I can't stop myself from laughing at Multipla drivers, it looks eerily like The Homer and that scares me.

Cars are like boyfriends/girlfriends. It's not all about what's on the inside. He/she/it has to look half-way decent too.

The Hyundai Santa Fe soft roader has to be the ugliest thing since the Ford Scorpio (thankfully dead and not coming back). Did Hyundai do like on Fight Club and steal all the goo from the back of a hospital and use it to make the prototypes?

As for the Multipla, Fiat sold so few of them , they have redesigned the snout on the '04 car so it doesn't look like a confused hippo anymore.

I wouldn't be bothered qualifying it meself, just leave it at "puntos". But to be fair, they're not really badly designed, they're just common. You know, like Fiestas. :)

I think we should stick with bad design. If we go with mods, I could just take my camera out and walk around the city for half an hour. (I'm not kidding. I passed one of those lovely Peugeot hardtops earlier today, with a nice respectable bodykit and surprisingly well-chosen alloys. Then I noticed the "with-it" stickers and the horrendous lexus lights. So near, and yet so far. :))

    Ford Scorpio

The world wasn't ready for them 10 years ago, but I'm afraid I like them now. I'm glad I didn't buy one though, they're a lot commoner than I thought!

    Ford Ka

I have to confess to liking these too, although only the top of the line ones. Don't you think they're dinky when they're all kitted out? :)

    Austin Allegro

Absolutely. Especially if they're beige. A friend of mine had to drive around in a dark green one of these with a go-faster aerial about the size of the ones you see on tanks -- you know the ones that have to be tied down at the back? I kid you not.

    PT Cruiser

    Uh-oh. I like these too. I dunno, they're "kustomy".

    New Micra

    Any Micra.

    Porsche Cayenne

Don't like Porsches in general, but that isn't bad looking. It's obscenely expensive mind, but that's not what we're talking about here...

THE HONDA INSIGHT! God damn, that is hideous.

Christ, it is. It's like they took a Civic (a resoundingly shít car, if you don't mind me saying so) and a Citroen, and /rammed/ them together. Badly.

But what do I know? I think Anglias and Volvo 240's are totally cool.

I have to say I kinda like the late Renaults. They remind me a little of the Citroen DS, a car which I would genuinely give up a testicle for.

[EDIT: BTW, is it just me or is that Dacia yoke the spit off a Saab 99? And while I'm on the subject, what is it with Saab and the number 9?]

Which late Renaults? I sure hope there isn't another insult coming up. The late Renaults that are RIP like the 12 (thank heavens) or modern ones?

The DS would get my number 1 vote in the car of the 20th century poll. I don't know why there are so few around in this country :dunno:

Cos they'll have rusted to bits or otherwise died of neglect. People in Ireland don't know the value (monetary or otherwise) of old cars. I was doing a job a few years back for a farmer in Tipp who had a beautiful LHD Opel GT decomposing in a haybarn. He said it had been there for 6 or 7 years. Covered in cow**** and silage. It's probably still there... :(

This is an Opel GT in case you were wondering:

On the Citroen ID/DS, there are a few fine examples in the Waterford area including one which was pressed into action by local city council canditate Oli Dempsey (his rather lovely daughters acted as moped outriders!) but as he's a classic car collecting, handlebar moustache wearing architect he can get away with that sort of thing!

As ChipZilla says, cos they fell apart. Neglect on one side, scrappage scheme on the other, both conspiring to kill thousands of cool cars. There's one around the corner from me here, it leers at me every time I pass it -- "you don't own me, you don't own me". Is it weird to whisper "I'd prefer a black one anyway" every time you pass a white DS? :)

Mike, I'm afraid I love those big old american heaps. Little bit of hydraulic work and you could have a whale of a time. Pardon the pun.

    Anyone for some rust?....

    panda.jpg

Things I particularly despise about this car:

    1. The door handles
    2. The crappy single wiper
    3. The dodgiest looking door mirrors
    4. ...Eh...the whole shape of the car!!

Then Fiat think to themselves, "hey, let's bring the Panda back out again, cause that was good car!" :D

These old American cars are far better than any of the modern Euro-box cars. I don't understand why such a large number of people on this side of the Big Pond seem to dislike them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,968 ✭✭✭✭mike65

They're big fat and stupid! I tend to react badly on two seperate grounds A) they consume vast amounts of everything to little effect - such cars are slow, ineffecient, ponderous, often not well built. And B) Just ugly for the most part.

As for euroboxes, many are not great but you can at least steer your way out of trouble in one! :)

Ugly car design and bad car design are not necessarily the same thing. A car can be considered ugly by a lot of people but still be a good vehicle underneath or have some redeeming features Example the Ford Scorpio. For this reason I wouldn't class the Scorpio, FIAT Panda, Multipla, R12 etc. as being the "worst design ever"

One car that I regard as a bad design is the VW Golf Mk3. This thing looks like a bloated slug and drives like one too with stodgy handling and poor ride. It's also dog slow when fitted with a 1.4 or 1.6 engine. It's boring as hell, seats are hard, equipment is stingy, reliability is nothing to write home about. Its great reputation for reliability is mainly due to clever marketing and hype. It has a great image - among people who know nothing about cars. Its only virtues are a solid feel and good safety. But overall, the car was a piss-poor effort by VW.

Yeah had the same reaction to that one giftgrub, some more recent mazda models are almost as bad (3rd generation 323F, Demios, etc) :(

Just as well the company was saved by the FMC, who seem to get a lot of things right recently

Better in what way? Sure there is something to say for the old US adage of "there's no substitute for cubic inches" in combination of some of the tried and tested big V8's provided "gas" is cheap ;)

Had a rental Chrysler Sebring Convertible on a business trip to Florida a few years ago and it was a nice looking car with all mod cons and a fat 2.7 liter V6, but wobblethewobble it went, like an egg cooked for about 30 seconds or a chunk of jelly :)

I'll concede that the new models aren't often much to talk about. I remember I had a little Pontiac Sunbird on rental for a while back in about '95 and wasn't at all impressed, but then that particular car is very European-ized. And the late-model engines are pretty lacking in power compared to their earlier counterparts due to the ever-increasing emissions requirements.

But if we're going back to the cars of 30-ish years ago, there's no comparison (on the whole -- I'll ignore disasters like the Ford Pinto). Big engines that run smoothly, nice designs, and 2 tons of Detroit metalwork around you instead of the two sheets of kitchen foil stuck together that seems to form the bodywork of most modern Euro cars.

Just about all the american designed cars look like crap. Chrysler, Chevy, Oldsmobile, Buick, Dodge, GMC, all SUV's etc. There are a few exceptions, kinda like the Sebring as well myself, the Olds Alero isn't too bad either. Dodge has this monstrosity for sale now the Dodge Magnum that I have seen on the TV that I would like to submit as a worst design.
