Weird feeling when lifting heavy weights

    I've noticed a weird feeling sometime when lifting weights. It kind of feels like it's in the bone, or maybe the muscle just next to the bone. Feels like a sort of clicking, like the bone is under stress as I'm lifting the weight. Happens a lot until I go easy on the weights. My muscles are well able to handle the weight I put on them, and AFAIK my bones are strong and healthy (I've never broken a bone in my life, never suffered from stress fractures or anything). Is this cause for concern?

    I've experienced this myself. I was told it's caused by friction in your joints. Could be something to do with your diet.

    I sometimes get this 'clicking' in my shoulders when doing shoulder presses - I thought it was just down to not being warmed up enough. Its not a regular thing though so I havent been worrying about it =)

    If its a constant thing then there is obviously something wrong - maybe you're not doing the exercise properly?

    Clicking in joints is usually caused by the rapid movement of synovium and/or ligaments over a joint. It can also be caused by a vacumn in the joint which is filled by a gas bubble causing a popping sound.

    If you're getting clicking while shoulder pressing be very careful. It may be due to the rotator cuff, if you feel any pain or discomfort outside of normal strenous effort then stop. Be sure to properly warm up shoulders before heavy pressing and make sure form is spot on.

    If there's no pain then the clicking is perfectly normal and happens to some people more than others.

    Its been happening to me lately too. My left shoulder 'clicks' at the bottom of a dumbell press. I'm at the end of a programme now, so I'll do something completely different to give my shoulder a rest.

    Try taking Glucosamine Sulphate to help with repair, and fish oil to help lubricate the joint.

    Clicking doesn't indicate damage and I'm not sure what you mean by 'repair' here, Glucosamine helps in the repair of cartilage in joints but clicking wouldn't necessarily indicate a cartilage degeneration issue and if it did you'd be much better off seeking medical help. However Glucosamine itself will help to replenish synovial fluid in joints thus helping with lubrication. Flaxseed, flaxseed oil, flax oil and linseed oil are also all good lubricators.

    Hi there,

    I had the same problem myself for a while. A friend of mine said it was because, although my muscles were flexabile enough, the joint wasn't used to being moved through it's full range of motion. He showed me a series of isometirc stretches, and joint mobility exercies and that sorted it out and increased my flexability.

    If your interested he gave me a few books on the subject, the best of which were by Pavel Tsatsouline, entitled Realx to Stretch and Super Joints. If you want I can probably photocopy the pages dealing with the shoulders or any other body part, and mail them out to you.

    you'd prolly want to get it checked out by a doc, if its nothing, thats fine but if it is something, better catch it early
