I asked Regi for the exact specs of the server and what its replacing. Heres what he said:

    HP DL380
    Dual 3.06 Xeon processors
2 GB PC2100 registered ECC DDR
    2 x 73 GB 10,000 RPM SCSI U320 disks
dual channel SCSI / RAID adaptor
    in RAID 1
    2 gig-e NICs
hot swappable drives, fans, PCI cards
    hot swapping PCI cards
    'Ultra2/3 HP-Backplane'
(the CPUs are 450 quid each)
these Xeons will appear as 4 CPUs to an OS
half a meg of cache on each one too

What we are currently running the webserver on:
    Dual P3 733, 1 GB PC133 ram, 3 x 36 GB disks
    Dell 2450

I think that calls for some fappage till we cant fappage no more.

If he is running raid 0 or raid 1 then why not consider 4 x 73Gb scsis and raid 0+1 if the form factor will take it .

The 2450 was a rather low profile laddie that could not take a tape drive, I see there has been little improvement since :)

Those that still have wood should click here. Warning! Contains isometric breakdowns of servers that may induce sexy feelings!

Computers are actually very stupid and have to be given explicit instructions on what to do by very smart people called admins.

    Ably advised by almost-as-smart-and-vastly-more-numerous mods.

Or is it hindered? I can never remember...

Perhaps someone was making a point that you are as, if not more sexeh than the server and deserved some fappage of your own.

I cannot take the slowness any longer, quick buy the new server get it installed now! If the google ads and subscription fees aren't enough, we'll donate (okay I'll donate some money)!! ;)

I'm fed up with boards running like an asthmatic pensioner, boards should be running like an american sprinter on steroids! :p

If it had the optional PCI-Express cage fitted and, say an Nvidia 6800 Ultra PCI-E card, it would.

Of course this is all susposing that it has a water tight case which it would need to keep out certain... fluids..........

Run Half Life 2? Jeez.... are you serious? We dont need *THAT* much power yet :)

Server arrived but there were issues and the new one arrives today/tomorrow. Regi reckons that the switch over will only take 30 mins as he's going to clone muppet.boards.ie over on to it.

Muck, they have half a meg of cache on each chip.

Well, as long as it has dry ice, blue lasers and an alien's head somewhere on the case it doesn't matter what the spec is!

What spec is the db server?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 10,501 Mod ✭✭✭✭ecksor

I don't know offhand, but the database server is never under much pressure apart from the odd diskspace issue.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 756 ✭✭✭Zaph0d

mysql must be very efficient then as oracle and sql server usually need to be on very beefy machines in this kind of arrangement. Did you consider buying a few cheap web servers without RAID rather than one large one to balance with your old server?

Maybe your rackspace costs were a factor?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 10,501 Mod ✭✭✭✭ecksor

mysql sacrifices actual database features in the name of speed. I wouldn't go recommending it for anything serious, and I'd really rather use something else as our backend because it can be a right pain in the tits for anyone who's used to a decent database platform. The database server isn't badly specced, I just don't know the specs offhand. We're not that massive a website in the grand scheme of things, the old webserver just croaks because the php scripts are CPU hungry things and we have far more users than ever before.
