well just to be pedantic, and cos i wanted to know my self, i got this from dictionary.com

So the way im reading that is a cartoon is a drawing. What we see as cartoons ie Bugs bunny is in fact, and was originally called an *animated* cartoon. It got shortened in everyday slang use to just 'cartoon'. So you are all slightly wrong...and all slightly right.

dilbert comic strip = cartoon
Bugs etc = animated cartoon
starship troopers = animation (though in everyday slang it has as much right to be called a cartoon)

southpark = all of the above
