Coca Cola Ad - Strange

    hey everybody!

I just want to let you know of a recent discovery of mine. I had my little cousin down over the weekend, she is a handful and is always active and running around, except on one fifteen second occasion!

The "Coke" ad appeared on the screen(The one where the coloured woman is singing"I wish I could share.....etc." and she is giving out all the free coke).

We were amazed, she is very rarely interseted in anything! Today I was watching the ad I watched closely and carefully, to see why she was so interested.

I was amazed to see something i have never before saw on this ad. To the right of the coloured woman there is occasional white bright flashes, maybe two or three on each occasion. I was thinking to myself "I saw this ad maybe 20-30 times before why havent i seen this before"

    A method of hypnotism perhaps????

Have a look at it and tell me what ye think....

    Freaky

I've seen the ad (who hasn't!) but haven't noticed this yet and was told of these flashes last night. Its most likely a lot less sinister than you're expecting though...

I know the ad, don't particulary like it ... never noticed the flashs or the coke head, must keep an eye out of it the next time i watch T.V.

    I think they're edit points.

Remember U2's video for "The Sweetest Thing", Bono and his wife on the carraige on Fitzwilliam St.

Those flashes appeared many times(after Boyzone jumped on the back, etc) and the overall effect was that it was done in one take.

When I noticed the flashes on the Coke ad, I figured thats what it must be also.

    I maybe wrong though.

I've seen that ad hundreds of time but I've never noticed the flashing till now and its very obvious. I don't know if they changed the ad recently or this thread just highlighted it.

ive noticed the flashes, thought it was a weird special effect, companies love to put them in nowadays for absolutley anyhting "woah sfx dooood! excellent!" . possibly there is something subliminal about the ad. INTERESTING :shifty eyes:

The one where the coloured woman is singing

erm i don't think i've seen this ad but what colour is the woman?

    green?
    blue?
    red?

actually i lied i have seen it but for some reason i don't like the term "coloured" when someone is talking about a person ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

And if you watch really closely, it's also sending young kids a message to buy cigarettes!

"Smoke.... Smoke..... Are you smoking yet?!"

    hey,

same here ciaran500, didnt see it till today, i watched it again the second flash near the end of the ad seem to shine off her earrings. Here is what I think:

What colour is the woman?(hehe...nows ur time to shine cremo)
    What colour is coke?
When the light shines off her head she may appear like a big bottle of coke.....??who knows?? :p
Why didnt they get a white person to do it?

I wudn't mind recording the song she sings and play it backwords, you'd never know :D

It might have sumtin to do with subliminal messaging like weemcd said:
possibly there is something subliminal about the ad. INTERESTING :shifty eyes:

Here is a link to a site regarding this theory:
    Subliminal

Ever see that film Event Horizon? It is meant to use Subliminal Messaging.

Ever see Brainiac. they were doing something on this topic b4. i watched the whole show and there was numerous micro-second flashes during the show. at the end of the show they asked "Did you get a drink of water while watching this show" and sure enough i did!! they showed how they did it little quick messages saying "YOU ARE THIRSTY"....wow.

That ad annoys me and I always mute when it comes on but more because of the annoyingly catchy tune rather than any subliminal messages, I'd say. Boy am I glad I stopped drinking Coke!

if you go to mikadosoc.ie..in the polemics forum theres a thread called the coke ad...this discusses the possibility of subliminal messaging (dono how to put in a link to it or even if im allowed to!)though personally i agree that its prob just from the editing process...an international company like coca cola are not going to do somethings as illegal as subliminal messages with all the lawyers they're bound to have!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

I havent noticed that before I must say :/

However, I know that when I was a child I was attracted to flashing lights ("oooh shiny is preeeettty"), so maybe that was why your cousin was so involved with it!

    Just a suggestion :)

I can remember the last time I seen this ad before iI read this topic and can remember sparkles, which I though was some kind of reflection of car windows or her earings.

Anyway, if anyone wants to know why they chose this women to do the ad was because it was a failed promo for her single, which I don't think made it into the top 40 both sides of the Irish pond!

Watched it last night, very strange flashes. Made me hate George Bush, but then again I felt like that before I saw the ad !!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭Furp

I noticed the flashs from the first time I saw the ad in the cinema.

I don't think they are anything more than reflections of light straight back into the camera lens, I assumed they are on purpose though as that ad has a distinctive cinematography style.

Almost light a 70's look or something I think that Heineken add with Prague in it has a similar colour palette and cinematography style.

I thought the saps that she gives the bottles to, just drink them with the tops left on.

    Either way, its wrong.

Its not sublimimel messagses. I checked with a frame-by-frame video recoder. There's a few flashes, half way down, and three quaters to the right.

Its just another anti-coke thing. Like the "don't drink coke cos a friend of a neighbour did a good deed for a palastani, and he said not to drink coke after 10/9..." hoax's.

palastani? 10/9? Is there a hidden message in that comment somewhere? :D

This ad also came up on another thread here related to the worst ads on TV. It is weird that the lady in question would hand out open bottles of coke. Weirder still that complete strangers would drink them.

They say there is no such thing as bad advertising, and that this ridiculous ad at least has us talking about the product.. but seriously, another one of these Coke ads and the product will become permanently associated with silly singing nitwits.

Not to worry anyway, it'll soon be replaced with the 'Holidays are coming' one. I'd expect that to start as soon as Haloween is over icon8.gif Stupid Coke and their stupid ads.

I've never noticed the flashes in the ad before, but then I don't pay much attention to ads.

I agree, saw the flashes when I first saw the ad and if you look closely she's got very large metallic type chandalier earings on. I just assumed that that was what the flashes were?
I'll have a look the next time I see it though.

It's just an ad, for jimmy's sake. Some people have serious issues with Coca Cola. Did it make you fat, and you're blaming it now? Aww, poor babies.

Must look out for that add... actually no... screw that.
I've seen that add come on TV before, but I always change the station... coke is manky crap and the manufacturers are evil.

I've definitely seen the flashes, but I've hated that ad ever since it came on. Not really sure why, it just sickens me. I actualy won't stay in a room with it on...

    So yeah, subliminal messaging? Maybe...

This is one of those ads that makes me dive stunt man like for the remote to avoid it. I wonder do those subliminal messages have the opposite effect with certain kinds of people. i.e. people with no tolerance for utter tripe on their tv.

Did you leave to go buy a bottle of Coke, or did you just wander around looking for a black chick handing out free samples? ;)

My theory is that the flashes are there deliberately to make it appear like a possible borderline subliminal ad. It's done to get people talking about the ad, like we are doing now. How many people so far have said they will make a point of looking out for the Coke ad?

    It's reverse subliminal advertising.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

The scary part is that somehow kids might get the idea that is ok to take Coke from strangers. The bottles even look as if they are already open, which is even worse.

I saw the coke ad last night and made a point of looking for the flashes. Their actually quite noticable when you know they're there. The last one seemed to be a flash off her ear ring, but was way to bright to be accidental, they must have been set up this way.

Anyway, I don't really care and won't be paying particular attention to this ad any more.

I never noticed before but I watched it again (without even blinking) and I saw 5 flashes. They seem to be coming from the distance, it's probably just a reflection of the sun off a building maybe. I don't think it's her Pat Butcher earrings though.
