Gyms

    Hi Lads,

I was wondering if any one knew of any gyms in Limerick to join (if you know their web address that would be great, please write down).

I am not the best gym go'er in the world but I was in a gym in Cork recently and I really enjoyed it. I had a great time.

The main reason being that everyone in the gym has their own tv in front of them that they can control (BBC, sky etc). All you need to bring it a pair of head phones and plug it in for sound. Great Idea.

I have to admit, I like the idea of exercising but after 15 mins on a treadmill I get so bored. With the personal tv thing its like time flying while working out.

I am in the Limerick area if anyone knows of any gym in the area like this.

    Thanks

    Castletroy Park Hotel

There are 3 TVs, showing 3 different channels. You can change them to watch whatever channel you want. Most aerobic machines have headphone jacks and a switch to listen to channel 1,2 or 3 (a bit like on a plane).

If you get bored easily, I recommend an MP3 player!

Crunch Fitness on Henry St have 5 screens and you select which audio channel on a box attached to each bike/treadmill.

Do a search and you can find their parent site, or call in for a look around. Its not a bad place, I've been going there for the last 2 years.

Pity you didnt try a few weeks ago as they had a 50%-off offer going. I think its 450 a year now.

    Thanks for the replies.

I checked out the Crunch gym and it is 395 per year. Sounds like a really nice gym. I am very tempted. I live out the Castletroy side of Limerick and am wondering if it might be too far in.

I can have a good rate at UL arena and its near my house but the gym, except for the excellent equipment, isnt that great i.e it looks out over the swimming pool and its kind of boring.

The mp3 player sounds like a good idea but I find that I get bored listening to music too.

    Could be the perfect gym....

If I lived in Limerick I'd opt for the Uni gym much better than the others and a good atmosphere. Getting bored is a problem, if you get involved and into your training as in take it more seriously you will not be as easily bored as you will be able to set goals for yourself.

Moving to Limerick in the next two weeks. Anyone reccomend a good friendly gym for body builders ? Pretty much a newbie to all this but what better way to make a start than when starting in a new town? Any info appreciated.

If you're into building muscle the gym in UL in Castletroy is WAY better than Crunch and the Castetroy Park Hotel.

They have plenty of heavy weights - more weight than anyone will ever need.

Its about 560 euro for the year for a non-student in UL - this includes the gym, 50 metre swimming pool, saunce and steam room access and al aerobic classes (Castletroy Park and Crunch have only about 20 metre pools).

They have a couple of TV's but if you're into building muscle you wont be bothered with them. Even if you on the treadmills you can still see and listen to the TV's.

Lots of body builders go there - but they dont take over or anything, always available for giving advice. Staff are ncie too, made some good friends there.

    URL is http://rhw.ul.ie/universityarena/ - take a look.

Zervi2003 - have you ever trained with anyone to stop the boredom?

I used to go on my own but soon got bored too, after a while you get to know the regulars and soon find yourself chatting and making friends. Even with staff, Ive made a good friend from the staff in UL.

    Thanks for the replies.

Well im not really going there to make friends (how on earth would you make friends in a gym anyways!?).

Its just that when I am on the treadmill I find myself watching the time all the time.

The TV thing I find I could walk/run all day and be grand.

Also, I think that the music they play in UL Arena is complete S*ite. Same stuff all the time-and no I cant afford a fancy mini disk/walk man thing (dont even have cds!).

But the reference there to taking it more seriously. I really do take it seriously.

I have been goin to the gym for 1 hour sessions 3 times a week plus swimming once a week.

I want to loose half a stone more and tone up. I do alot of cardio exercises but I cant seem to shift the last half stone.

Keep up the cardio and you WILL loose it - it really does take time - Im sure you're fed up of hearing that by now - but just keep pushing yourself and you WILL see results!

    I would do:

30 mins walking about at a pace of 4.0 (have a dodgy knee so cant walk any faster).

I dont run on the treadmill.

I then do 10 mins on the Running machine (you know the one that moves your legs for ya!) ranging from levels 1-5

Then 10 mins on a bike (usually just manual mode)

    Then a few sit-ups

    Then a few light weights

I do feel myself, better physically, but with regards loosing weight I cant seem to!

I think the older you get the harder it is to shift the weight. Or maybe its water retention or something............

How old are you and what's your weight?

If you cant manage walking faster on the treadmill then try concentrate more on the swimming.

    I am 25.

Ok Im not that old (hahahahaha!) but when I was 20/21 I could shift weight if needed no problem.

Now it looks like im going to have to spend longer in the gym and eating celery (yuck).

Well ok maybe my dietrary habits are not the best. I usually eat just 3 meals a day (no snacks or desserts) but maybe at lunch Ill have some chips with my sandwich and a fizzy drink-you know that kind of way.

No stuffing my face or anything. but its so hard to shift. Baaaa humbug

your diet sounds fine to me, Im 24 and about 70 kgs, I jog about 3 times a week and do weights three times a week, if I stop for even a week I can feel the weight piling back on - you just need to keep up the cardio - you'll loose very little weight doing weights.

Well - I just weighed myself last night and I have put on half a stone in a week apparently.

I dont know how this is possible. I have been going to the gym twice a week for about month and a half now, and swimming once a week and also watching what I eat.

Feel like exploding with anger. I dont know what to do.

Are you sure that's not muscle you put on? Muscle is also 3 times as dense as fat so it'll have more of an effect on the scales.

    Well,

I have been doing alot of walking on the treadmill and running. I do a few weights for my arms and upper body - nothing at all strenous.

I dunno if it would give me that much muscle that I would gain that much weight- or well maybe it is possible.

You know, I woke up this morning with this incredible craving for potatoes. Have no idea why.

Am sitting here now just thinking of potatoes. I wouldnt eat them for my Breakfast but I was wondering why I would have this mad craving for carbohydrates at such an early hour.
