Shows that you wish WERE axed

So what shows did you enjoy but that you wish had been axed at a certain point when they became poor/crap/not the show you remember?
I'm not asking about what shows you've always hated - plenty of threads on that. More the ones which have been ruined by bad shows in the last few years.

I think the obvious one, and the one that'll be repeated often here, is the Simpsons, which should have been killed off around 1999. Nowadays, as a result of years of crap new episodes, the show is poisoned. But the poison is retroactive, and now taints my memory of ALL episodes so I can no longer watch the show :(

I think Buffy should have been axed at Season 5. Perfect ending was marred by two subsequently dreadful years that often made me want Buffy to die horrifically for being such an annoying bitch. Fortunately, the taint hasn't stained some of the superb earlier seasons.

Friends used to be funny in it's heyday but the last several years saw my interest fluctuate from disinterest to downright irritation, as if I were an inverted Chandler. I still think though the main spoiler for the older episodes is over-familiarity with them thanks to Friends TV (aka E4).

    I'm sure there's more that I can't think of...

Only fools and horses. Ended perfectly then they resurrected it with crap episodes

Big Brother. Nothing makes my blood boil more than that...

Sliders should have been axed as soon as it was heard that Jerry O'Connell was leaving the show.

League Of Gentlemen, I didn't think the 3rd season was all that great, whereas the 1st and 2nd seasons complemented each other nicely.

I think Fair City should be axed....not that I've ever liked it, it's just rubbish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,084 ✭✭✭✭Stark

On the soaps front, Home and Away, used to like it, but it has none of the original characters except Sally at this point, and I really don't like the new characters.

Agreed wholeheartedly - it really destroyed what could have been remembered as a classic series (in the same vein as, say, Fawlty Towers is).

While I agree Buffy suffered in its later seasons, frankly any Buffy is better than nothing, besides which, for all their faults, S6 and S7 at least had the musical and the return of Faith. I also thoroughly agree that somebody should have beaten Buffy's head in, preferably in the middle of one of those speeches she loved so much by the end. We might even have taken them seriously if SMG bothered to pretend se was interested any more...

Speaking of which, if killing Tru Calling guaranteed a F:VS spin off, I'd be quite happy. Its a nice enough show, and I've seen some improvement, but it just hasn't really...sparked....

Charmed, I would like to frisbee off the face of the f**king planet, along with everybody who was ever involved with the sole exception of Julian McMahon. It's one of the most high profile fantasy/ scifi shows and it gives everything else a bad, bad name. It stupids up television for everybody, and it hurts me. I know you specifically asked for shows that were once good, but its part of my life's cause to see this show end.

The X Files was dragged out well beyond its useful life. Its sad.. I think it should have ended ..maybe season 4? 5? Having said that, I actually did thoroughly enjoy one of the later episodes (with the Brady Bunch House?) I saw the other day...

Black Books, as much as it hurts me to admit, was a shadow of itself in the last season. I dunno what exactly was missing but... It was just too...linear...or something... I dunno...

Dawsons Creek was OK, but a little absurd for a while and then spiralled off up its own arse completely...

I hate 24 and I think The Sopranos needs to tie itself up before wasting episodes.
Will & Grace has become an exercicse in gay bashing, but with a fabulous special guest appearence each week to cover it up.

I wish they would just kill off 24-the first series was decent enough but the other two have been beyond bad.The League of Gentleman should never have had the third series it was fairly bad and of course the diabolical simpsons should have been killed brutally and swiftly around 99/00 but the idiots who still think its funny keep defiling its memory as a good show.

The X-Files. I used to love it up to a point and then I lost interest.

Earth: Final Conflict. Started off promisingly, got progressively worse and what ever were they thinking changing aliens for the final series?

What is RTE up to with this by the way? They showed the series finale a few weeks ago, followed by the final series opening episode.

Tru Calling, 24, Alias, all those Changing Rooms type affairs. Cripes, just about everything on TV sucks.

    Dark Angel

should have finished after the 1st series IMO

Agreed. Still the best pilot episode of anything I've ever seen though.

I am a big fan of 24, but i really think that if it were to be axed, it should've been at the 3rd series. I think a 4th series will ruin the 24 effect!

Well either that or they could always have just not turned it to sh1t over the summer break. A decent second series was possible if they hadn't mucked about with the storylines.

:( the 2nd series was depressing

Fair City - The biggest load of rubbish i've ever saw, how these lads are allowed on tv I'll never know.

Buffy - Went on way too long.

Angel - I never got it, just mind boggling bad.

Law and order - it just doesn't compare to CSI or Miami, Its gone, get it burn it.

Nip Tuck - A laugh of a show.

BIG BROTHER - it's just crap.

ALL SOAP OPERA. ......... especially Neighbour (sorry it far worse then Fair City)

I hate 24 and I think The Sopranos needs to tie itself up before wasting episodes.

24 should be axed but I will still watch the next season.
    The Sopranos is finished.

Angel bad? How much did you watch?! S2 had some great arc storylines and S4's big continuous story was amazing. Class stuff by any standard. I don't think you could qualify it as bad - just you don't like it.

As to the Law & Order franchise, I actually prefer it to the C.S.I. franchise (which I also watch). The storylines are generally more engaging (especially with Criminal Intent) and it's got a more grounded, realistic feel than C.S.I. Considering Law & Order is going into its 15th year and still regularly hits the Nielsen Top 10 ratings, it's rather foolish to say it's gone and burnt. Very few dramas (any?) last as long as that (and never mind it's three spin-offs!)

    Nice topic, Ixoy!

I have so many, i'll mention the two that i think personally were / are the most overrated unbelievably bad shows ever producer:

Will & Grace - why is this still on the air? I'm so sick of it - just using the same ol' gay stereotypes in every episode. If the writers are tired, just insert one of the token gay characters calling the other gay character a 'bitch' and an incident with a celebrity and oh, the hilarious incidents that ensue! It's not funny, it's not clever, character's are all very irritating! The show should be taken out and shot!

Sex And The City - i almost cried of sheer joy the day i found out this was going off the air. Sick of those tramps... why does Samantha start every episode with a question and then typically not answer it. I'm suprised the girls don't have 100's of STD's by the end of the 2nd series. If they replaced the women in this with men, the show would have been cancelled with controversy!

So, those are my two shows i wish were axed most. Also worth a mention:

    - All soaps on-air
    - Friends (after the 4th series)
    - Room Raiders / Cribs / Dismissed (any MTV documentary or dating type show)

I've loads more but mind has gone blank!

I found the S4 story arc too erratic myself. Kept building up to a climax with various threads then would suddenly drop that story thread and another thread would pop out of seemingly nowhere. I never got a feeling of resolution from it.

S5 storyline arc wasn't nearly as epic but at least threads got resolved.

Red dwarf , the last few series were terrible.

Simpsons, they need to let it die.

Family guy, they are making a 4th series and as much as I'd like to see new episodes I think it may go down hill.

X-files, the trouble was that they didnt really have an end to the story so they just kept on going.

Friends, Every series is exactly like the next I cant discern one from another and I never could.

I actually think Scrubs has never been particularly weak - the 3rd series wasn't as sharp as the 1st and 2nd series but it's still one of my favourite shows and in my opinion, the funniest show on TV!

Well, i'd say it'll be cancelled after the 5th series as Zach Braff (JD) said his contract is up then and he wants to carry on with directing feature films.

I really doubt they could continue the show without him!

When you realise that Fair City is in fact a comedy, it actually transforms into one of the most entertaining programs on television. Leo deserves a spin off.

Last night, Cops confiscated Blue Dophin's equipment as possible evidence in the whole robbery affair, ostensibly the hard drives of teh PCs needed to be examined. However, what was taken included computer monitors and a fax machine. Can someone please tell me how they are going to retreive information from either? As a comedy, it is first class.

I 100% agree. Law & Order is far ahead of CSI.

I think Fair City is useless soap fodder. The British are better making soap anyway.

I think Will & Grace, Simpsons & 24 are all dire.

    Current
    =================
    South Park
Malcolm in the Middle ('the older they get the funnier it ain't' etc)
Star Trek (should stop making spin-off shows for at least the next 20 years)
Scrubs .... season 3 started show a few cracks, I can only see it going into freefall from here. Prove me wrong mr. lawrence.
The Simpsons ... the past 6 seasons don't even exist as far as I'm concerned.
Six Feet Under ... might be good again by now, but I tuned out by the end of season 2.

    Past Shows
    ==========
Cheers ... went on even longer than Friends! It is my favorite yank sitcom but 11 seasons was just TOO much.
X-Files ... should've have been axed after season 5. The last 4 are just an incoherent mess.

Speaking of which personally I think some rule/law should be put in place to not allow shows go past season 5. For the rare show that actually keeps its quality beyond this point the vast majority are just milking it off their name and fact that they've been succeful enough to last that long.

I think most good shows reach a peak in S2, maintain the standard for S3 and then spiral off. In some cases, they've reached a point high enough to withstand for two more seasons...

    I wouldn't say that now
Startrek DS9, ST Voyager & Stargate SG-1 got better after S2 imho
Hell ST Voyager was going to be axed untill it greatly improved

Even Startrek Enterprise has gotten better in S2 imho
anyone tell I like ST yet? :p

Stargate, I'd mention though, is something of a freak: It's actually still getting better, flying in the face of all laws of God and Man...

Man that's too much of an open ended debate. It's like asking what songs should never have been written..Which gives me an idea for the metal forum..Anyway moving on here's shows that I wish had never been aired or should have been cancelled from the outset:
    1.Big Brother
    2.Cribs
    3.Glenroe
    4.The Osbornes
    5.The Salon
6.You're a Star(went to school with George Murphy, what an idiot)
    7.American Idol.
    8.I'm a celebrity,get me outta here
    9.Pimp My Ride
    10.Wife swap

So many good suggestions here, but you're forgetting the classic, America's Dumbest Criminals. Should be called America's Stupidest TV programming. So much canned laughter, fake criminals in fake situations, and fake presenters to top it all off. It's such a crock of sh1te it's not even funny in a sad and desperate way.
I think The Sopranos is ending in the next season, but I wasn't that impressed with season 5. It didn't seem to have the same punch that there was in previous years.
Startrek Enterprise got a lot better in season 3 but as has been mentioned in the ST forum, it reaks of some sort of impending temporal reset which is going to wipe out all the happenings of this season and will ultimately make the whole show crap. I'm looking forward to the next season but I reckon it's going to get very bad.
Big Brother should be canceled with all tapes of it destroyed and all memory of it erased from our minds. Then the creators should be publicly executed to prevent any future re-creation of such dribble.

ANY reality-based TV show should INSTANTLY face the chop - I mean it's not entertainment, it is blatent voyeurism & an exploitation of that... not saying everything should be like Discovery Channel or intelligent but come on - watching some bunch of cretinous a**eholes act like the wallys they are while they get their kicks out of 'being famous' [irony will never be lost on losers like that!!!!] - & I wonder why in the last few years the amount of television I watch has now come down to maybe 8-10 hrs a week.....waste of a licensing fee if you ask me....

Scrubs- Getting a bit scared it's gonna get crap.

Will and Grace - Argh! What the hell happened!? Up until S3 it was really good and now they just keep bringing in celebrities to keep up the ratings...

Who want to be a millionaire - Nobody watches it anymore! Why bother?! It's just the same thing over and over and over again.

Ant and Dec's Saturday nite take away - Had enough of it after the first show...

Yes any of these reality TV programmes and those Eurostar things, pop idol all that rubbish. Reality? They are unreal. What is really sad is that people watch them.

Australian soaps only lack 2 things: actors and a script!

Did anyone mention You've been Framed? I hate that show with a writhing passion. Was forced to be in the same room once at work as a TV on which it was being watched and was amazed that the exact same bad set ups are still being shown (and still being laughed at by the same unintelligent people!). I've got to think that a show that even Jonathon Wilkes is quitting has got to be axed...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,713 ✭✭✭✭jor el

OMG, is that tripe still on? I though it had been canceled along with that fat bird off Emerdale Farm. They could cancel Kirsty's home vids at the same time. It's just the same stupid people filming their kids being almost killed by falling trees and then continuing to film while the child lies on the ground crying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 228 ✭✭daggeredge

7th heaven --- Gotta love how the kids do drugs etc etc...say they're sorry and its all good again. Also the crappy theme music and the blonde daughter wrecks my head!!!
why do RTE still buy it (is it 6 episodes for a tenner now or what.... just to cover the cost of dvds by the way)

Agree with all the fair city haters!

Six feet under...lost interest after a while, good first few eps then died!!!!

that crap my sister watches....the Gilmore girls!

Sabrina the teenage witch, kill it, kill it!!!!That harvey guy annoys me. What age is Mellisa now anyway 30-35?? I remember watchin nickelodeon when Clarissa was on 10-15 years ago & she was saying how she was 20 and was bangin on bout her cars...
(Now think the "never been kissed" spoof in Not Another Teen Movie!!!)
Salem though should have his own series..only thing that makes it remotely bearable

    On a sidenote.....
    (RANT)
Incidentally there is an independant enquiry at the mo' in2 RTE to see do they have an unfair advantage with the money from TV licences... Considering they get every penny from the licences and more from advertising, I'd say so! We know tv3 isn't as good as them but at least its still broadcasting... If the current licence system was abolished I'd be happy would just watch digital...whats the point in payin 4 channels you don't use

I thought if anybody were to pick up on something it would be that "7th heaven" show (GAAArgh I'm singing the title in my head) I really do hate it......

BuffyBot - are u sure Sabrina's dead? (don't want to get my hopes up) I thought it had ended on the college version but then they lauched a "oooh look she's employed now and grown up" version - actually did they still end the title of this 1 with "the teenage witch"

Another thing I hate come to think of it and its not an actual show but those awful American "made for TV" movies TV3 insists on feeding us!Terrible!

Yes it was stilled called Sabrina: The Teenage Witch up until the end and yes it IS over because I saw all the episodes, including the finale where:
She runs away on her wedding day to flee with her one true love, Harvery
. As series finales go, it wasn't half bad. Oh and the final season had her working full time in a magazine, so that's probably how you got confused...
