Intestesting point there. A friend is currently on three month's contract in Shanghai for a multi-national, lots of industry there, dozens of magnificent skyscrapers, tons of ex-pats trying to make it rich - but one thing that is really striking (says my friend) is how 'low-tech' and 'backward' he finds it behind the sheen of the skyscrapers and new roads. He is a logistics manager trying to modernise a factory system over there.

curiously after reading through these posts, thre seems to be no actual reason for why either side would want to risk all out war with the other. neither of them view Taiwan as that big a prize. The odds of France and germany attacking each other again would be higher imo. (but still overall incredibly small)
