When starting off back exercises is it better to start with some endurance training on a rowing machine, jump straight into 3x8 cable rows (with warm-up) or to mix it up a bit with both?

A rowing machine will do next to nothing for your back. Use the cable row with a manageable weight and excellant form.

Do you recommend an ordinary seated row or a straight back row or are both alright?

In the second gif you linked to the Guy on exrx.net is known as "Bad form guy". I wouldn't copy his form on any exercise, see the massive rounding off of his back he does? (incidentally much the same bad form Arnie uses in 'Pumping Iron')

The first link is the on to go for. Keep the back straight with a natural spinal curve through the lower back, keep the shoulders well back and chest out, pull to chest good controlled slow movement and release. Rinse and repeat.
