A fair few of the extensions are still not updated...I guess I'll have to use my mouse! Bah.

Just got it and despite my joy at seeing Auto-detect connection settings...it can't pick up my wifi network connection and I don't have any manual settings. Pity cos I'm stuck with IE6 which can pick up the settings itself.

    Boo Hiss.
How about the proxy switcher extension
Tip don't install the extensions, save them to a folder and associate .xpi with firefox and then you can double click then when you move to a new pc / reinstall etc , no more seaching

On a side note: Am I missing something here? I thought you could get firefox to keep an eye on bookmarks to see if they were updated back in the 0.9 series. I can't find it in the new release but I don't remember if it existed or I'm just dreaming?
RSS? You can do it with certain sites, for example, www.steampowered.com

Thanks for that - actually just got it working with a auto-config URL.

Robert - I don't follow how you do that on the Steam website?

Ah! I still thought there was something in the bookmarks you could do to tell it how often to check and how to notify. Maybe it was an extension but I didn't think so.

Just unzip the files in the zip to

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins

    After that restart Firefox.

The google search area on Firefox, you can add more engines to it.

So I made one that allows you to search boards.ie from within Firefox (dont need to be on the site).

You've got to change a setting in about:config....I cant remember offhand...just search the support forums.

I don't get the fascination with FF....its a memory hog, takes up loads of disk space, you have to go off finding and downloading loads of extensions to make it worth using and worst of all it doesnt have a decent note taking extension like the note feature in Opera...

Someone please tell me why is it sooo good?

I don't get the fascination with FF....its a memory hog,

38,000K with 6 pages open in tabs. Compare that to IE of 50,000K with 4 windows open.
takes up loads of disk space,

15MB on disk. How much disk space do you have?
you have to go off finding and downloading loads of extensions

Select Extensions from the tools, click get more extensions. It is worth using without the extensions.
doesnt have a decent note taking extension like the note feature in Opera...

It has two but they are in the process of being updated. Quicknote I know offhand, there is another that attaches post it notes to websites.
Someone please tell me why is it sooo good?

Faster, safer then IE. Some of the extensions are really nice. Browsing has never been so painless.

I also surfed to a dodgy site that attempted to do pop-ups and install software on my machine. FF stopped it in its tracks. The site also had the scrollbar exploit which was plainly obvious.

  • Posts: 8,317 ✭✭✭ Michael Tinkling Tycoon

    hmmm

I've used the quicknote extension and I think most people would agree that its a little clunky...

Can you suggest some good extensions? Besides the really obvious ones such as allinonegestures, single window etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,264 ✭✭✭✭Hobbes

    bugmenot
    adblock
    single window
    weatherfox
    ieview
    diggler
    googlepreview
    context highlighter

There is also one I found before (but lost) that puts icons beside links to tell you if they are popup/pdf/jpeg/mailto links.

Also Stumbleapon is supposed to be good but I have never used it.

i heard that firefox 1.0 has live bookmarks. Can someone tell me how that actually works?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭Bri

I see there's a gmail notifier or two out there too - can't seem to find an updated version though. Never heard of this till now although I have the mailto extension which lets you mail from gmail etc straight off the webpage your browsing.

Google have a notifier too but I'd rather get a firefox extension than clutter up my system tray. http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/ <--- the URL puts me off!
    Anyone got either?

Its the signed.applets.codebase_principal_support string. Set it to true. However, this gives websites read/write access to your clipboard as long as its open and Firefox 1.0 pr allows this opening feature anyways. Now I offically have no reason to use IE at all.

The linux installer is totally counter-intuitive. First, there's no documentation supplied with (and not much useful on the site). Second, it doesn't check (or ask) for a previous installation. Thirdly, when you unpack the tarball, then run ./firefox-installer its default installation path is where you run it from, eg:
~/tmp/firefox-installer/. If you accept this (and I imagine a foo number of users would), it dumps all the files into the temporary directory, and doesn't add the binary to your path.

It used to be you just unpacked the files, then moved them in one go to /usr/share/firefox for example, but this method makes no sense whatsoever.

And none of the extensions work or update automatically, you have to go download them all again. I know it's not a final release, but it seems to be a step backwards in many ways. (I know there's a button for it, but when I click on Update, it downloads an extension, tries to install it and then tells me it's not compatible with version 1.0)

Ack, I started ranting, so I might as well finish - what's with the new google toolbar - it's mental! First few random searches just displayed the index page of the first result, i.e. a search for "time" opens up www.time.com instead of a list of search results. The next search brought up a list of links entirely in Chinese (the page itself was partly in chinese).

Yeah, the Linux installer is piss-poor. I found it doesn't even install correctly on Suse, when I tried it there. For myself, I just unpacked to an obscure folder and put a link on my taskbar.

    No, C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\RANDOM.default
has a file called bookmarks.bak which you can use to recover your bookmarks if you ever lose them. Keep your own seperate backup just in case,

That's what I do aswell, unpack it to the home directory and make a link. Installers in Linux are not really fantastic because Linux ppl tend to be able to think for themselves more then the average Windows user.

Eh I had this problem and so did someone else (posted a day or too ago - firefox has issues - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=188120).

OfflerCrocGod: Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but that file was no help to me last time I checked, because firefox rewrote the file with the empty bookmarks. Unless you've backed it up (or you could just export them and keep it as an easy .html file) I'm not sure it's any good.

It does - when it shuts down. So don't shut it down before you grab the backup file. Sorry I should have mentioned that originally.

Figured it out....if I set the profile folder location to anything other than the default (Application Data) the bookmarks that come with FF don't appear and bookmarks that you create aren't retained.
