I don't really have an all time favourite - I've more of a short list.
Leon is definitly up there, Matrix, Shawshank, Empire Strikes Back.

    Guys, El_presidente said pick ONE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,339 ✭✭✭✭LoLth

    nnnngggggg just one......

eeehhhhh, the Maltese Falcon. I think.

Matrix and all are visually stunning, but I still think the Maltese falcon is THE classic. (though Lawrence of Arabia, to the mountains of the Moon, Jungle Book, ****in' Bambi, etc would also be considered. Without putting a limit on the type of film - some sort of category system - it's just to difficult to tell).

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,053 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

Yeah ESB has been touted, wuite rightly, as the superior film but when discussing the greatest film one has ever seen I tend to go for the film that had the most impact on me.
A New Hope blew me away as a six year old in 1977 and started my dreaming. That's why I'm now a dosy ****er smile.gif

whatever about books I cant do this one. at the moment theres a special place in my heart for schindler's list. but i love spielberg, jp, et, private ryan.
i loved the thin red line, that was such an important film for me. (remeber the night we saw that andy?) go! was rocking. shawshank. maltese falcon has a vote to lolth. matrix, star wars, blade and heat.... i think not.
indy and the ark-hmmm. third one was my fav. 2001.
how i stopped worryin and learnt to love the bomb
    heavenly creatures
    something about mary
    python & the holy grail?

It is Schindler's List. I think the scene with the girl in the red coat seals it. I love that movie.

I would of said Shawshank Redemption.

But for movie I've watched the most times, that would have to be without a doubt "True Romance". Absolutly excellent film.

Only recent movie I've been able to watch over and over is "Something about Mary". Now if you will excuse me I have to go clean the pipes :q

    Dune.

(Despite only being 3 hours long)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,636 ✭✭✭Canaboid

    And Grease.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,518 ✭✭✭Hecate

    Dune(!!!!)

sorry I have to cut in there, Dune has got to be the most dire adaptation of a classic novel EVER made.

The main reason for this is its makers missed out on the chance to produce a brilliant film because of terrible editing and screenlay.

Start a new thread "Worst movies ever" smile.gif

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,414 ✭✭✭✭Trojan

    Yes, Dune.

Unfortunately 14 hour long films don't sell very well so they had to remove significant parts of the plot. They still managed to condense an absolute classic of a story into a great film with phenomenal effects when you consider what they had to work with.

Give it to me baby smile.gif

eh, Dead Santa, whilst there /is/ many a good film on your list, including Face/Off natch smile.gif, i feel the inclusion of Weekend at Bernie's and Forrest Gump must surely be an attempt at taking the ****.

WAB was just $hite, not much more to be said there, but Forest Gump!?!?!?! FOREST FU<KING GUMP?!?!?!?!?! i can honestly say that that is the most objectionable movie I have ever sat through in my life. Oh yeah the All-American hero who goes off to fight in the Vietnam War has a great life while the communist hippie scum who stays at home and protests against the war dies of AIDS. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, wholesome message.

A more offensive load of capitalist, Amerocentric b0llocks I will never see as long as I live (I hope).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,488 ✭✭✭SantaHoe

    ROFL! smile.gif
Can't please all of the people all of the time...
'Weekend at Bernies' is a film that a lot of people just don't "get".
As for Clueless, I think it a great film to watch if you think all Americans are dopey ********s. smile.gif

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,438 ✭✭✭TwoShedsJackson

I liked Clueless but it wouldnt exactly rate with the all-time greats. Classic line: 'if anything happens to her, I have a 45 and a shovel - you won't be missed' smile.gif

I didnt like Forest Gump btw smile.gif I just feel like smashing something whenever I'm reminded of the two hours of my life I wasted watching that tripe. Best Picture Oscar in the same year Pulp Fiction comes out?!?!? eh, right. The Americans wouldnt know a decent film from a hole in the ground.

Yeah!! Americans are just scum! God I hate Americans, don't gt me started on the dopey Americans. All 235 million of them- nothing but dopey liberal ass fascist homosexual commies! In fact the real problem with OUR GREAT country is that Americans constantly come in and steal our wives and our homes and our shoes. I for one have had enough.

    This is a tricky one...

The Life Of Brian has to be up there, simply because it's such a quotable film. Can I vote for all Monty Python movies at once please, given that they would have an aggregate budget of less than your average Spielberg?

Being an anime-head, I have to throw Perfect Blue (if you see this, whether you like anime or not, pick up a copy - the weirdest and best psycho-thriller of all time) and Princess Mononoke in there.

The Matrix has to be right up there as the epitome of cool.

But if I had to pick the best - very best - movie I've ever seen, I'd pitch for the Basketball Diaries, purely for the blood-runs-cold factor...
