I was just looking through some jobs sites for the work placement we have to do this year.

I seem to come accross the same companies all the time like IBM and microsoft, can anyone else think of some IT companies that I could look into?
I've searched all the main job sites like monster etc

Oracle n Sun Microsystems do student placements too...Microsoft pay one of the best & have jus increased the salary to €21789...not bad (for placement) I know a guy who was only gettin €150 a week & doing a 39 hour week

It doesn't have to be IT companies that you work for. Any medium to large company with an IT department would be suitable. I worked for Glanbia (one of the world's biggest dairy businesses) last year in my placement.
Others in my class worked for companies like Wyeth (pharmaceuticals), the army, county councils, ISP's, etc.

Thanks, I'm still stuck as to what sort of company I want to go into, but Microsoft pay seems a lot :o! Although I looked online on the MS site and it says there placement is for 1year I'll scoot around the website though

    Thankyou

Do not go with Oracle, I did a placement with them and it was sheer hell. Nearly had to be put on anti-depressants. They seriously **** you up.

The work consisted of "type in a, see does it crash, type in b see does it crash. Oh it crashed? Ah it's not like we've let you near anything important, so ignore it and continue your busy work" for the ENTIRE 12 MONTHS, despite promises from week 1 of "oh, we've great things planned, projects, development etc. etc., you're going to learn so much. Starting next week" and lasting for the entire duration, of which nothing came of it.

You wouldn't mind but I was one of the top breed of students, and co-workers had even commented on my aptitude and said it to my manager several times. At one point, another manager took me onto his team where they were working on an interesting project, but my manager immediatley dragged me back to continue my ****e. (even though it was a low period for her and I both wasn't needed and it wasn't taking any of my time). I pleaded with her that I knew how to manage my time and work on both, but she was having none of it. I'll end with ****ing cow.

That aint such a bad idea there tomtom, is that what you went to oz for, work??
The problem is what in the hell are we ment to be learning out of these jobs?
Is it just a chance to get ur foot in the door somewhere?
Plus oz or japan would mean gettin some €€€ to get there not to mention actually locating work!

Point of getting work experience; your useless if you don't.
A college will not teach you anything practical which is worthwhile, you get job, and start from scratch again.
Nothing/very little of what you learn in college can be used again

Isn't the point of an Education to have the ability to learn on your own time, and inititive ?
The reason someone employs you after getting diploma/degree -- is the fact that the piece of paper tells them you can learn on your on accord, if they say 'do blah for us', and you have no idea how to do blah, you sit on front of google for a day, learn how, and then do it ?

Stop whinging - is that all this forum is for ?

    enough said

There is theroy, and what really happens.
Point of education is learning on own time / initititive, etc, however, third level education has reduced to the level of 2nd level [learn off + regurgitate], so a lot of people don't learn on their own time, take the time to research, hence their useless, and their first chance of getting experience, or being useful is after they get a job.

Problem is that Third level education is changing - it used to be the case; degree == job.
Now it's case where degree == interview, or they will at least read to the bottom of your CV.

I think Micrsoft only do one year internships but if you can get in there for work experience or an internship it is well worth it

Sure, go do work experience at the root of all evil. Next you'll be advising people to try for €ircon or... pfft, Esat.

sometimes you have to get your hands dirty to get a little work done, just think of all the medical advancements hitler brought us through testing **** on the jews in the holiday camps he set up for them.

Microsoft is great place to work.
Buy stuff in MS store for sfa, they threat their employees brillantly.
They were recently advised to reduce amount of benefits they give employees, as they give far more than any other company.
Personally would love to work there at some point.

Without them would you even be using a computer today? They are a necessary evil even if they did make their way to the top through slightly less than honourable means. And yes they would be a fantastic company to get an internship/work placement with.

Yes, without them I probably would be using a computer today. Although it would probably be a nice clean efficient Mac. I'm not denying that they wouldnt be a nice place to work for, evil companies generally are. But dont be surprised if you found you've left with a tail and some small horns.

Oh, and evil is never necessary, thats just what people say to justify it to themselves.

    you couldnt afford a mac.
and just so you know Microsoft make more money PER MAC than Apple do.
Did you know the first MS OS was called Xenix..it was Unix.
Without microsoft there would more than likely be an economic collapse in many many countries.

I hate to tell you, but if it wasn't for microsoft/ibm there would be no home computers these days, it was them that brought computers to the home. Apple improved on their ideas and made them easier to use, but if it had been a case of apple being the only vendor in the 70's/80's we wouldn't be using computers now, they wouldn't have been pressured into making their computers affordable(relatively anyway) and they would have put themselves out of business.

So no you wouldn't be using your home computer without microsoft.

Is there some not-so-secret conspiracy here I'm missing.

I just made an innocent comment that was meant to be taken in jest and I'm pounced upon. Weird, huh?

As for my sig, Ruaidhri, take it up with the admins, dont go using it as some kind of witty comeback on this board.

Sure it is a gif but its tiny, as DeVore has often said sometimes they give people a little leway, I can only assume since my sig hasnt been butchered that nobody really has a problem with it, except you apparently.

Now, either get back on topic or start another thread.
The End. (Consider this your warning)
