    Hey all,
I wonder if anyone can help me here.

Quite often, when I start running on the threadmill, I get a sharp muscular pain just above my left hip that is driving me f*ckin crazy!! Most of the time I can rub the muscle and it calms down but sometimes (like today) i just can't run with it and I have to stop (I never have this problem with the bike but I much much prefer the threadmill).

I look stupid running along with my hand on my hip rubbing the muscle.its also incredibly irritating and embarassing to wait 20 minutes for a threadmill and then have to come off it after 6 minutes.

What the **** is going on? i always include a couple of torso stretches and definitely never overdo the crunches.

    paul

I have a pain on both knees, hips and above like you.
Tell be buddy are you fat? If yes your running technique is right. If not, i mean medium fat then running may be wrong. Dont jump too much while running. Keep low.

I get the above mentioned pains only while running on a thread mill. My gym is one of the best in the city and the gym folks were nice enought to have the treadmills check only for me out of more than 1000 members we have.

Treadmills have hard surface so all the shock has to be legitimately be absorbed by the body. Shoes act as cusioning, but too much cusioning causes balancing problem. ANY SHOE IS GOOD. Infact studies support this,

More over there is one due i know who runs barefoot. He has no injuries. http://www.barefootrunner.com

ANd I have been running with those 200$ sports shoes and paid the doctors more than that to get my injuries recovery.

So try NOT JUMPING while running.
Try running on grass or on surfaces open ground. This would even provide you with more natural air/more oxygen.

If purely looking for weight loss, walking helps too. Really. Take a bise and ride it for sometime other than you time at gym.

The pain over your hip sounds like a muscle train - try swimming for a few weeks instead to take the strain off your hip. Doubt its from impact as that would more than likely show up in your shins and knees but I would still try getting a good shoe.

Although its a long time since I used to run alot I would have a look at a pair of asics (asics 123's were the best I ever had). Get light shoes without that gel - I was told it settles after a while and can affect your balance.

TBH though go see a physio if you have any concerns - he'll be able to check your posture and repair any damaged muscles. G'Luck!

    boggle.

Mmmm. the ol runners are getting a bit worse for wear at least (like you i swear by asics - fantastic shoes).

Don't have access to a pool unfortunately. (there is one in DCU - brand new. but they messed up the budget and so don't have enough money to open it  )

It is all in the shoe is my advice. I had shin pains and hip pains and all kinds of stuff, changed shoes and was mazed at the difference. I seriously never realised how much your shoes impact your running...

    Buy new shoes!
