Why do we nearly always get the same match on TV3/ITV1

On Tuesday night we once again have the same Champions League game on both ITV1 and TV3. Both these channels are available to at least 85% of the country.

Why do TV3 not take the opportunity of showing the Liverpool game which is only on ITV2 and not available to most people. Lets face it folks who's going to listen to Trevor Squelch instead of Clive "Manchester United have reached the Promised Land" Tyldsley on ITV. ? Man U and 'Pool both have large support here and TV3 viewing figures would be higher than the will be by showing the Man U game in competition to ITV.

    ????

It does my head in. Man Utd here, there and everywhere! TV3 rating for the game will be ****e as while Clive is terrible when its Utd he's better than Welch and Stapplegun any day of the week.

i'm going to go against the trend of this trend

tbf to TV3 they have shown a different match to ITV a lot of times but i disagree with this Man United on both channels because IMO Liverpool are playing the better football this season

Next Tuesday, TV3 is showing the same Champions League match live as ITV1, namely Sparta Prague VS Manu. For the second matchweek in a row the Liverpool tie will not be viewable in Ireland, as the only other channel with it is ITV2. Liverpool VS Depor

That's f***ing unbelievable. I emailed TV3 last week to rant about them doing it last week, and not surprisingly they didn't reply.

My hatred for TV3 grows by the day. I hope they are forced to fold....do us all a favour.

It's not TV3's fault. RTÉ would do the exact same thing.

The vast majority of football fans in Ireland support ManU. Therefore the vast majority of football fans who choose TV3 over ITV are ManU supporters and will therefore watch the half-time adverts on TV3 instead of ITV.
If Liverpool was being shown on TV3, ManU supporters would switch over to ITV and TV3 would lose out on ratings.

How can you get ITV 2 in Ireland - Can you get it with an UK based FTV card?

    None of that is true!

Also it makes much more sense to have 100% of Liverpool fans than say 60% of Man Utd fans.

    A few points here.
1:How many soccer supporters between 10 and 16 use the Boards.ie Soccer forum.
2:How many soccer supporters over the age of 40 use the Boards.ie Soccer forum.
Basically I would guess that a huge number of the Soccer forum users are male in the age range 20-35 which nicely coencides with football fans who can remember when Liverpool had their greatest successes in the 80's. And thats when support for Liverpool in Ireland was at its greatest. Hense the skewed result of the poll.

Of course it is their fault. I would be certain that they would get a bigger audience share if they showed a different game to UTV. If half the ManU fans in Ireland watched the game on UTV ( which is a pretty modest estimate ), then they would definitely have a bigger audience by showing Liverpool.

If Liverpool were on UTV, then I would expect ManU to be on TV3.

Most ManU fans I speak to [ in the Dublin area ] say they watch the games on UTV because TV3's coverage is amateurish.

I would too prefer to see the Liverpool match out of them two, TV3 have certainly made a bad choice this time.

TBH when there's two of the same matches on TV3 & ITV, I would too prefer to watch it on ITV, they have a more professional approach (Still not a patch on the BBC or even Sky) & they also have widescreen broadcasting.

At least next weeks Premiership live match on RTÉ won't be Man Utd for a 3rd time in a row, it's Arsenal vs Villa. \o/ :D

I sent off TV3 a couple of emails and to be fair to them they seem to have changed their mind and agreed to show the Liverpool game which is common sense ( see emails below)

    Hi again,

I notice you didnt repaly to my first mail, so I will try again.
On the next set of Champions League games I notice that you and ITV1 are
both showing Sparta Prague vs Man Utd while ITV2 is showing Liverpool v
Deportivo. Surely the Liverpool game is a bigger game and should be
shown especially as ITV are showing the Man Utd game?
    Please apply common sense.

    Regards

The vast majority of football fans in Ireland support ManU.

Another Dilussional Man U supporter. There's a vast difference between 'Supporting' a team, and saying 'I support Man U'. In my workplace the ratio would be about 3:1 in favour of Liverpool supporters and of the Man U supporters most of them couldn't even tell you what game they play next, or who managed them before Slur Alex etc etc. Most have never even been to Old Trafford. Man U may have more of a 'fan' base but that's only because of merchandising and Sunshine supporters who only want to support a successful team. In fact, I know of at least 2 Man United Supporters who have recently invested in Arsenal jerseys and are suddenly denying they ever supported Man U. Great loyalty! Anyway, totally off topic. I'm basically saying that the Vast majority of gootball fans in Ireland DO NOT support Man United and as such, TV3 are shooting themselves in the foot by following ITV1's lead and showing the United games at the same time. At least they've seen sense this time round!

Right, the reason why TV3 show same matches some times is not to do with most of ireland loving man utd, its not because they are the same as ITV and have to show them, its usually down to 2 things.

    1.
Each match is sponsored by an advertiser(Playstation and Ford, Playstation and Amstel, Amstel anmd Ford and so on.) They decide which match they are sponsoring on air that night and therefore that match is shown by default.

    2.
If there is more than one match on the rathings from previous games of all teams will be assesed. The teams with the highest average of viewers according to ratings will be shown

Thes are the reasons same matches are shown and nothing else. Fair enough if they showed the Liverpool game, but it wasnt because of emails or complaints but because the ratings on the previous matches were better.

hope that answers all questions about the matter

TV3 announced early last week that it was showing Sparta v Man Utd and changed its mind last Friday.

If you look at http://www.knplogic.co.uk/sport/ you will see that it is still listed as showing Sparta v Man U on TV3.

That is why I think complaining and sending emails does sometimes have a positive effect on decision making of the Tv companies.

I have been having a conversation with RTE about their biased Man U coverage, and here is as part of this, I have asked about the upcoming fixtures which they are planning on showing. Here is the list (and at least it is not all Man U)
(Call me a cynic, but I wonder how many United games they will have access to (those on a Saturday at 3pm))

Oct 16th Arsenal v Aston Villa
    Oct 30th Arsenal v Southampton
Nov 6th Chelsea v Everton or Liverpool v Birmingham
Nov 11th Chelsea v Bolton or Middlesboro v Liverpool
Nov 27th Charlton v Chelsea or West Brom v Man Utd.
Dec 18th Blackburn v Everton or Spurs v Southampton.

They've just done it again! Next Tuesday ITV1 and TV3 are both scheduled to show Manu's CL match live. Leaving the Monaco-Liverpool match only live on ITV2 (not viewable by most in Ireland). I hate this carry on.

so when RTE are showing a match it has to involve either Man Ure, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, that's stupid

Like it or not they are the most attractive fixtures and the ones likely to attract the biggest audience. The chances of RTE getting the rights to a meeting between any two of these four teams are pretty slim so you still get the chance to see some of the other premiership teams.

Theres no sign of Norwich being televised in the near future though kensutz. ;)

That doesnt surprise me, at least I rather be at the game than listen to the awful commentary on both RTE and TV3, include Setanta too. Next game Southampton at home then Brum away next week.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,697 ✭✭✭MaceFace

As a Liverpool fan, I completly agree with anyone who says that it is stupid to only show the big four!

In my correspondence with the guy in RTE, I never mentioned the fact that I am a Liverpool fan, because it is irrelevant.

It makes no difference what kind of viewing figures they get for the games - they are a public service broadcaster.
It is okay for TV3 to only show certain matches - they are in it for the advertising, but as a license payer, I would demand that they show matches outside the top 4. It is in their charter that they show programmes that appeal to all sections of society - not just SCUM fans.
If they can show Irish speaking programmes which only appeal to less than 1% of the viewers, surely they can show a Crystal Palace of Fulham game which I would imagine would appeal to a larger section of the public.
