    Nirvana are overrated. Nowadays.
But back in 1991, there was nothing better than them. Who was everybody listening to at the time? ZzTop... Hammer, whacko jacko?

    soundgarden, pearl jam?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,353 ✭✭✭radiospan

Nirvana are good, yes, but way overrated.

Too many people talk of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana as being untouchable. Bollocks.

    I do like them though.

    Pearl Jam, big time overrated.

Nirvana were one of the most influential bands of the 90s-yes i kno that there are loads of kids going around with the "i hate myself and i want to die" teeshirts these days, because nirvana are "so in" this year. But that should not taint their artistic credibility.

    Overrated-Slipknot,Metallica,The pixies,Megadeth.Queen,Blur

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

    Slayer, Metallica, Nirvana.

Dunno what people see in Slayer really, their pretty good, but their heralded as god's in far too many people's eye's :dunno:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭Explosive_Cornflake

U2 i think i over rated. I know how people will re act to this though, but its just my opinion.
    Nirvana i'd agree with.
A lot of bands you see people wearing t-shirts off, and you know they don;t listen to to.
Such as ramones t-shirts and so on.

I've said it once, I'll say it again, and I'll keep saying it until some bikers beat the **** out of me and break my jaw.

    CANNIBAL CORPSE!
I mean... come on. Is it the song titles? Is it the fact its "Manly" death metal? I don't get it.. The music ****ing sucks.

Corpse were a legend of a band. ****ty production on the earlier albums, but good. The Bleeding is a master piece i think. Gore rotted was a piece of crap. The Wretched spawn aint so great either. It all fell apart after barnes left really. i think he used to right most of the songs, they are just stupid now.
But, if you haven't listened to the bleeding do, that is a good album.
Good live band, but not good at making albums anymore, just very formulaic.

I'd have to agree with you, nosmo...

Cannibal Corpse are just a terrible band.

To be honest _most_ bands out there are over-rated. Everyones taste is different, and everyones taste usually changes over time. As for Nirvana / Pixies being over-rated - what a bunch of fools you are. Both bands changed the face of music decades ago. They may be "over-rated" these days, but I think what you mean is that they're music isn't modern - and how would it be? Compare like to like - compare the Pixies with their contemporaries, not modern day bands. Ditto with Nirvana.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭Explosive_Cornflake

You were the first person o mention the pixies in this thread?

Slipknot,HIM,Nirvana -Thats the lot as far as I can see.

Any rock band that sold records and dissapointed anyone is overrated by someone. I'll go for Velvet Undeground.

    Mike.

I goin to stick my neck out here and say

    Guns n roses..

They only have a small number (4 of the top of my head) of good songs -> Paradise City, Sweet Child Of Mine, Welcome To The Jungle and November Rain..

they couldnt get enough songs for their greatest hits so they did covers..

    Overrated as a band yes..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 467 ✭✭Cheez

I agree with slayer, guns and roses being overrated but they've decent musicians at least. Leave poor Nirvana alone,Foo Fighters are far more overrated-stick to drummin thats what you're better at. spose he's makin a fair few pound fifty for himself so he may aswell.

A 'hit' is a fact, hits are bottom of the barrell catchy downright mass-dumb-ass-audience. Lots of GN'R fans were saying 'this and that' should have been on the GH, but those songs voiced simply weren't hits hence the need of the 'best ofs' in music. For example people wanted Estranged on it, but even though it's the their best song it was never a hit per say, okay.

As a stupid GN'R fan i hate their hits, i never got the dumb-ass GH.
Am i glad that you don't like them and won't be listening to other pure KILLER albeit maybe not 98FM-hit-songs? - Yes

Get in the in ring! :D

I don't think Nirvana and the Pixies are overrated. They did do a phenomenable amount to change the way music affected people's lives. And having seen the Pixies yesterday, that was music! Outstanding. I think anyone who gets the huge amounts of acclaim has got to be overrated. I mean, nobody's that good. People like RHCP, Metallica, Slipknot, all incredibly overrated. Good but overrated.

I think AC/DC are over rated, everyone seems to listen to them at the moment and think they are amazing, but once you heard one of their songs you have heard them all, they all sound the same..

Well Slayer basically started the whole death metal genre with help from Morbid Angel. You really can't argue with that. And before someone says it, no I don't think Venom or Celtic Frost had a big influence on the genre. They had some, but not a big influence.

The most overrated band ever are Nirvana, without a doubt.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 museslave

fact is nirvana didnt change the face of music alone... they had the help of pearl jam and soundgarden... but personally i cant c how they changed music... like no other decent bands came out that are like them. they may hav influenced other bands but thats it... anyway bands get loads of different inspirations

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭Dathai

The most overrated band is the one that did nothing for rock and are loved by morons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭Explosive_Cornflake

Sorry to (very) picky but slayer aren't death metal, they'd be thrash metal. But yes, Morbid Angel and slayer did help bring up newer styles of metal to the front.

I wouldn't say slayer are over rated. All their albums were ace up until 1994.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

I have to say 3 of the most overrated "acts" out there are Funeral For A Friend, AFI and the Foo Fighters.

The first two are just crap, I don't know why they were signed, but they're NOT good, and if it weren't for MTV being so buyable they'd be long forgotten. And as for the foo fighters, well I guess its the Grohl effect, plus their blandness being interpreted as "mass appeal"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭nadir

AFI, overrated? no way, I saw em last year, they kicked ass.
also gun 'n roses overated? appetite for destruction is amazing, and if you pooled use you illusions 1 and 2 into a single album it would probably be even better.
Nirvana, definately overrated, Perl-Jam, no i dont think so, granted they have alot of poor material, but they also have alot of quality stuff.
AC/DC are really awesome, but you got to take it in context, they have been around so long, they really have added alot of origional material to music and influenced countless bands, I dont think you could possibly call them over rated.

I guess its good to look at a band in terms of how origional they are, and how much they influence other bands, trends etc.

Happened to me aswell, something to do with boards having to be rolled back, hence a day's worth of posts being binned as such.

RHCP aren't really rock. They're pop/rock. At the moment they are crap. Go back 15 years and they're one of the best things going.

The thing about Nirvana was they made Grunge that had a little more mass appeal than bands like Soundgarden who were really underground. This meant that people were hearing this and thought, "Hey, that's good. What kind of music's that?" Then they hear that it's grunge and they're thinking, "Who else are called grunge?" And this is how people discovered Alice in Chains and Soundgarden.

AFI kick ass. They have a really different sound to anyone else. Funeral for a Friend I'll agree with. They have something going on but nothing that justifies their success.

And as for elvis, I don't think Nirvana destroyed guitar solos. They definitely did them differently though. Kurt was a very low class guitaris for someone who played for so long and he had to find a way to write solos that didn't sound terrible without making them so complicated he couldn't play them. That's the Nirvana sound and it's stuck. No matter what you and other people who hate them say, it's stuck.

The Doors are/were the most over-rated band of the 60's. Jim Morrison was a pretentious w*nker who took the genre of rock music, particularly lyrics, way too seriously. This in itself has been a bad influence. The Doors did have some good songs, i'll give them that, but the vast majority of their catalogue is piss-poor.

Ditto the Sex Pistols. Many proclaim that they changed music and they have undoubtedly been influential. But nothing about them was remotely new or innovative. Despite saying they despised the Rolling Stones and all they stood for, the fact is that their punk attitude was merely a more extreme version of the Stones own surly posing back in the 60's, and, apart fom Johnny Rotten's singing, their music wasn't all that different either (just not as good). The Clash are were its at in terms of punk's musical importance.

As regards Nirvana, in no way did they 'revolutionize' rock, all they did was revive the public's interest in it, at a time when it looked like it was at deaths door. They weren't doing anything 'new' as such. But this doesn't mean that they weren't a fantastic band, because they clearly were. And Cobain certainly wasn't a virtuouso guitar player, but what he had over Eddie Van Halen and Slash et al was that he was a truly great songwriter.

As for contemporary bands, I have to agree with whoever put down the Strokes and Coldplay -what do people see in them?

How dare you insult them like that! Sure their more recent stuff hasn't been metalish but there's no bloody harm in that sure! You should recieve an enema for saying they're a sad excuse for metal- you saying Kill 'Em, Ride, Master and ...And Justice are sh*t excuses for metal albums? F**k that!

I think Nirvana are now....seeing as though Kurt Cobain was a junkie and probably would have wound up writing really crap songs and fade off...But I'm gonna have to say Overall I think Metallica are over rated as I feel alot of there songs sound the same and I think they stole a Hendrix riff in Nothing Else Matters!!..Which makes me mad!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,655 ✭✭✭Ph3n0m

Since rock attained perfection in 1972, everything after that is over-rated :D:D:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,149 ✭✭✭✭Lemming

Hmmmm, hard to name rock bands with any conviction, since some of the ones I'd think of have in some way contributed to the genre.

    But .......

I would have to name GnR. One sterling performance of a first album followed by ever declining mediocrity with the occasional glimpse of inspiration ever since. Great band, seriously overrated though.

Nirvana would spring to mind too, as would the sex pistols (even though they're not 'rock' per-se)

Now with all that said, I can give you the name of the most overrated *band* of all time without doubt:

    Oasis

I agree with those who say Nirvana are over-rated. They were a decent enough band, they revived popular interest in rock music etc., but they weren't Gods and they didn't reinvent the genre or do anything incredible.

Metallica. They're a decent enough band, they have some good songs, but there are legions of better metal bands-better musicians, more varied music, more innovative, more melodic etc., that get no recognition.

Funeral For a Friend. Mundane rubbish. End of story.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers. A decade ago they were great. Even Californication was quite good. Then By The Way came out, and they were praised for the 'innovation' on that album. Here's a tip, lads, if you're gonna be 'innovative' and more varied in the music you create, do it well, or else stick to what you're good at.

Hole. Again, a semi-decent band, but they weren't one of the best riot grrrl groups, and bands like Babes in Toyland and Sleater-Kinney deserve more recognition than they do.

Slipknot. Maybe it's just that what I've heard isn't great, but I don't understand their appeal. Yes, there are worse bands, but come on, are the masks and the 'enigma' of hidden faces what sell?
