Roman Catholic leaders in Austria called an emergency meeting today after officials discovered a vast cache of photos and videos allegedly depicting young priests having sex at a seminary.

About 40,000 photographs and an undisclosed number of films, including child pornography, were downloaded on computers at the seminary in St Poelten, about 50 miles west of Vienna, the respected news magazine Profil reported.

Officials with the local diocese declined to comment but were meeting privately on the scandal, Austrian state television reported.

It said the seminary’s director, the Rev Ulrich Kuechl, and his deputy, Wolfgang Rothe, had resigned.

The Austrian Bishops Conference issued a statement today pledging a full and swift investigation.

“Anything that has to do with homosexuality or pornography has no place at a seminary for priests,” it said.

Church officials discovered the material on a computer at the seminary, Profil said. It published several images purportedly showing young priests and their instructors kissing and fondling each other and engaging in orgies and sex games.

The child porn came mostly from web sites based in Poland, the magazine said.

Bishop Kurt Krenn, a conservative churchman who oversees the St Poelten Diocese, told Austrian television he had seen photos of seminary leaders in sexual situations with students. Krenn, however, dismissed the photos as “silly pranks” that “had nothing to do with homosexuality”.

A group of St. Poelten Diocese officials planned to ask the Vatican to remove Krenn as bishop, Austrian radio reported.

Vatican spokesman Ciro Benedettini told the Austria Press Agency that the Holy See had no comment.

Krenn, 68, issued a statement calling the accusations groundless while conceding that he “may have made some wrong personnel decisions” at the seminary.

Exactly. Its only in this day and age that people can see the catholic church for what they really are. Still a bloddy shame they will never pay for their crimes against humanity properly.

For years I've thought that if (hypothetically) the Catholic Church allowed priests to have sex and marry then 99% of these abuse problems would disappear.

Priests having sex in the Seminary is nothing new. I'd have no problem with that if they'd keep clear of underage kids.

    Indeed.

I say good on them re: the orgy's. You need something to counteract all those masses ;)

maaaaannnn its just not natural to repress your sexual urges unless its for a certain amount of time to ''refresh'' or whatever, but for priests, i think it can really mess up their heads..man is a sexual animal....god that child porn thing is just phucking disgusting..but you get so used to hearing it theses days it just seems to slide out of your conscience..:dunno: :(

tut, tut. But ye I know what you mean.

Here's another article on ORF about it.
    ORF article (In german)

The Bishops comment here are laughable but unfortunately not surprising. Denial is the normal defense I do believe.

(For those who can't get the gist of it he claimed the photos were just photos, bad photos but nothing criminal about them. And apparently there was nothing homosexual about what was in the photos.)

Unfortunately not, paedophiles will abuse children no matter what other relationships they are in. That there is such a high number of paedophiles in the priesthood is because paedophiles are attracted to positions where they will have power over children rather than the lifestyle of being a priest turning otherwise normal people into child abusers.

Indeed, they should be encouraged to bugger each other senseless. They could even put on live shows for the old bags on a sunday morning, that would liven things up.

Pity the only nuns I know are over 50 and a bit mad.

Then again, in my head they are in their early 20's, all wearing black, and are very, very naughty......

its like that sex in the city episode where samantha tries to ride the pious monk-hunk.....would anyone feel guilty if they had feelings for a nun/priest (provided they are young and good-looking) and went on a mission to seduce them? i would:dunno: ....for maybe two seconds!!

Seriously tho, are any of us really that surprised?
You cant expect to coop a bunch of guys up together for years on end with no access to women and expect them not to get a bit horny now and again. Come on, weve all seen Oz, right? You know what goes on when someone drops the soap.
Still doesnt excuse the kiddy fiddling tho, shower of bastards.

Probably best it wasn't. That would be spookily reminicant of the African missionary scandals.

I agree that there is an immensely/disturbingly high incidence of paedophillia among Catholic priests but I disagree that marriage/sex wouldn't alleviate the problem greatly. Priests having the opportunity of a normal family life would, in my view, make the church a far more natural/normal environment and remove a lot of the temptation to resort to child abuse. Yes, some child abusers will always sucumb to the temptation but many others given the correct environment might never even consider it.

In my view a life of enforced abstinence from both sex and the normal intimacy of a relationship is not a suitable situation for most people.

"Anything that has to do with homosexuality or pornography has no place at a seminary for priests,”

So homosexuality is as evil as child porn, then? Sparks will fly.

It sickens me that anybody would interfere with children, especially priests. I'm not generally in favour of the death penalty, but when it comes to anyone harming a child I would be swayed in favour of it.

Regarding the incidence of paedophilia in the Catholic Church, there doesn't appear to be any evidence that the Catholic church has a higher instance than any other church. This is perhaps a redundant point but as the comment was made above about an "immensely/disturbingly high incidence of paedophilia among Catholic priests" it may be worthwhile to be informed.

I have a friend who is a straight shootin', mass goin' every Sunday sort of chap who sincerely believes that all the abuse scandals in the Catholic Church are the result of it being infiltrated by Communist agents over the last 50 years in order to subvert and undermine it from the inside?!?!?!

Homosexuality among priests is no surprise at all. Abolishing the rule on celibacy would really do nothing for the priesthood because 1) belief among intelligent people has collapsed which is why there are so few student priests and 2) the priesthood in most west european and us churches attracts homosexuals. Why? I dunno. Ask them.
The problem with gay orgies in seminaries is this: the RC Church utterly condemns gay sex and gay orientation so what are the very people who claim to stand against homosexuality doing engaging in it? Its a problem of hypocrisy; its a problem that is connected to the pedophilia problem in that there seems to be one law for clerics and another for lay people. If you are a gay priest fine; get your kit off with Fr. Big. If you are a gay man f*** off. If you are a priest pedophile, we'll move you on to fresh pastures, if you are a lay pedophile well that's different. If the Church practised what it rammed down people's throats for generations it would stop hemoragging respect and members.

Maybe because there's no chance of having a meaningful [ie. marriage] relationship with a woman, no great loss for a gay guy.
