Hey i am trying to get in contact with people interested in joining a North-West LUG. I have contacted several people already and hope this might attract more.

Basically we hope to deal with the North-West meaning mainly Sligo, Mayo, Roscommon, Leitrim and anyone close who wants to join. Its all in the prelimery stages yet but we hope to have a website soon. Anyone interested please contact me at mcclane @ eircom.net

    Thanks.

Heh, there really isn't much of a north-west 'scene' on these boards, is there?

From Donegal myself and I'd be intereseted in this only I'm off to Prague on Monday for a good half a year, so there's not much point.

That said, if you need hosting space I might be able to help out. You making much headway?

Sounds good. I haven't tampered with Linux in over two years but I've been waiting for an excuse to get back into the swing of it. Let me know how the plans go.

I'm actually in Dublin for the next few months, but I'm from Mayo, so I'd be interested, in partaking upon my return. At the very least I'd like to keep tabs on how you're getting on.

This raises the question: are there almost as many Mayo- as Sligo-based people involved in this (in the loose sense that anyone is "involved" in it)? If so, should we look at dividing meetings up between Mayo and Sligo? I know I've only been to one, and a combination of short notice and the fact of having to travel goes a long way to explaining this.

I'm not sure such a 'formal' split would be such a good idea. I reckon it would be a better idea t o have a NWLUG, that just happened to have meetings in different places. Maybe have pubmeets in Sligo, Castlebar(or Ballina), and Letterkenny on different weeks/days/months/whatever.

I think any central organisation should take place in Sligo however, since it's probably the most central point. It takes about two hours to get from Ballinrobe(South Mayo), or Letterkenny(mid-Donegal), to Sligo, so you could only really expect people to 'go-central', maybe once or twice a year.

    Sorry, I wasn't clear: that's what I meant. s/dividing/alternating, if you will.

    Ballina works for me. ;)

So has this happened, or is this going to happen?

Wow, this is old. I went to a couple of meetings nearly two years ago now, nothing really became of them, though there were a few interested heads. McClane is out foreign for the forseeable future so I don't think he'll be resurrecting it.

I'm from Mayo and I'm interested but is anyone else still interested in setting up a North-West Linux user group?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27 jer1ch0

Jeez, this thread dates from 2004.
At the very least we should agree to start up an online LUG with maybe a Google group or site.

    Lost cause, I guess.

The place to start may be at Linux.ie:
    http://www.linux.ie/community/

They host sites for the Dublin, Cork, & Midlands LUG's.

There's also LUG's in Belfast & Derry. For Donegal people it might make sense to join forces with the Derry LUG, and also try and get NW LUG going (and maybe join forces or work with the Midlands LUG).

If people are interested in creating a Google group that's easy enough to do, but ye all need to decide what to use it for?

Is the (London)Derry* LUG still active? I may be in the neighbourhood late February and would love to drop by a meeting.

*Being American I want to be as neutral as I can be** as far as the city's name goes.
**I'm admittedly a good bit nationalist leaning.
