Yeah, some emo's great but i think there's far too many US emo bands right now!

The best emo bands, in my opinion, are:

    - Jimmy Eat World (Amazing! 'Futures' is their best album yet!)
    - Saves The Day (a very under-rated band with some great albums, though their last album was pretty poor!)
    - Phantom Planet (amazing band that went downhill when their drummer Jason Schwartzman (Max Fischer in Rushmore etc.) became a movie star and left them. But 'The Guest' and 'Phantom Planet Is Missing' are both great albums!

PS - Don't know if i'd classify LostProphets as an emo band myself but everyone's definition of Emo is different!

I saw the lost prophets at Ozzfest, and Funeral for a friend at Iron Maiden. I didn't really like either of them. I haven't heard any of the other bands mentioned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

Yeah, I heard from alot of people that Funeral for a Friend sucked big time at Iron Maidon, it was a big mistake having them grace the stage together, but when they play on their own, they are amzing performers. Ive seen them 3 times and was always impressed. Would you really consider Saves the Day as EMO? I dont really know what genre they are because Ive only listened to the album twice, but if they are then thats cool. Lostprophets arent really under any genre to be honest, but I do like them, so I said screw it and just threw them onto the list. Who else are you into?

yeh jimmy eat world and saves the day rule.

but i don't like the review of jimmy's new single (pain) in "the ticket" in the irish times, called them lightweights

Hell yeah, my apologies for leaving out Jimmy Eat World, they are the definition of SAVAGE. Absolutly kick assssss!!! Never heard of Phantom Planet, unfortunatly!!!! Well you all should give Taking Back Sunday and Brand New a good auld listen to, they have an incredibly unique sound and are just fabulous!!!!They are both American, but not the usless American emo that is constantly being released. I agree with you, there are too many bands attempting to join the emo scene these days, just leave it to the professionals.

Can't stand emo, just personal opinion. To me, it's just a fad. As much as I hate to admit i was bitten by the nu-metal bug, I am proud that I have never taken to an emo song (apart from something from Five Pointe O but thats it!).

Saw FFAF and lostprophets, supporting maiden and metallica respectively, and couldn't wait for them to leave. But i didn't throw anything at them! Probably cos i was too far away and throw like a girl.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

Why do you think its a fad? Fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion, if you went onto a different site, you should see the fights and ructions caused by the different tastes in EMO and PUNK, luckily it aint here. I'm not sure who would be nu-metal, any famous names? Ah no, it would be impossible to try to change my mind on this genre, its all I listen to!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Getup Kids are pretty great. From above the bands I'd listen to are Thursday, Thrice and Finch. Finch were completely deadly in the music centre. Thrice were absolute SHÍTE :( Dunno what the story was but they were just really bad live.

Can't wait to see Thursday sometime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

Oh believe me, I think everyone wants to see them, but luckily I can say that I have seen them play live in Leeds this summer! Yeah baby and they were absolutly fantastic. They are taking a break though for a year or two, so you will have to wait a bit.Thrice played aswell but I missed Finch in temple bar.

million dead are amazing. i saw them supporting FFAF and they were brilliant, they hung around selling stuff outside after too.

i hate the patronising way people say that different music forms are fads, arrogant fools.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

Well... Brand New are amazingly good, but I wouldn't call them emo. Maybe they are, but I never saw them that way. Jimmy Eat World are just as good. I always thought of them as emo. Not really into any other emo bands. I've heard a few songs from a few bands, but never followed it up. Can't really see any of them beating Jimmy Eat World...

i dont theink JEW are emo, they're just not whiney enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

Oh I've had discussions with many of my peers who infact are in emo badns and we think that brand new and JEW are emo. but then again, thats just us and our emo-inspired opinions. has anyone ever seen JEW play live? God they were amazing, really got the crwod going at Witnness. Million Dead are a fantastic band, full of energy on stage at FF4F!! Emo doesnt always have to be whiney!!!!!Just have a bit of emotion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

You could say most bands have a bit of emotion really. I'd say the whiny thing is, for the most part, accurate.

I've seen Jimmy Eat World about 4 times. They are indeed very good. Though I didn't really like the Witnness gig. Just too big. TBMC was perfect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

Oh God, i'm so jealous, TBMC is the best place for gigs cos its small. Ah they were good at Witnness, but I saw them from afar though, that was the pity about it!! Yeah thats true, emo is whiney at times, but aren't most bands? They all seem to whinge about something or other.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

The Berkeley played with em in TBMC didnt they?Wasn't at all impressed with their Witnness performance :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

Who are The Berkely? Never ever heard of them before!! Well I do hope they play here again, cos they are a deadly band, to say the least!!

    oh berkeley are great!!

For the part I dislike emo. It's a style that is more than likely going to make me cringe than anything else.

Possibly the only band that I like that's remotely considered emo is Weezer. Stuff like Dashboard Confessional, The Get Up Kids and Saves the Day are real cringeworthy. Jimmy Eat World really aren't great at all.

And lostprophets are not emo, although they get tagged along with alot of emo-like bands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

forgot to mention weezer, the god fathers of emo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

What category would you put Lostprophets under then? To me they are general rock, but there are bits and pieces on the second album that is emo and the first album that is just plain weird. But I do like it. I'm not into Weezer, although they have a few good songs.

Thats what Ive asked, what genre are lostprophets? I like Antisocialisers taste in music, good work!!! Fair enough, there's a different taste in music, it happens!!

    What is emo?

would HIM count, starting to love that band

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

All that I can say, on my part anyway, is well done for admitting that. I say this because to me HIM are the suckiest band alive. I really can't stand them, God its frustrating just hearing their music!! No, fortunatly they wouldnt be emo. Emo is a genre of music that includes deadly guitar riffs, generally screaming....hence the other name"emo screamo!!"........The lyrics tend to be incredibly emotional, emo is a shortened version of emo/hardcore. Can anyone help me out here, its really hard to describe. Maybe my version of it is wrong, but thats hoow I would describe it anyway!!
Whats the deal are SUM 41 trying to go emo? Their new song is heavier than any of their older stuff!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

Antisocialiser......is it true that Brand New were supposed to support Finch when they came to Irlenad? Fair enough, I missed finch, but Brand New baby.......................why?Its okay, Ive seen Taking Back Sunday, even though they didn't come to Ireland!!!!!!!! And my God were they amazing!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

yes on a very basic level emo is emotional rock.

but it can be split into groups

screamo emo being one such group

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

Yeah, thats true, Funeral For a Friend would be considered screamo emo and Jimmy Eat World wouldn't. I kinda forgot about that part!!! Sometimes there can be too much screamo type rubbish. What is needed is good quality emo screamo!!!

firstly the fake sound of progress is not really their first cd i do believe they have at least one more on indepentdent release, but they would be at first nu-metal then they decided to break america probably because the record label wanted more money and lostprophets did too. anyway the new stuff is utter crap i couldnt care what genre they are now but they aint rock or emo and are no longer really nu-metally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 278 ✭✭Faddymackshyte

What, are you serious? Are you only basing your whole argument on their released material, or have you listen to both of the albums. You said that they aren't emo which indicated, to me, that you had another opinion of what genre they were. I'm not being bitchy or trying to sound like I know everything, but thats how it sounded. FSOP is very different to Start Something, and so is the material they release.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,750 ✭✭✭ghostchant

did anyone see million dead last year in the hub? they were amazing and yeah they were good supporting ffaf this year too.
so does anyone here like jetplane landing?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

haha, Berkeley were playin that night too!! :D Jetplance are okay from what I've heard. THeir touring guitarist Cahir Dogherty is in a band called Fighting with Wire from Derry. They're pretty good, played HWCH. Here's a few links for them:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/media/inside_r1/fww_francesfarmer.ram
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/realmedia/atl/tv/atltv_fww.ram

This page has a few tracks from sessions for BBC Northern Ireland by a load of bands including; element, jet plane landing, Clearshot(class!!!), Berkeley, and Los Cabras.....those are the bands I've heard and liked.
    Anyway, the link is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt/nireland/sessions.shtml

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,750 ✭✭✭ghostchant

yeah i saw them at HWCH. Cahir is a full time member of JPL is he not? He recorded on the last album. I never got the chance to hear clearshot live unfortunately though im told they supported at the drive-in once. JPL were amazing in the hub the last time they played over here too.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Is he? shoite, I'm not that well up on their goings on anymore. Yeah I was dyin to go to the ATD-I gig but noone from my area knew them to go up to Dublin with me :( Have their only release on vinyl and CD!!!There was a compilation of all their recorded work (Clearshot's) being put together but it hasnt been mentioned in a couple of years now :( Was pretty pissy when Marty, their bass player died. Used to mail him lookin for demos and stuff. Was a really nice guy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,750 ✭✭✭ghostchant

yeah i heard about that it was a real shame. Well fighting with wire were pretty good at HWCH anyway. As well as cahir, the drummer from clearshot is in fighting with wire too isn't he?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Yeah he is alright. I think they have an EP comin out pretty soon. Should be good. Apparently they thought the gig was completely chít. Petty they were on last and noone hung around after Bellend 1 :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,750 ✭✭✭ghostchant

yeah the place was pretty much empty but i figured everyone was there for bellX1 anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,770 ✭✭✭Bottle_of_Smoke

I say this because to me HIM are the suckiest band alive

    well....you're wrong

but you are entitiled to your opinion just don't use the word "suckiest" please
