Freshers: A Guide To Freshers Week

    Hello Freshers,

after the differences between my first and second year freshers week, i thought i should let you in on a few tips for freshers week. most involve alcohol so if u dont drink *yet* you mighnt be interested. so here we go:

Very Important bring money, each socitey costs about €2/3 to join, but u can avoid paying sometimes if u annoy them enuf. do join a few good societies (Sci Fi soc, phil, netsoc, karting, rifle club!?!) great way to meet people and have a laugh!

also never think that looks like a crap society or its full of idiots, e.g. DUBES, probably one of the most annoying societies in college but last year for a €2 membership i snagged 10 bavarias, many cocktail sausages and popcorn in freshers week, best €2 ever spent.

always ask about what they are giving free, and especially about receptions that are going on, there is at least one a day be it free drink or wine(its all good)

if u dont know "free refreshments" mean alcohol.

most of the tours and faculty meeting are boring and not worth going to, the library tour warns you that if u dont go u will get restricted use or some crap, TOTAL LIE. also i would recommend going to one of those meet your class mates and convince them all to go to one of the nights out(great way to get to know them)

the nights out are great fun, i recommend club philth(the philosophical soc). the phil is also a good society to join, according to the website and the secretary they have many kegs and plentiful supplies of alcohol to get them through the week, and with a visit from Ron Jeremy on freshers week and Justin Timberlake among others throughout the year its worth the couple of euro(or 5 for a life membership!) oh yeah, rumour has it they debate to. . .

if u dont like bavaria get to like it.

do buy tickets for each event before the day in question they tend to sell out, and i have been offered €20 for a €5 ticket outside fireworks on an occasion.

get to know the pav and the buttery, you WILL make use of them during the year, especially pav fridays( and drowning those exam sorrows!!)

and finally Come in everyday, you'll regret it if you dont.

oh yeah, one more thing ENJOY IT, its the greatest place ever(for an educational institute of course!) :D

    Ross(JS)

If you want to avoid paying money to get into the Phil and the Hist for the free drinks, go up to the person at the door and tell them that you paid earlier but there were no tickets left at the stand, and that Paddy/Anne said it'd be okay if you went over without one for the moment.

However, if you get busted doing this, do not under ANY circumstances tell them where you got the idea, because then I'll have Paddy/Anne griping at me about how I'm giving him problems.

Clarification on the Phil Hist thingy...go over to whichever stand, talk to them, get the name of one of the people at it, then go over and say they said it'd be okay...there'll be no quick way of checking.

While you're drinking your merry socks off, remember a few things.

If you start drinking with societies early, move onto bottles when you hit the bar. It'll mean you stand a better chance of being able to walk at the end of the night.

Make sure one of the people you're with for the evening is fairly sober - they'll be able to make sure you get in a taxi and get home safe. And thy'll stop you from scoring someone you really shouldn't - or at least they'll remember it enough to slag you about it the next day...

Drink a pint of water every now and again. It does wonders for your body the next morning. Nothing like a pint of water at the end of the night to banish hangovers...

EAT. There's loads of places to eat food - use them. You'll manage better on a full stomach, and you won't have to eat vile kebabs from Iskanders or garlic fries from Rick's to fill up later.

Iskanders is magnificent best drunken food ever.
Now head my advice taking into consideration i am in no way shape or form a responsible person ,but do not i repeat do not on your first night out with you new mater socre a mess of a thing on no grounds not even for a bet or drunken stupidity NO,you will never live it down ever, ugh she was nightmareish,
Now to the ays of getting drunk
Lesson 1: dunnes cans 89c a can nugh said
Lesson 2: go out on every night out and get pissed and if underage get a fake id NOW a drivers licence they do't ask generally on freshers night but that would wreck the buzz entirely
Lesson 3:THE PAV find it love it get drunk in it as much as you can ignore the buttery the barmen are tossers
Lesson 4:I will get in trouble for this but what the hell first day go and watch the spectale of the gamers society playing with swords of the plastic kind its quite amazing really
Lesson 5:yet again the pav and dunnes cans where possible
Best of luck see you maybe i maybe quite drunk that week if the past is anything to go by

Is there a reason for going to your tutor in the first week or is it just for the sake of it? Has anyone had Dr Graham and know what he is like?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 761 ✭✭✭PrecariousNuts

I think its just to introduce yourself, I've got Dr Stefan Hutzler

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,228 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

i went to see my tutor and basically he said i dont want to see you during your stay in college coz if i do it will mean something is wrong. which is true!!

as i said before there are some very good socities in college to cater for most needs and everyone should really join something even if just for the social scene, and every society is open to everyone. also any football player looking to play during your time in trinity, if u dont try out for the freshers team, good luck seeing any football during your time here, i got royally screwed on that!!!

and when it comes to drinking(again!) if u buy can which can be purchased in the pav (bavaria etc) as long as they dont see u whip them out of a centra bag or something they cant throw you out as they cant prove you didnt buy them there!!! same thing for buttery if they decide to sell bav again next year.

if ur too drunk they wont let u into the clubs on the freshers nights out, they wont go easy on you!!

Oh you lucky bastard... You've got bubbles!
    Ohhoh he's a character..
He's looking a little more normal since he cut his hair but my first impression of him was his introduction to physics lecture he gave in the first week of term.
In walks this chap with long wavy gray hair, thick rimmed glasses (and when I say thick I mean they had GIRTH!) and an ear-ring. "What the..." is all I could think. It all made sense though when he introduced himself and I heard the dutch accent. You come to expect this kind of thing from the dutch.. ;)

The lecture he gave was on bubbles... apparently he's like one of the worlds foremost authorities on them. I was so bored I wanted to cry!

He's a nice guy tho, better than my tutor (some geography fella). Also he's plays lead electric mandolin or something in a band that aren't half bad..

lol hrm bubbles, the bubbles were great, for those first few minutes when i thought he was taking the piss about researching them lol ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

he isn't the guy who entered the Battle of the Bands for the Trinity Ball this year is he?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

    He is indeed..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,666 ✭✭✭Imposter

I'd advise you to go see your tutor. You never know what will happen and you may need them. Having met them before will give the tutor a slightly better impression of you than if you just show up when you've a problem.

I have Ivana Bacik and I am a little scared of her from her posters.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

i have a ms.honor nicholl, any word on her?

oh and where are most of the frshers nights out on, are they all around town?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 38 atlas

My tutor was a star - Dr Myra O'Regan in Stats. She helped me get my results in first year so I could decide whether or not to do schol. Best to meet them just so they see your face and if/when you have problems they think you're dedicated/good student/etc. Can't hurt.

Quite a lot. I think my tutor had upwards of 100 students.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

100?! ok so its not that personal then im thinkin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

No, they're not tutors in the sense of tutoring you. If/when you get in trouble with the junior dean they'll fight your case and they'll make excuses for you when you're out sick. Well not so much make excuses but if you've been really sick and missed a few labs/assignments they'll contact the relevant people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

Well you only ever really go to them if you have a problem.. They either deal with it or refer you..

If you're bold you get reported to the Junior Dean for punishment (ranging from slap on the wrist [metaphorical] to a fine to getting your evil self cast from the good ship TCD). I had hopes of the junior dean being like the dean in the Simpsons but when we asked him to jam with us we got told no and to keep it down. Well the asking to jam bit was a lie but we mistakenly had a jam session in House 6 and security came up to shut us down because we were disturbing schols exams in the exam hall. Damn the man!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

aw so no jamming...ok ill keep that in mind!

but jam on toast is ok, just to clarify :D

i woint be 18 till mid october,
im gonna miss out on all these things in fresher week,
Do bouncers leave you in to a club if your like 2 weeks away from being 18?
I use a fake id,but it doesnt work in nightclubs just pubs, wher its dark

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

you can try and just walk in, I don't remember being carded during any freshers' week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,228 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

you'll have no problem getting drink and all from societies as they dont care but it is touch and go on the clubs. you mightnt have a problem if ur bday is in october as most of the time they only check the year and month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

Something I definitely don't recommend is to make a better fake ID. It's disgraceful how people can just temporarily borrow their mate's driving license, get a passport photo of themselves, buy that non-permanent clear sticky book cover from any stationary shop, put their photo over their mates, cover the front of the license with said clear sticky book cover and then trim to the edges to the license with a scissors. Absolutely disgraceful...

It's a real pity also that bouncers haven't copped onto this. Why anywhere where they accept driving licenses this seems to fool them. Something should be done...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

    Goe passport.

/me fluffles the picture that actually looks like me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

does ur trinity id count as id for clubs, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,228 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

no coz there is no dob on it, just a yellow line going across it if u are under 18, so the pav and buttery know not to serve you, when you turn 18 u need a new card.

Aye but another disgraceful thing that can be done.. With the ink side of a two end rubber, you can rub out that yellow strip, it takes a bit of effort though. It doesn't rub out the colour behind it so it's seemless. Just be careful cos it will rub out any text/photo nearby if you stray at all..

I *ahem* "knew someone" who did it for beers during my freshers week. ;)

yeah i know someone who tried nail varnish remover...hrmmm lets just say it didn't work out too well...
