ie is one of the worst.

I've been using firefox for the last couple of months, and i find it a whole lot easier/smarter to use than IE. Also that cub fox picture that someone has as there sig, is just too cute.

I reckon this will just turn into a "G'wan the open source browser!" thread, but does anyone actually prefer IE? You'll probably get a bunch of people saying "Mozilla!" "Firefox!" "Opera!" "Netscape!" "Safari!" "Konqueror!" "Galeon!" "Links!" "Amaya!" "Lynx!" "W3M!" "Mosaic!" but will anyone stand up and say "Internet Explorer!"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭mr_angry

    No.

    Opera all the way!

IMO Firefox is the best out there, more easy and convient to use.

Should really be a poll, anyways Firefox is the best for what I do.

    Yes.

Why? Firefox consumes more memory and thus takes longer to start up, becomes especially apparent on an older machine. If IE is used properly (ActiveX, Javascript and all that other gubbins is disabled) then you will never get spyware, ad-ware and all that other crap unless you start download strange files. Also, I'm familar with the commands, layout and shortcuts for IE, I can't be bothered 're-learning' them for another browser.

Also, if people think that Firefox is a completely safe browser then they're deluded. Do a google search on Firefox and exploit or security hole. Maybe there aren't as many holes as IE but they're still there nonetheless. If you want a truly safe internet experience, then consider a thin client.

isnt that just IE with extra features?

Doh indeed. I admit it I clicked it. Firefox choked and dumped me out with a Netscape Error message.

I'm loading up IE now to check out what I am missing.

On the original question - I'm pretty much a firefox convert (as opposed to a zealot) mainly because it seems much less vulnerable to pop ups spyware and all that crap. I like tabbed browsing too. I do have a couple of gripes about firefox:

    1) Every so often it chokes on a web page that IE handles just fine. I know this is usually a fault in the web page but it is annoying.

    2) I am still using a 56k modem and Firefox's support for dialup networking is much worse than IE. It won't hang up the modem automatically after you exit for example.

Yes, so basically they prefer IE. I don't like the IE look it's plain, old looking ( in Win2k I don't use WinXP ) and also I don't see why I should go out of my way to patch IE using those shells other have linked to just so that MS can keep their market share. Na sorry IE is just not up to it and I'm not going to go running around fixing IE when there is an excellent, open source, community-driven, multi-platform, free alternative out there. I really don't want to live in a world where the web is controlled by MS and where web design can't advance because they are too lazy to implement new standards or they implement broken standards so as to hinder competition. That's not my vision of the web. If someone has a difficulty in switching between IE and firefox because of the new commands and layout then they either have a learning deficiency or are clinically braindead.

Firefox *can* be slow on older PCs, but most things are :)
I prefer to use firefox whenever I can, but for some applications I am still forced to use IE

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭JackKelly

i decided to bite the bullet and go with Firefox after hearing everyone love it.

It is sooooooo much better than IE.w00t.

Any one know of some good skins? Been looking at deviantart.com and i cant see anything special

I'll nth the suggestion of Firefox.

By the way, if you're running an older machine where Firefox is sluggish, try K-meleon, a Gecko based browser that uses native Windows GUI code rather than XUL.

    I'm currently using Firefox on a 550MHz PIII :(

Although Firefox can be slow to load initially, I find it loads webpages faster than IE for me, especially forum sites, like boards.ie here. I have tried Opera too and although it's slightly faster at loading pages than IE, Firefox is better.

i was using IE but it doesnt work anymore (crashes all the time) so i have been using opera for about 6 months never had any probs with it... its also great for not filling up your taskbar :D

I'm quite happy with IE TBH. One feature I like in IE is that you can drop folders into the links folder and have loads of drop down menus of favorites. Thats handy. Because of work and the fact that most corporates have a locked down desktops which includes IE, most of my time is spent in IE anyway so I just can't be bothered running with different browsers unless I need to check for compatibility with them. I have tried Opera, Firefox and never found enough difference to persuade me to change to them. If you have a decent web connection, speed issues are usually down to the host site, most decent machines these days speed isn't an issue on the client side. Unless your still on dialup of course.

Wow. Sorry I'm in such a state of shock that someone actually *likes* the default IE. I mean it's sh1t! It's like total crap, how anyone can browse using it is just beyond belief.

Opera. Its got all the features firefox has escept more, like you can highlight an address thats not a live link, right click and click go and it goes to the address. No bull****ing around coping the link, deleting the address thats already in the bar, paste the link and then pressing enter. Waste of energy, ye im a lazy bastard.
It takes awhile to get it laid out the way you want cos the layout on the new versiosn is ****e. Nice skins for it too.

I dont understand this trend these days with people who put firefox in there sigs and wearing firefox t shirts. Sad bastards, its a web brower for **** sake

Firefox can do that too, except it takes it further, converting the dead link into a live one that can be clicked instantly.

Opera for me, cause it's by far the fastest (graphical browser) on my crawly PC. Were it not for speed, I'm not sure which I'd use.

What's the connection between the wee red panda and firefox by the way?

    1. no - if you change to firefox, there's an option to import them from IE
    2. Both browsers will be available, you don't have to get rid of IE (you probably can't actually get rid of it - fúck you microsoft!!!)
    3. ???

Went from IE to Mozilla to Firefox back to IE.
I really liked firefox for the tabbing and neat security stuff but in the end there isn't a hell of a difference between IE and firefox imho.
The way firefox dls stuff ticked me off.

Btw, have any of you firefox users tried the tab browser extensions,
    I found them really handy

I like firefox. Converted from IE about a year ago.

btw rmulryan, you can configure firefox so that it downloads files in a similar fashion to IE.

Didn't notice this in the version i used a few months ago.
Is this a relatively new feature or did i just miss it?
Think i'll stick with IE for the mo. ;)

Opera. I like when you push the back button it instantly reloads the last page or last open window. You can't do that in IE or Firefox. I still use IE on the few pages Opera can't handle.

So if Opera is faster and IE more functional, what does firefox have that makes everyone like it?!

i like its layout but thats a personal preference
firefox is also open source isnt it?

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that microsoft told everyone to use it instead of ie there awhile ago
