    :)

    LOL @ WWM

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.

Boards has really changed over the years, its always amazed me in that regard. I think thats partly why, like everything else in my life, once it was reasonably successful I didnt just abandon it in the search for more shiny objects. I think its the curiousity of what its going to do next that keeps me interested! ;)

Kharn, its 27901 but can you imagine the packetloss ?! I dont think we ever ran Quake servers on Boards. MP and Rev and the boys were much better at it then we were.

And isn't John McCormack of Whoisireland (under the Tech Journalist section) our very own jmcc?

    I could be drastically wrong.

Please note you do not need to be a member of the IIA to nominate or vote for these awards.
Their homepage and T&Cs seem to disagree. Hmmmm.
