deadlifts when legs are slightly different lengths

Started doing deadlifts recently. Have a little more pain than I would expect in my right side afterwards, and none in my left. My right leg is a little longer than my left, maybe an inch, all below the knee from a damaged ankle when I was young. I think that's probably why.
Obvious thing to do seems to be to put a couple of insoles in my left shoe when I train. Does anyone else have any experience of this sort of thing?, or know what people usually do in that case?

deadlifts are best performed in either deadlift slippers or in ones bare feet. Very difficult to counteract this safely and properly. I would not advise putting anything under your foot to even the length.

Maybe a specialist in powerlifting or biomechanics can give you some advice.

"A good lifter in my gym (top 5 or so in his weight class in the UK) has two different length legs. He has a wedge in one shoe put in by a shoemaker. I don't think he would lift without it."

Not keen on getting professional advice, because I can't really afford it, and because I'd be suspicious of them exaggerating the extent of any problems so they could get me to spend more. I've had lots of bad experience with doctors and other healthcare professionals.

I'll try putting my shorter leg at a slightly raised height and see if the pain doesn't recur or at least become evenly spread over both sides.
