I work in Merlin Park Hospital in Galway, in the grounds department, and let me say this,
It is the softest job i've ever had in meh life.

Up until now ive been working in restaurants, bars and hotels but as anyone who has done this you will know that they always try to screw u over in what they pay you and the hours.

But in this job, ive got fixed hours, 8:30 to 5 monday to thurs, 8:30 to 4 on fri and i get weekends and bank holidays off!
My boss is reasonably laid back but he works hard. I get 2 breaks each day and on a good day those can stretch to a grand total of 2 and a half hours thats 9:30 to 10:15/30 and 12:30 to 2. We stop work at 4:30 and if it happens to rain, and it does quite often, we stay inside, and only go outside for brekkie and lunch. biggrin.gif this job is sweeeet! biggrin.gif

    Beat that! tongue.gifsmile.gif

Having worked in a "highly respected" hotel for almost 2 years i'd like to agree with what you just said about screwing you over on hours and pay and if that isn't enuff when they see that you really want your deserved pay they take your job away for no reason...thank god the government has employed ppl to fight for workers rights is all i have to say.

IMHO if your looking for long time work stay well away from them, having said that i have only worked in 1 hotel and only heard of what goes on in others but it all sounds the same to me....their just about all right for 2/3 months over the summer anything more and its different kettle of fish.

<u touched a sore subject, had to rant, i'd of said a LOT more but god knows who reads this>

Bizzare coincidence. Back in 1988 I worked with Sean Fergus in the grounds department of Merlin Park cutting grass all summer long.

I used to go to bed at night, close my eyes and still see grass in front of me....

Up until recently I had a respectable, decently paid and fun job in Cyrona Software in Dublin... designing and writing web sites. It was a great company to work for and it was a shame that things went the way they did there (most of us made redundant due to f3ck-all sales)...

Nowadays I'm job hunting while collecting (well earned) social welfare payments and writing and maintaining the IrelandOffline web site.

Just this week I have started part time work in a bar in north county Dublin. You probably won't know it and I probably won't name it wink.gif

DMT International. A software house doing systems for the finical and insurance sectors in the US and Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Its an ok place to work for (Heres where Dav starts complaining about not being able to listen to music and wear slacks and shirt)
The hours can be a bit much when a deadline is coming close. eg

Boss: You have 8.5 days starting from next monday to have this done.
Me: But I wont be able to start on Moday as I have another 6 days work on the other project you have me on to do first. And 8.5 isn't enought anyway.
Boss: Thats right ok you get the other project finished first then you have 2.5 days to have it done.
Me: Well at least get someone to help me on it
Boss: OK I'll get X to do a part of it
Narative: two weeks later and .5 of a day left to finish.
Me: Ahhh X hasn't even started on his part and it was promised to me yesterday.
Boss: Oh ya you'll have to do that part I meant to tell you.

As you can see the above can lead to very very late nights frown.gif

Senior Reporter on CTW, which is the weekly trade magazine/newspaper for the games industry. It's a pretty cool job - a lot of stress, simply because producing a weekly magazine is a huge amount of work, everything is to deadlines, and we're also up to a pile of other stuff that saps up time, like ECTS, E3 and various other events we're involved with.

However, I do get lots of free kit, early releases of games, and generally get to wh0re it up at industry parties and stuff. And I get to work with games for a living (even if I don't get time to play 'em in the office much)... So it's all worth it, and pretty good fun smile.gif

here here to all those people who say that hotels treat their staff very badly. i'm working in a hotel atm, in housekeeping. The main problem is that the management are too tight to employ enough staff, it's peak season and my department is running on a skeleton staff of 5/6 ppl for 100 rooms. It's not very nice, i made roughly 100 beds today frown.gif , then they insult you by trying to screw you out of wages owed to you. So now i'm going to go somewhere and keel over.... wink.gif

I was working in Lidl in Kildare,
it just opened up and we were all puttin in huge hours gettin stuff done. Grossly under-staffed, working 12hr shifts with a 30mins break if any, and even that was givin to you at their descression. Pain cashin up. All in all a shabby operation. Oh and then they fired me today not that its all up and running. fired a friend of mine yesterday too. Just knockin us off now that they don't need us. That right Vin?
Hope i get the money i'm due, i've heard bad tales about it!
Didn't even get a reason why i was fired today, just "you arn't suited to Lidl" get bent like...
Stuff's cheap there, but then again you do get what you pay for!

aye such a bad place to work, i didn't really do anything wrong at all, i think there trying to make examples out of people that if u dont put in a full 100% effort ure out of a job. I worked 14hrs in there once with a 30minute break all day, i've done 12hrs a few times, some days u dont get breaks at all. Id advise anyone to stay away from the place the money u get is not worth it. And one day the manager rang me on my day off to come in, i didnt' want to come in so i just said i was busy, he consistenly asked me over and over what i was doing that i was busy and couldnt come in. I just said i was busy and after the 5th time he hanged up saying that was a loosy excuse. what a **** like!

I work for myself in a company myself and my friend set up...

...it's good cause it means I'm my own boss.....

...which is bad because it means I have to stress out about everything going well and getting work and ****. When you don't get a regular pay check at the end of every week you can go through some mighty lean times.

But I'm starting college in September so work will be only part-time then. (And will probably fizzle out because I won't have the time to chase new clients)

I'm 22 and my business has never been in debt which I think is not a bad achievement.

    We're web designers.

You can imagine where it goes from here. --- He fixes the cable?

I was in a similar position before, but you can see that this here is a typical strategy used by poor project management. I hate these type of ppl. They live in la la land, thinking that as long as they don't have to do it, it will be done, and it will be done when they say so. They haven't a clue.

I met with a project manager yesterday who has been employed by companies all over the place. He has soooo much experience in the Software Industry it puts all of us guys to shame. He knew what he was talking about, and critisized a lot of ppl out there (well due stuff too). I distinctly remember him describing ppl like the one Kayos was on about from DMT. He sympathised with an incident I had with a web company in the past (taking avantage of college students).

Ja know I would love to start a thread that named and dished the dirt about companies we've had experience with. TBH Dav if that's the way DMT are, take your stuff and give them the finger, before they make a muppet out of you. Kealan, you seem to be making OK money there, but you're work doesn't seem to differ too much.
