    Hi Gline,

I was on the old Breeze@home 512 package in Inchicore coming off the Guinness tower and had terrible problems for several months with a practically unusable service.

After a lot of hassle, IBB eventually told me to go lump it or upgrade to the 1Meg Lite option on the Business (VL) equipment.

I eventually opted to migrate over and apart from some initial problems it has worked like a dream.

Pings to irish/uk sites tend to be in the 10-30ms range as compared to 100-300ms with Breeze.

Downloads are in the 110-125 range fairly consistently.

So, despite a lot of reservations and worries, their 1meg option actually seems to deliver what it says on the tin. I've just put a few pings/tracerts below which I've just done now (8pm which should be fairly typical)

Pretty much the same story as the above, but i got switched to the VL equipment several months ago (i must have been one of the first). I've never regretted going to the 1meg option.

Are the pings steady like that? I was under the impression that IBB pings weren't too steady, but if they're like that I'd consider going with them. (UTV contracts expires in a few months)

There is no such thing as an "IBB ping". IBB offer a number of different services, using different technologies that have radically different performance characteristics.

I keep asking them to change me over from 512k 8:1 but they consistently say yeah no problem, will be done by 2moro and its been 3 weeks now lol

But im a little worried by other reports based on possibly contention issues...

Ah well I'll find out myself eventually i guess :)

Everyone i know that has IBB has had problems with them, and i mean EVERYONE. From unusale connections to stopping peer to peer from downloading at full speed, also not charging people for a whole year. The only reason im goin with them is , i dont have any choice, i dont have a phoneline and very little money, so they are the cheapest wireles solution, i'll try them out, if i start having trouble i will just have to get no internet access :(

On the VL equipment the pings tend to be fairly reliable, the ones quoted above were very good, even for VL but 20-30ms is typical, but on the old Breeze equipment it was a joke. That being said, their customer support used to be brutal, but has improved, maybe 'cos I'm paying more :)

I havent any experience of Ripwave, but a lot of the problems discussed here in the threads relate to Ripwave or the old Breeze equipment. I don't think you will find any negative VL users. (at least not yet)

Had it installed yesterday. Very happy so far. Guys arrived on time and did the business. Pings very similar to Narcom's as listed above. Actually a couple of milliseconds faster most of the time!!

When the guy showed me a download it was at 123 KB/sec, at about 11am. After six I downloaded a patch at about 63KB/sec.

Its a great serive and pings are far better than DSL or ADSL with Eircom or Digiweb ect.

Well worth the money :- download speeds up to 154kps

What more could you want !!!

Ad you dont need phone line !!!!!

But find out where the mast is !!!!!

U dont need a phoneline, i have heard weather can affect the service, but it would have to be extreme conditions and i dont think it would adversly affect it. Anyone any experience with this????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,814 ✭✭✭Drapper

I was told NTL was the best but only Rishbroadband are offering unlimited upload and download !!!! The usual limit is 1gb a day !! and they start to charge on DSL if you exceed the quota !!!

A good movie will be about 850mga so that is so little !!!!

    Stick to IBB

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭neokenzo

IBB site seems to be down. No cap on IBB?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,605 ✭✭✭gline

nah theres no cap on IBB, so u know what that means (24 hour downloading), heheheh. Paying per meg after 1 gig limit is ridiculuous , u could clock up a hugh bill, especially getting music and films and games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,814 ✭✭✭Drapper

They are updating thier site at the moment as the information is out of date !!!

Thier Tech Support is run by a load of thicks !!! but make sure before the guy leaves it tis WORKING !!! as it take a few days for them to call back out !!!

Although it is 1meg connection most people are clocking 1.5 meg at quiet times "the we small hours !!!! Less traffic !!!

We have had it here for about 4 months now. Only once had a problem. Downloads with Bittorrent or any other Peer 2 peer generally run at full speeds. and as for gaming, whilst downloading and uploading @ 60K/s my friend was still getting a ping of 30-50ms on UK servers on my PC.

As reguards their no capp. There is none, we have been downloading constantly here, with my flatmate getting about 7gigs in the space of 40hours. I have hosted peers to in BT and uploaded over 10gigs.

Also, where bouts in rathmines/ranelagh are you, and do you know which station you shall be connecting to? If its baggot St and you start causing us lag i shall KEIL YOU!

Does anyone know how big the aerial for the Breeze 1MB Lite system is and is it easy to take down if you were moving flat etc

is this option cheaper than getting a phone line in?

I've worked at a place that had IBB installed before. The aerial isnt that big. A lot smaller than a tv dish. Nevertheless, I think only IBB can take it down and re-install it for you but dont quote me on that. Thats the logical thing imo.

I'd say its no more than a meter high (in my case any way, i think it can be up to 2m). Has a white diamond shaped flat panel at the top about A4 size, with a little green light. Its resonably discrete sticking up off the chimney! For example from some angles you cant see it at all.

The installation is €150 and then €48.40 a month. Not sure of the cost of phone installation, but I doubt its dearer than this.

I honestly think it will take way longer than 3-4 weeks. They said that to me and its been 2 weeks and i rang them and they said probably about 4-6 weeks. i cant wait :D

It took me three weeks to the day to get it. When I rang after two weeks the guy said I should expect to here from the installation manager the next week. Sure enough I got a phone call one week later at about 4pm to ask did I want it installed at 9am the next day! Lucky I was free! :)

I know of someone who did it before, it is possible to see connecttions that are near you, so he said

Thats not good news is it. Surely there must be some kind of security measures.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭Blaster99

The internet is open, so whether your link to the mast is open or not doesn't really matter in the greater scheme of things. The real problem, for them, is to ensure that only paying customers connect to their mast.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭neokenzo

So if someone connects to it the connection, its connecting to their mast and not connecting to my connection?

    gline wrote:

Fine, you can probably see the signal, but you won't be able to use it. I believe the "magic box" they supply you with locks onto the mac address of the ethernet card you connect it to, and then only traffic to/from that card can actually be sent to and from IBB.

Also, i believe IBB told me before that the connections get encrypted, but i don't know of any way to verify that...

Its possible your friend was thinking of peoples wireless routers. Sometimes people forget to enable security options on their router, and end up broadcasting a signal to everyone within range, allowing them to connect to the router, and thus access the internet.
