Bra straps in public

Maybe it's me and my heights of unfashionableness, but are women that show of their bra straps in public (a) not very well clued in (b) attention seekers (ooh, look I'm fixing my bra strap again). OK, if its a black top with staps, you might get away with a black bra, but otherwise its uggghhh.

I saw a couple of [strike]girls[/strike] women with halter tops during the week, and while I imagine not everyone can wear one, strapless bras appear much better, although problematic if cleavage is involved.

Victor did you do that graphic yourself? Bra strapes which are not the same colour vis-a-vis the top worn are wrong, just plain wrong. Whats problematic about cleavage pray-tell?

Yes it is you and your "unfasionableness".
You look like your mother still buys your jumpers for you so I don't really think you're in a position to comment on other people's attire.

Funny this topic just came up today coz i my sis wore her bra straps showing going out on friday night! Personally, i wouldnt do it.. but i think they can be worn in a fashionable way.. Here's what she wore going out on friday night..

Black off the shoulder top with cerise pink bra straps showing with a cerise pink mini skirt..

She tried on a strapless bra with the outfit too, but the bra was an exact match of the skirt, she just had to wear it! I really liked it..

I have done it in the past and will do it in the future....
I am clued in as well as I wish and am not seeking attention*

*unless it is of the karma whoring kind that is!

Why not use a bra with "see through" bra straps. The cups are normal material but the straps are plastic and see through so you can wear them with any colour.

I thin a lot of the time it depends on the type of top you're wearing. I'd never wear bra straps with an off the shoulder top, because it changes the shape sort of. Whats the point of wearing a strapless top, if you're then going to wear straps? I don't really mind people wearing them with string tops though, although the colour has to match up or it ends up looking kinda funny!

I have no probelms what-so-ever with the ould bra strap poking out, BUT....
    There is two unacceptable circumstances:

    1) A halterneck top (with low slung back) with a normal bra. [a]
    2) The blantant sholder strap off, coupled with the sholder strap of the top off also.

[a]: I've seen this reciently and genuinly felt angry. I guess it was the fact that I could see the back strap of the bra that really bothered me - but, by christ she looked stupid. Please girls - don't. Low slung/backless tops don't go with bras. No excuse.
: The "I'm a grunge chick" or "too cool for school" look.

Otherwise I really don't care. I don't expect women to constently be checking their straps in case they're sticking out.

..and, yes, seeing a peak of underwear is kinda sexy. ;) - so long as its a little peak.

It's very hard to find a decent strapless bra. I hate wearing bras with any sort of padding and I've yet to find a strapless non-padded bra. (Any ideas? :)).
So therefore, if I wear a black vest-top, I wear a black bra underneath it. And the straps show. But I don't honestly see the problem with it. I wouldn't wear a bra with a halterneck top but apart from that, well, most of us have to wear bras, there's not really much we can do about them.

I wouldn't really care all that much either (and its not really my place to care about such things either) - but I saw 1) a few weeks ago (attachment based on Victors pic) and it was pretty horrible.

Try the multiway or backless bra - it is underwire but it does work and it does not have any padding. I have to push my halterneck bra down as low as possible and hope that it does not show when I wear halternecks (I sometimes pin my bra to my clothes).

As an aside - why do they still do padded bras for the larger sizes?

Hmm cool, thanks, I'll have a look out for it when back in Ireland. In Germany they only sell padded bras, at least in Ireland you can find some normal yokes.. not a chance here. I have no idea why. As for padded bras for larger sizes.. it genuinely baffles me. Some of the bigger bras out there are like some sort of rocket launchers!! Maybe they'll cop on some day.. ;)

Yes :p Got strange looks at work. :)

Pretty much. Either bra or top would need to be outrageous to get away with it.
    Whats problematic about cleavage pray-tell?
When it's showing off a faded white Dunnes Stores bra*? It comes down to the difference between fashion and style. Some people have it, some don't.
So she has spent X thousand dollars on a dress and she can't get matching underwear? It's like plastering a wall and leaving half the supporting blockwork showing (the bra that is, not JLH).

    * Marginally, and only marginally, better than faded Dunnes Stores boxers showing over the top of jeans.

Next topic of conversation, the little pink bows on Amz's knickers....

The solution is simple, ban clothes

Depends on who's wearing them. I've worn them plenty of times with spagetti strap tops and people (including male and female) always compliment me on how well it looks instead of the usual white strap.

Isolde - I hear you on the padded bras - if your boobs are any way big at all your clevage is like two bloody mountains! But I've discovered a lot of the padded bras have the option of removing the padding which is much better. Also the next time you're in Ireland check out Roches for the new strapless, backless bra! Sorry can't remember the name of these but they are def available in roches. I've seen them advertised and they seem great. My mate used one for her bridesmaid dress and found it great. I will check with her and get back to you.

There are a lot of bras out there with straps and designs that beg to be shown off. I would have no problem with straps showing as long as it actually adds to the outfit.

But please, put that grey bra strap away

Bra straps should never be seen in this day and age. With so many different types of bra available there really is no excuse. There are so namy designs and removable straps that are interchangable, we are long past the days of boulder holders like our grandmothers.
On the large boob/padded bra issue I completely get you! M&S is great though for getting a decent strapless that sits nicely.
The only exception is when wearing a string top and they are the exact match and are not noticeable from a mile away.
Showing off your underwear in public is NOT sexy. Most guys would probably agree that leaving something to the imagination is much sexier.
    Am I right boys??

No no no no NO!! OMG, i think they are MUCH worse than a bra strap showing. My friend wore one last year going to a dinner dance. Her dress had a strap on one side but not on the other. She easily could have went strapless but she didnt want to be pulling it up all night..

Anyway to make a long story short. It looked OK on the night but you could see the clear strap.. Then when the local paper printed photo's the following week, she nearly collapsed with embarassment. It was SO noticable in the pics & she was mortified. I'd prefer to have a bra strap showing than how those pics turned out any day!

Danni - I agree I wouldn't wear the see through strap bras with a strapless/one strap dress either but they are fine with spagetti vest tops or the tops that curve in at the back. Guess its a personal choice. I'm lucky to be able to get away with not wearing a bra for those type of dresses so its not a problem for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

The M&S strapless bra is truly excellent. I'm fairly large-breasted and have never had any problems with it.

I would have to agree and say that those plastic-strapped bras actually can look worse.

Ya, i agree with you too that they are fine with spagetti vest tops.. But god i wouldn't dare wear one with a dressy top after seeing my friends pics!

I'd usually wear a strapless bra with a strapless top, but there annoying because you have to keep pulling it up on you..
But its better then having straps showing looks terrible..

Those clear straps are the worst. they look so ugly and common looking. Whenever i see clear bra straps, the person wearing them usually have no boobs and are trying to enhance what little they have with a padded plastic strap bra. Normal colour bra straps are fine and so are strapless, and even going without a bra is fine if you are wearing a top that supports you enough that you are not bobbing around.

This works well, except for the bra being light coloured under a dark top http://www.techtalkireland.com/photo/IMG_57.JPG

Showing off sexy underwear is sexy. And I'm not talking about that stupid lacy stuff. Plain colour seamless cotton / cotton lycra, high-leg if you can get waay with it, with elastic in the right places can work wonders. Sloogi is good:

interesting that a guy should bring this up.. :)

what's the difference in bra straps you can see vs. thongs peeking out in wonder..

for that matter personally i would say it's a turn-off to see a man's underwear showing when wearing those extremely low-rise hip-hop baggy jeans..

maybe underwear no matter the sex is off-putting, although i'm sure some people feel excited by the fact they're seeing something they're not really meant to see..

    Thongs / underwear very uncool.
