Joey - Friends spinoff

I had a look at the pilot for this today (amazing what broadband and a lack of conscience gets you these days). While not as dissappointing as the final episode of Friends (yes I was a fan) I must say it was pretty poor. Joey has moved to LA to pursue more acting roles and it seems like most of the show is taken up with references to New York and his Friends friends. A few brief laughs to be had but overall it was like the producers were hoping for another hit like Friends on a budget. Only one high paid star instead of six and presumably the cheapest of the writers from the old team.

If you watched it, what did you think?

I was tempted to download it alright, but I'd doubt it's worth 200 odd megs of my bandwidth.

But this pilot will not be aired, and many of the characters in it have been re-cast already.

That's a relief to hear. His sister, for one, is an annoying tart.

is she the one who was in the sopranos? thats who it was in the TV ad IIRC

yeah, robert, its yer wan from the Sopranos... saw it myself, and it was crap... if they do re shoot it due to recasts, I hope they work on the script...

theres a line in it where Joey gets some bad news and says:
"My show is dead, its not even going to air!"

..... a prophecy?? going by the pilot, I hope so.

I hope they get rid of Jennifer Coolidge, her dialogue and delivery is seriously lacking.

I thought exactly the same thing! She's terrible in it!

The only joke i somewhat laughed at in the whole thing is the line where the nephew says about his mother raising him since she was 22. And he says something like 'Yeah, that's why we had to move churches!' or something like that.

Thought Paulo Costanzo (Joey's nephew) looked really young in it compared to his roles in 'Road Trip' and '40 Days And 40 Nights'. Could easily pass for a 20 year old.

The hot blonde neighbour has been fired from it after the first episode, so some serious recasting to be done!

I saw it as well. Curiosity is a terrible thing.

It wasn't too bad. I wasn't a big Friends fan but I can see some potential in this spin off. If done right of course. I was glad to hear about recasts but the blond neighbour is the only one I read about who was recast. I've no idea why that was, she didn't have a big anough part to be annoying. The agent has to go. I didn't really like the sister that much either but the nephew has a good delivery in him.

It should be ok if they stop Joey from being too stupid. I always hated those moments in Friends when he was just a charicature of "stupid Joey". He should remain dim but I'll be switching off if the show is just about him being stupid.

I heard that Justin Timberlake wants to do a guest apperance in an episode to help launch his acting carrer ??? So far they said no, I hope it stays that way.

Saw this, typical pilot - main character in every scene.
Some poor delivery from blonde (married) neighbour and Joey's sister (Drea de Matteo). Some re-casting needed there. Paulo Costanzo could make a good replacement for Chandler - "I hear they're making a new Indiana Jones movie - maybe you could turn that down...?".
Some funny lines - there's a lot of potential there, so long as they don't focus on completey on Joey every episode.

And Joey's apartment reminds me of the Bundy's house in Married with childeren for some reason.

I wasnt a big friends fan but liked joey pilot.
Very funny imo may even be worth watching.

Judging by the way they treat quite a few shows they could do anything with it. Odds are good that they'll look towards the usual Monday night yoof comedy slot though.

Ensure you have the right codecs as I had problems installing it too. Get a program called GSpot to do the hard work for you :)

Perfect. Had to screw around with everything - it wasn't for lack of updating, just that one of the files was corrupted  . Anyway! Thanks for your help ixoy - it's appreciated :) enjoyed the first few minutes - hopefully, it's all this good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,872 ✭✭✭segadreamcast

Impressive stuff. The first five minutes were good, along with Joey's audition for the entertainment news show...good stuff...hopefully it can stay like this.

I'd say the sister has to be changed - she is really grating with me already. Nobody in friends ever grated with me...actually, nobody in any successful sitcom that I liked annoyed me noticably.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,002 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Ah this wasn't half as bad as I feared. I'm not sure how much of this will reach our screens - the neighbour, anyway, has been recast due to negative reaction but Adriana (I'm gonna call her this) is still set to stay on.
I got a few laughs from this, helped by the fact that I watched it in company. It's hardly 'Family Guy' but it was above a good bit of the least season of Friends.

TBH I'm not sure what made the testing audiences react negatively to the neighbour - I wonder was it the fact that she was married? Did people feel she was too 'perfect', considering the effect she had on Joey initially? Hm... odd, just because I hate 'Adriana' :p.

Also: Hands up who noticed Joey's agent was in Friends before?
'Chandler: That womans a bitch, but she sure can dance!'

Mmm, she used to play Monica's annoying friend if I'm not mistaken! The one with the semi-english accent.

Ya ain't been reading the DaVinci code have you?

It's one of those transition cipher thingies (or is that displacement cipher? Or a Caesar cipher?) Anyway, basically transition the letters 13 places on. Example: A is 1. 1+13 = 14. The 14th letter of the alphabet is N.
    So for fhe we get:
    f = 6 + 13 = 19 = s
    h =8 + 13 = 21 = u
    c = 3 + 13 = 16 = p

... and so on. If you get a figure greater than 26, just use the modulus operator :)
    Clear?

Ah it is. The cipher used above is one of the oldest and simplest of ciphers. Honestly, I remember reading up, and using those, when I was in primary school. The DaVinci code is very easy to understand, principally because Dan Brown repeats what's going on ad nauseaum, long after you've understood his point.

I was being sarcastic. But I do remember doing those in school waaaaaay back when!

DaVinci Code - great book. Kind of got trapped into buying that after completing an online puzzle website that the author/publishers had dreamt up. Good gimmick, though.

Just to put things back on topic a bit, I found Joey very, very disappointing. Laughed aloud only once and managed to chuckle a few times (though thought myself foolish cos the jokes weren't that funny anyway!)...

Joey's apartment set is dreadful, will be very hard to get used to.

I didn't mind his neighbour that much; of all the plots covered, that one seemed to me to have the most potential for the future. It is also a good thing that the pilot removes the character from the surroundings he is most accustomed to - acting in successful TV shows. If he is forced to rely on something else, this (finally) gives him the scope to widen the character beyond the relatively wafer-thin one he portrayed in Friends.

I actually hope the entire pilot is redone - everything about it from casting to sets just seemed wrong, and certainly lacking the makings of a successful sitcom.

Finally, one thing that will probably change, but shouldn't, is the opening title song.

In fact, pilot season this year has been pretty poor overall - the only two I saw which I see great potential in are "Jack and Bobby" (from the producers of Everwood) and "Lost" (from the creator of Alias).

Lost, in particular, will probably become cult fodder, an immediate hit like 24.

The opening title song - as in the one that wasn't "HOLLYWOOD!" (which I had to endure a billion times due to my initial audio yet no video problem)? Yes, it was a terrible opening theme - I really hope they change it to something else....something a bit more catchy.

A pity the Rembrandts only produced one song worth using eh :P? Would've given the show a further feeling of continuity.

The Fibonacci sequence - it's the first ten digits.

Whoops - missed page three of the thread until after I posted.

That bloody puzzle drove me nuts too, but not quite as frustrating as the Marillion-sponsored (ultimately) 'Let's drive people mad so they'll never forget us' one from a few months back.

As for the original Joey pilot theme -
"The opening title song - as in the one that wasn't "HOLLYWOOD!" (which I had to endure a billion times due to my initial audio yet no video problem)? Yes, it was a terrible opening theme - I really hope they change it to something else....something a bit more catchy."

Must've misread my post - I actually said I thought that theme (not the 'Hollywood' one) was pretty decent and catchy. I actually hope they keep it. But the titles font was dreadful, I hope those are fully redone.

Definitely - as I say, for me it was one of the two finer pilots this year. Nothing else I saw came close to this level of 'perfection' (bearing in mind 90% of first episodes are never that great...)

Seems to be still available, but bear in mind the pilot may be slightly tweaked before launch proper - which isn't far off (September 20th-ish). That said, this is closer to a finished pilot (it did have a budget of $10m+) than any other - complete with full cast credits, which are usually left out.

I believe ABC are planning to split the 90-minute pilot into two 45s, which won't be nearly as much of a TV 'event' - there's something about how it works full-length that I don't think will come across in shorter form, particularly seeing as the first 20 minutes are very slow.

Do post what you think of it if you see it. I'm hoping I'm not along in seeing its potential (though how they'll get a several-year-spanning series out of this still escapes me...)

Yeah I misread it - thought it said "probably will but shouldn't".

Anyway, it's too bland - reminds me of Veronica's closet too for some unknown reason...

I agree Joey isn't, but "Lost" definitley is.

I reckon Joey will die a death and be cancelled by year's end...

Or if it isn't cancelled this year, it will limp on to a second year with NBC
hoping for a prolonging of the franchise, before dying its death in 2006.
They allowed Veronica's Closet (which someone mentioned earlier) to continue
even though its audience had all but been wiped out by its third year.

I don't think this character will sustain a sitcom for several years.

I finally got around to watching it last night. Well worth getting. I thought it had an interesting storyline which definitely hooked me. The only problem was that I now have to wait till the start of October to see what happens next

    Not exactly!

The episode that's online is the pilot that they've shown to test audiences but as far as i know, it tested so bad that they scrapped it!

Expect a new pilot to start the series!

Also, the blonde neighbour got fired after that episode so they'll probably have to recast her before the reshoot of the first episode.

Unless they're planning on pulling a 'Roseanne' or 'Game On' on us all

Remember in Roseanne, they changed the actress who played the daughter Becky twice mid-way through the series (at one stage, it was Sarah Chalke who plays Elliott in 'Scrubs')

Or Game On, where they changed the actor who played Matthew after the first series (as the actor who played him in the first series, Ben Chaplin, went off to Hollywood and made a few films with the likes of Uma Thurman and Winona Ryder)

    Irritating!!

PS: Sorry to go slightly off topic there at the end! :o
