dc++ bittorrent or the old faithful irc

Another vote for Bittorrent get bittornado as a client - the default one is not really that good:dunno: - BT is recommended if you have broadband by the way not otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

BT is crap. There just isn't enough seeds for what you want most of the time.

Half the time your upload speed is faster than your download speed.

I've looked around on DC++ a bit but haven't been able to connect to anybody elses file list. I can connect to hubs because I have enough GB's shared but can someone give a few pointers on how to actually download anything. :/ I'm slow sometimes.

Emule - for having the biggest selection of stuff ever - if you can't get it on Emule you can't get it.
Bittorrent / IRC - for a quick (usually) way to get the newest stuff - and various bits and pieces on bittorrent.
Newsgroups - for those you have a T1 connection and want to max it out downloading a 1 GB file in a couple of mins.
Kazaa - for newbies who don't mind getting fake files.

You must be behind a firewall or a using a router!

you have to config your router to route certain ports that DC++ uses to your computers ip

I can get films (700Mb) in 4 hours 30 minutes - full speed 50Kb/s practically from the start; for me BT can't be beaten for big files, WinMX for songs and you're set, I don't know why you have probs it could be were you get your torrents:confused:

Films? Surely you really mean Linux ISOs :) Surely that's all anyone uses p2p for these days.

    Kazaa is good

Kazaa is spyware - lots and lots of spyware. Use Kazaa Lite Resurrection instead. Or use Limewire (I find the Limewire/Gnutella network is better).

It's probably the passive/active mode thing

Go into - Settings/General/Connection Settings and tick the "Active" box.Restart DC and you should be able to get peoples lists now.

Kazaa Lite Resurrection? Cool, wasn't aware they had come back. Must go look for it. Thanks Stark. Oh and yes Kazaa normal is horrible, avoid at all costs.

I use Apollon and I'm happy with it. You can get onto the KaZaA network aswell, though there's usually a lot more stuff on OpenFT. I must try this BitTorrent thing. Howver when I unzipped it, it just had a bunch of Python scripts, any hints on how to get this to work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭Chalk

    torrents are the future ;)

irc is good for new stuff if you get in ahead of the queue o_0
newsgroups still rock for high speeds (although not tecnically p2p)

but for fast widespread and free p2p the current king is Bit|Torrent

Out of interest, where do people get their torrents? I was using suprnova but getting horrible speeds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,107 ✭✭✭✭Stark

I use suprnova and I find the speeds to be excellent.

What broadband package are you on. If you're on standard DSL (512/128) then you should make sure your maximum upload speed in your bittorrent client is set to 12kb/s otherwise there won't be enough bandwidth for ICMP packets to be uploaded and the server will think it's flooding you and slow down.

As you said you're running Apollon I guess you're running Linux.
If you want to run the python files you need to open a terminal then

    # python script.py

or likewise. You might need to be root.

    Or you can get
    this

FAQ on the site, it's my choice of peer to peer.

    How-To Use Bittorrent On Linux:

This guide will attempt to teach you how to get Azureus, the Bittorrent client up and running on linux. Azureus provides a bittorrent protocol implementation using the java programming language. Azureus is an open-source, multi-platform application and can be used on many platforms, including linux. For more information on Azureus check out their website at - http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

Now, here are the steps for installing Azureus on your linux system :-

    1. Download a Java JRE from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html and then go on to install it. (Installation instructions are available on the Sun website here at - http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/jre/install-linux.html )

    2. Download the latest Azureus packages from 'http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=84122'. Select the correct package for your linux system, whether it be GTK or Motif, for me it was GTK, and it will most likely be GTK for you aswell. Extract the packages into your home directory by typing:

    tar xvjf Azureus_x.x.x.x_linux...tar.bz2

Where Azureus_x.x.x.x_linux...tar.bz2 is the name of the downloaded package.

    3. With some kind of text editor, edit the file 'azureus' within the directory you just extracted also named 'azureus' and at the top of the file you will see something like the following:

    JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR="" # use full path, ex. "/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2/bin/"

For a screenshot of the Azureus script - Click Here

Now, within the "" quotes you need to type in where your Java JRE, which you just installed, is located. For me it was "/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/bin/". To check, all you have to do is go into your /usr/java/ folder and see what the name of your J2RE folder is, and then begin that with '/usr/java' and follow it with a '/bin/' without the '' parts. So here is mine as an example:

    JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR="/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_04/bin/" # use full path, ex. "/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2/bin/"

    4. If all has gone well, you are good to go. CD to your directory and type:

    ./azureus

This should be something like your final result - Screenshot of Azureus running

tks agabus ;) i know youll never see this
should help you get BT running on linux

emerge bittornado <-- could it be easier ;)

As for suprnova ye I always get top speed from it; I've just finished getting Spliter Cell (1.6GB) in 12 hours (when I was asleep) I'm quite happy with it...google for youceff

warez p2p is ok, crashes my computer sometimes though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,541 ✭✭✭duridian

Warez P2P is dodgy IMO. I tried it some time ago and wasn't long giving it the boot when I noticed large upload activity during idle time. Further inspection showed that although I had set the program to only share one folder it had changed this setting itself after I had gone online with it and it was to my horror sharing virtually every file on my pc, including my system files. I 'd advise you to avoid it. Maybe this is happening to you too Antirip

Don't use any form of Kazaa. It's really gone downhill and only noobs who don't know better use it now.

Mp3 files contain loads of buzzing coz record company's put loads of fakes out.

Loads of exe's are renamed so you often don't get what you think your getting. The same with films.

Kazza was once great but it really is **** now.

I prefer BitTorrent for everything because it's way faster than anything else, but there's only a limited number of files on Suprnova. If I can't find a torrent for something, eMule almost always has what I want, but I'm usually waiting days for a ~700MB download to finish but I don't mind the wait.

Soulseek is great for single mp3's (or really hard to find albums)

Anyone still use WinMX? I still find it really great for getting mp3s, though the queues for rarer titles can be hideously long. Great for getting Japanese stuff too (if anyone cares).

any decent P2P software for LANs?

It's very pop in Asia - I use WinMx for all my mp3s

Just share your folders in Win.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,891 ✭✭✭Jammer

Just share your folders in Win.

Yeah but when you've 100's of folders each on 30/40 PC's...a search like kazzaa/emule would be cool! Plus, the "My Network Places" thing takes about 4 days to open when you've 6+ PCs in your neighbourhood!!

I find ABC (Another Bittorrent Client) to be the best for downloads (I've tried them all)

Can someone explain how to download via Newsgroups. I'm heard about them before as a good source of downloads but never been able to find out much about them.

    Thanks

kazaa is cr@p, has been for a couple of years now, far too much spyware and fakes, as someone said only noobs use it now who dont know any better.

winmx is the best for mp3's i think, i get all my music off there, can be slow at times but worth it as you NEVER get fake. ive downloaded over 500 mp3's and never got a single fake of winmx.

emule for rare stuff as it does basically have everything. not into downloading dvds as its just too long and once you watch a film once it just gets boring after that, alright if your after a new release though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 807 ✭✭✭ViperVenoM

i find limewire rather good for mp3's never had a dodgy one in over a year, also if theres files with a virus or something it tells you and deletes the file

my only problem is it keeps asking you to upgrade to pro...

however if you were also using bit torrent..you coul get past thi...ive said to much ;)

but yeh, limewire is good, emule is good for harder to find things ive found, and bit torrent is the daddy imo :D

IRC / Torrents are the best... im currently using BitComet C++ based so not as much of a resource hog compared to the like of Azerus.. as for E-Mule /E-Donkey i have seen plenty of fake files there the only good thing is it tells you a few mins into downloading.. getting 2Mb line very soon so gonna setting up FTP over IRC and using Newsgroups. if you gonna be using any of these respect the fact that people are encoding, setting up trackers and sharing their files, and do the same .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭Nukem

USe WinMX for music or Bearshare. Both only alright. Never used Kazaa must try it out sometime.

As for BT just got my little black box and its eating through files. Have loads of music and no real probs at all

Your settings in zonealarm or whatever security/firewall s/w you're using are blocking your client linking the to the torrent. On the error message there should be advice for avoiding this pitfall. Need to turn off privacy settings (as long as it doesn't bother you).

To whoever it was slagging off Warez p2p for sharing all their system files, I think that was a major flaw in an earlier version that did that by default if a box was not unticked during install. I use it fairly frequently these days and have had no probs. I really like the UI on warez (in comparison to say, KaZaA or MX)

As everyone else has said KaZaA is evil: K-lite is ok, but still has the problem that there are a lot of peeps out there renaming files, hosting corrupt stuff or just uploading you a virus. Caution is the watchword.
MX has far too many queues, for some reason. Good selection but you can end up in line for ages.

Just save target link as.. then open it with your BT client, from your harddrive. This should work fine if not try what Wertz suggested and turn off your anti-virus software and adblocker then try the link.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 176 ✭✭thetrickykid

Yep, adjusting the privacy settings in Zone Alarm worked a treat, cheers fellas.
