Don't know if you'd call it a twist, but I definitely did not see the ending of "Dead or Alive" coming!

    Memento has a good ending.

Vertigo should win by virtue of the fact that the "twist" is revealed halfway through the film, yet the film remains entertaining throughout.

Got to be Planet of the Apes - back in the days when twists weren't fashionable! And Psycho as well, for that matter.

I also enjoyed the twist at the end of Angel Heart. Very underratted film IMO.

    Usual Suspects...yep.
    Fight Club...yep.
Saw??? No way. Contrived doesn't even begin to describe it.
    Memento...yep.

    Others :

    Ringu
Halloween 4's ending was pleasantly surprising too, given the bog-standardness of the rest of the film (and, arguably, the entire series after the first one)

    Definetly Memento

You know, now that I think of it... Halloween 4 did indeed have a pretty good twist. Wouldn't mind seeing the film again at some stage.

    Angel Heart

Um... Identity? Didn't everybody see the twist coming from the opening credits?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,008 ✭✭✭rabbitinlights

Seven - The bad guy "wins"

Angel heart - seen it for the first time during the week - how have i not seen that before?

    Sixth sense - Great idea

Fight Club - Amazing ending for a great film!

Planets of the apes - The Statue scene.

Usual Suspects - The walking scene.

Let's be honest people, no twist will ever compare with these words 'I am your father.'

There's just no comparison. Best movie twist EVER.

Was just about to post that...the first time you see Empire and Vader makes his revelation, well...no-one saw that coming...

    "CONfidence"

Pretty similar to the usual suspects but twisty all the same!

A Tale of Two Sisters is deadly as it combines different genres at the same time, I scene in particular is really jumpy and it's not every day that I get scared during a movie :)

Every single surprise in Sleuth is a masterstroke. Old flick with only 2 cast members - Lawrence Olivier & Michael Caine for the spotty kids out there.

I mean c'mon...... Talk about "Hello my name Mr Snurb"

It's almost as bad as an Charlie Sheen straight to video awful invasion of the body snatchers rip off where the lead alien is called Senator Neila.

Actually come to think of it the 70s invasion of the body snatchers movie with Donald Sutherland has got a mean twist in the tail.

    But.. that's not the twist.

As a matter of fact, the actual twist relies on everyone having figured out that De Niro is the devil.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,862 ✭✭✭mycroft

    Har Har
months pass and our intrepid heroine Brooke Adams has been living in the wild as more and more people are taken over, meanwhile Donald Sutherland has been living among the aliens posing as one, Adams starving and freezing ventures out from the undergrowth and beckons Sutherland over, he turns and utters one of those ear shattering piercing alien screams, and Adams realises she is the last human being alive, and she starts to scream, it hold on Sutherland screaming for f*cking ever, it's really really really unnerving

Yeah but it's bloody obvious it's telegraphed in Micky Rourke's character everything from his name, his mysterious background, it's like having Verbal Kent performing card tricks for Agent Kujan

Memento was a great twist - one of my favs.

But if you want a real twist "The Cassandra Crossing" has to be the best:
The whole film is about a plague that breaks out on a long haul train. The plague spreads and most of the film up is about the passengers finally getting the plague quarantined. They are put on an old line to keep them away from populated areas and they are told where to stop. As they approach their stop they have to cross an old bridge called the cassandra crossing. Everyone is happy and you are in the middle of the happy ending and thinking "jez that was a great film" and picking up your popcorn bags when they realise they are being driven to their deaths over the old bridge. The bridge collapses and there is about 10 minutes of shots of carriages going off the bridge - horrific stuff - but the main characters manage to save their carriage. You still have your empty popcorn bags in your hand when the movies ends 10 minutes later wondering "what the hell?!" Absolutely brill.

I actually liked that rip off - it was a lot better than the other one with Donald later on with the cane, real made for TV cop out ending.

Liked the bit in the 70's version where the restrauant owner was telling him the object was a caper :)

It's not a rip off it's a re make, and very intelligent one too. The original was a metaphor of the Mc Carthy witchunts in the 50s (the ideal of conforming etc) the 70s ver took the themes of the original and reworked as a metaphor for post watergate america, the paranoia and fear and suspicious. It's one of the great 70s paranoia movies, like Coppola's the conversation.

And yeah i hate the Abel Ferrara remake from the 90s but I loath all his films.

bored of a monday afternoon and saw this so will give my (humble) opinion!

    1) usual suspects (knocked me for 6 that one)
    2) Kill Bill 2 with the exploding heart thing - excellent and up to that point thought she would snuff it!
    3) sixth sense

as for the twist ending that still puzzles me has to be the Village - didnt like the way that ended at all but good film apart from that

How's that a twist? It doesn't turn the story in any way it's just a shock ending.

The Cassandra Crossing's a great film, the sort of film RTE should have as the Big Big Movie. And it has two Irishmen, Harris and Sheen, well mostly Harris. Plus he shows that top neurosurgical virus-beating 'adventure scientists' come from Limerick!

Thought the ending to American History X was good, where it looks like its going to be happy ending and then, ah i wont spoil it!

Without a doubt - PRIMAL FEAR - Worth three hours of watching Richard Gere's inaccurate portrayal as a lawyer just for the last moments of the movie. Easily my favourite ending. Launched Ed Norton's career.

    Steven King's 'The Mist'

    Layer Cake

London Boulevard - or another Colin Farrell movie.. He gets stabbed in the end.
