    thanks again.
Saw a thing on TCD bout a preliminary course in Chemistry for weaker students who did Ordinary level LC or got less than a C in higher level. It says its open to everyone doing a science or health course and you should make a serious effort to attend. I was thinking about doing it, it starts 27th sept, has anyone done it or know anything about it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Apparently it's good but quite intensive. I'd recommend it because the lectures do move a bit quickly so if you get stuck behind at all it's a lot of effort to catch up. I'm not sure how much chemistry you'll have to do for nursing though

    Almost completely useless. Seriously.

Yeah i'm not sure exactly how much chemistry nurses have to do either, but i just thought cos i was so crap at it in school that id need it. I got a B2 in O-level LC, think thatd be ok?

Have you done it already Boston, or just heard it was completely useless?
I wasnt too keen on having to go in on my own anyway before freshers week even started. When does that start BTW?

Thanks 4 all ur advice, ur all so nice! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

I did it last year. But i'd never done chemistry before so I found it complete;y useless. It should be called a refresher course. And if goes on during freshers week. I'd find it odd that nurses would do it. It's usually engineers and science types. As for when freshers week starts. I'd imagine sometime around october 2nd.

Oh ok well if i dont need to do thats such a relief. Someone told me i should do it and i foolishly believed them, typical me lol. I should stop trusting everyone shouldnt i!

If its on during freshers week, forget it! Nah think ill leave it anyway, couldnt be arsed unless i really had to do it.

Fresher's week starts October 4th. Lectures begin the 11th.

Still the same ole pav :) , nothing really changes there, except with the smoking ban u can see the far side ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 guwh

The Pav is a little emptier inside now because of the smoking ban, making it marginally easier to approach the bar.

    Tips for Freshers:

1 Make sure you go to Freshers week
2 Go to the library intro, you'll regret it near exam time if you have to discover how it's laid out in a hurry.
3 The ISS intro is useful too, but you can easily catch up on what you missed later, if you really have to miss it.
4 Most important point of all: REGISTER!! (You get your free fees processed, get your name on the college books for the year, and get your college username, ISS password and library password.

    A useful link: http://www.tcd.ie/Maps

I got lost a lot during my first few weeks. This is very useful for discovering where obscure theatres are hidden.

Oh, and if you want a locker, you better come in really early on the first day of term (first week of lectures), i.e. around 6AM and queue in the Arts Building (Nassau St.).

    Best of luck...

thanks for the tips lol, how necessary is it to get a locker and would most people need one?

oh and obvious question i know sorry, but do we get student cards at the start of term or do u have to like apply or what? god i must sound like such an idiot but i really have no clue!

Lockers are available, but highly limited. Some courses have dedicated lockers, like the engineers, but I never used the one I had in first year. If you need to stow away sports gear, your best bet is to put them into one of the two cloakrooms. They're free unless you leave stuff overnight. There's one in the Arts Block and one in the Hamilton.

Next student cards; you'll be notified about when to go and register - this is when you'll get your Trinity student ID. You can use that to go to the SU and get your CIE student travel card. In fact the SU can now print up the cards there and then with a digital photo rather than having to get passport photos and then sending them off to the card company.

Ok thanks, looking forward to reg :D
So if they take the pics with a digital camera does that mean they'll take it again if i blink or would they just tell me to get lost lol, knowing me ill feck up the photo and be left with a horrible pic for four years! ;)

The Graduate Students' Union (GSU) is at
    http://www.gsu.tcd.ie

Lockers are available for postgrads in the GSU Common Room in House 7 and the 1937 Postgraduate reading room. They can be rented for a year from the GSU at the start of term.

Actually Trinity have a special filter installed on all camera lenses that means that no matter what, you'll look like a corpse in all your photos. For four years.

there are several computer rooms around the college which you should get to know especially the quiter ones as around exam times the more popular ones are jammed

theres one in the arts block on the 4th floor room 4066, this is a quiet one
theres 1 pc and 1 mac room on the lower floor in the arts block (very busy)
theres 3 pc and 1 mac rooms in the East End
theres 2 pc and 1 mac rooms in the Hamilton and is generally quiet and also 24 hours with swipe access
theres a new one opening in the GMB on the top floor so i expect this will be uber quiet
theres a new one in the Ussher library, its not open just yet but should be for term so may be quiet to start
theres 2 pc rooms in Aras An Phiarsaigh or AAP as its called (busy)
theres 2 pc rooms in the Huts which is beside the rugby field and is 24 hour(busy)

Some departments provide their own computer rooms exclusively for their students. Computer Science, Statistics, MEE etc. You can nearly always find a free machine in one of these rooms, but you can't use them unless you are in the relevant department. For the lucky few, it's great!

Actually these are some of the only departments that provide computer rooms for their Undergrads

Geography, Maths do too. That's all that I can think of off the top of my head. But once you are taking a course of some sort in a department, you can often get a username in their domain. For instance, all second year engineers can use Computer Science labs.

For any problems that you need advice on, email the delightful Luke Ryder, welfare officer to the stars. Well, students at least.

And without sounding like a total nerd, check out your course's exam papers early on and see what to expect in the summer. The more exam papers you do during the year, the better you'll do in the summer exams.
