ah,i've always wanted to go to a Pantera concert but they split. And the last time they played here i was just a wee lad and still am :)

God I still remember to this day how pissed off I was that everything was called off. I knew things weren't good in Pantera which is why I was really looking forward to seeing them. Then 9/11 happened...

The most memorable concert I have attended was probably the Haunted in Whelan's. What a show!

Perhaps Opeth in The Shelter 2001.

    1. The Mars Volta @ Witness 2003
    2(j). Iron Maiden - Dec 03
    2(j). Machine Head - June 04 (today)
    4. Therapy? w/Bruce Dickinson - May 04
    5. Mercury Rev @ Witness 02
    6. Audioslave - June 03
    7. Ash & U2 (don't laugh) @ Slane 01 (I think)
    8. Hoobastank (before they went downhill) @ Witness 02
    9. Eric Clapton - April 04
    10. Fisto - September 03

Man, 2003 was such a good year!

*EDIT* Woops - Meant to get QOTSA in there somewhere. Probably in around 7.

    1. NOFX - Leeds, 2002
    2. Guns n Roses - Leeds, 2002
    3. Pumpkins - Olympia, 2000
    4. Less Than Jake - Witnness, 2002
    5. Finch - TBMC, 2003

Pumpkins was mainly memorable because they bored the hell outta me. NOFX was just somplete chaos for about an hour. Finch were a band I'd never heard who completely blew me away. Less Than Jake was weird coz they managed to get so many people who hadnt a clue who they were to listen, twas pretty great tyhing to see :) and well, Gun n Roses was just the fad. We left after a few songs coz they came on an hour and a half last. Could feel the ground shaking about a mile away when sweet child o mine came on. Shíte band, but obviously some people were enjoying themselves :D

MINISTRY at the Temple bar music centre, waited 8 years for that.

    - The Cult in 1991, Point Depot. 1st time ever drinking in town, 5 pints of Snakebite in Bruxelles! Astbury made the show, great frontman

Ozzy in McGonagles in 91, Friday and Saturday. Mike Inez's first couple of gigs with Ozzy, plus Zakk Wylde and Randy Castillo. Up front for both. Basically the greatest hits performed plus one tune which never made it onto the No More Tears album (Party With The Animals) but rocked anyway.

Death in McGonagles on the Human tour with Paul Masvidal, Sean Reinert and Scott Carino. Got a stick and almost got stabbed afterwards.

Gang Green and Meliah Rage was cool too. The English thrash bands used to come over quite frequently to McGonagles (Xentrix, Slammer, Acid Reign and even Sabbat (once)) and were always great fun. Sacred Reich and Atrophy. D.R.I.

Metallica and Danzig, Slayer and Nuclear Assault, Suicidal Tendencies and M.O.D., Faith No More and Prong, some great gigs in the Top Hat.

RATM in the Tivoli in 93 was pretty intense and seeing the Beastie Boys there before they beacme famous again was a super, super evening.

For me though, nothing has rivalled seeing Megadeth and Sanctuary in the Olympic Ballroom in 88. It opened the door to Metal fully to me, inspired me to play bass and basically changed my life totally, so that's gotta be it. The first gig is usually the one :)

Yeah, what about the bass solo at that The Cult gig? Whoever would've seen it coming? ;)

Both the Opeth gigs, but especially the Shelter, as t'was my first time seeing them, mind-blowing!! The Ministry gig, and well, Einstürzende Neubauten @ TBMC earlier this year (obviously! ;)).

Christ , I was at all of them gigs ... most I'd even forgotten about

But my fav was my first : Thin Lizzy - Thunder and Lightning Farewell tour - April 1984 - RDS. I was 12 and my 2 older brothers brought me ..... fantastic and unforgettable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Others of note - Onslaught, Crumbsuckers and Slammer - W.A.S.P. and Zed Yago, Predator and Anthrax (when they split early), Sepultura, Kreator and 'Death' in the Top Hat. Judas Priest and Annihilator, Pantera, Anthrax in the SFX.

I used to love the english bands coming over, about one a month it seemed, and playing McGonagles. Great f*ckin days man. ;)

Lasy Years Bloodstock festival I have to say was one of the best weekends of my life. Got tickets at the last minute, didnt know what to expect. Truely great.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,655 ✭✭✭Ph3n0m

dammit, slightly too young for most of those gigs (mcgonagles, olympic ballroom) and yet old enough to appreciate them :)

most memorable gigs for me were:

massacre, devestation and someone else (immolation??) in mcgonagles
    haunted in whelans
faith no more at slane - patton singing in an amp case with a chomp bar - sheer class
megadeth/almighty in the point - my worst "metal faux pas" to date - t-shirt, jumper and leather jacket - whilst in the pit
suicidal tendencies in T.b.m.c - a first for me, hopefully not a last

and most recently Firebird - in whelans - finally a band that has persuaded me to go out and buy an album of theirs (smthing that hasnt happened in a long time)

Alice In Chains played that gig too, if I remember correctly. Met Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney after the gig. Nice lads. The Almighty played a blinder that night.

well my fav i'd have to go with
    Metallica 92 ( whereever i may roam)

I had a blast ... went crowd surfing .. got grabed by the bouncers .. and the crowd pulled out of thier evil grasp ...
and got into the snake pit by blagging my way in ... was top ...

other one was this ickle Blues bar in london ( Aint nothing but) and there was a band called "The Ian Seigal Band" ... got talking to them after .. was amazing =)

Twas Massacre, Morgoth and Immolation. The image of Rick Rozz in that mask/balaclava during Corpsegrinder is seared into my brain forever :D

Well, this is an interesting one
any of the RUSH concerts in the UK from 80's to 92, particularly 88 " Hold Your Fire Tour" , that was a superb show at wembley arena, last of 4 dates and real homecoming for a band from Canada?!...but they had/have such strong following in the UK, that after 5 years of not going there, well it was a great occasion, and the boys were as usual..different class.
others of note: Horslips./ Thin Lizzy wembley arena "live and Dangerous" 2 night special,,,great night, Ireland's 2 best ever bands.

Horslips own tour gig, Hammersmiith Odeon 79 " Man Who Built America "tour.

Jethro Tull 79 " Stormwatch " tour, 5 nights on the trot, terific show.

only decent gig Ive seen here,,was amazingly enough Tull again,,,20 years on!!,,,2 years ago at the Point, they were really top notch.

ahh well...consistancy is a rare thing in music,....unless you like THOSE bands of course!!".hahahahaha

    ,,,ciao' amigos...Baggio...........

twas indeed, met one of the bands after the gig at their tour bus - and were hassled by grumpy old man who owned shop next door - i believe he threatened us with his walking stick - quite amusing. only problem with mcgonagles was the damn low roofs - so many concussions and cuts from the pebble-dashed walls - always looked like I got the sh*t kicked out me - now if I could only find the lads who mugged me for my Anthrax t-shirt on Dawson street, then I would be happy

****, coming to think about it, that machine head gig last night was ****ing great. They blew out the PA system in the middle of davidian, so they put their own amps on the edge of the stage and thats how they played the rest of the gig (which they even extended for us, to chants of "Machine ****ing Head").

Before playing Block, they asked for the largest mosh pit in the histort of mandella hall, the ENTIRE hall backup up the walls leaving a circle about 8 metres across in the middle. They started playing, and it just filled with flailing people. I watched for 5-10 seconds, then went and flailed too :)

My neck is borked, my jaw is screwed, my kneecap is purple and I have sustained substantial soft tissue injury. Man, what a gig!

Any Witnness or Slane deely I went to paled in comparison to Iron Maiden last December. There's nothing on this earth like seeing your favourite band live from the front row.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,594 ✭✭✭Fozzy

I'd agree with Sarky there. A few years ago, I never thought I'd see the great Iron Maiden, but then Bruce came back and everything took off. Their last album is probably their best all-round one, and I was looking forward to the gig so much. Then I couldn't get a ticket and I was pissed off at that, but I managed to get one two days before the gig was on. They are such brilliant musicians and showmen, I enjoyed it more than any other gig I've been to.

    They did indeed ....

*name drop time - sorry :( * ... I got backstage at that gig .. Megadeth had ****ed off , but I ended up back at the Pink Elephant with Alice in Chains and The Almigthy for an aftershow party ... it was crap , however my claim to fame was the Alice in Chains singer asking me did I know anywhere to get some "blow" ... I said "yeah hang on man , I'll skin up" and he said "no man ..... blow ... coke .. you understand ?" ... I said "oh , eh .. no sorry , can't get that " ..

.......... and we all know how he died :dunno:

Yeah Dr J , McGonagles , SFX and the Top Hat were excellent venues for gigs .. saw so many gigs I've forgotten most of them but your posts have reminded me of a hell of a lot .....

the most memorable concert ive been to was when i saw dave matthews, tim reynolds, trey anastasio, ray paczkowski (keyboards), brady blade (drums) and tony hall (bass) play together- tour aka Dave & Friends

started off with accoustics between dave and tim- played 5 classic dmb songs
then full band came out- played some solo dm material, then the covers came:
american tune (simon and garfunkle), hey bulldog (beatles), and ending the first set with thank you~for letting me be myself again~(sly & the family stone). for the encore they played waste (phish), three little birds (bob marley-amazing!!!), and closing with: fool in the rain (zeppy baby!) coolest thing was that basically the fans sang all these songs while they played with us.
best part of the show was during 'thank you' and they all stopped playing except for the drummer who kept up the beat as we sang- dave danced across the stage for bout 10 mins- just tripping around everywhere doing his signiture 'dave dance' (its a site to see!) it was wild!

what was also so awesome about this show is that even from the third leval in the corner seats, their smiles and laughter could still be seen. they were having such an amazing time playing songs that they grew up to listening and it really showed.

oh- what a great time it was ~batch

Queens of the stone age Ambassador October 2002-an amazing gig.

Radiohead December 2003 (the Thursday gig) great show all 2+ hours of it!!

The gig i really wish I was at was Tool in the SFX in 2001 I'd say it was one of those 'I was there man' shows, if you follow me.

primordial, arcane sun and dreamsfear [with support from some geezer in a skull mask and a drummer who'd only ever played on errr... a mattress!] absolutely blew my mind. those of you who know my thoughts on music that isnt made with computers should realise how strong a statement that is.

    heh ^

erm thats a tough thread, i guess milton keynes in 2001 i think it was 2001, its all a blurr these days tbh
    lineup was

    ACDC
    Megadeath
    Queens of the stone age
    Offspring.

so as a whole gig i guess that was the best ive been to , although i could name individual performances that were better, but i guess thats usually then way :)

Ministry - Temple bar mc 2003
    Korn - London Astoria 1996
    Ministry - Elysee Montmartre 1996
    NiN - Sfx 1994
    Slayer - Sfx 1994

Thats my top 5, in that order. The Ministry gig was soooo savage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

Death on the "Perseverance Tour" 1998 in Germany - i still remember it vividly, amazing stuff.

The first time i saw Megadeth in Mannheim, Germany in 1997 - when they opened with Holy Wars i looked like a hysterical female at a Beatles gig in 1963 :D

And the first time i saw Napalm Death @ the Red Box in 2001 here in Dublin. I've heard and read different reviews about that gig, but nothing i've ever experienced matched that intensity.

Oh, and Slayer, Motorhead and Maiden - all 3 as main acts for the Metal 2000 tour.
    No comment needed there.

Haven't been to many concerts, but my fav was when I seen Mark Knopfler with Paul Brady in 2000. I didn't think it was possible to play a les paul like knopfler does. Pure genious.

I seen Clapton too this year, Excellant also.

Last Summer my friend and my dad went to Deep Purple and Lynyrd Skynyrd in the point. hearing Freebird live for about 20 minutes was incredible.

Next was Iron Maiden in the point on Dec 1st last year. From the mad crush to the straining "Im On My Way!" chorus of Wildest Dreams to the 9,000 strong sing alongs of every song that wasn't from Dance of Death!

Third was the muffin men, playing Frank Zappa songs that i seen in my local, featuring Jimmy Carl black of Zappa's band. truely funkaliscious.

Actually, the one track that sticks in my mind from the maiden gig is Paschendale. I thought that was very good.

it was something like a fiver for tickets coz he was just treatin it like a rehearsal for the stadium tour got a stick and randy signed it after

metallica in 88 on newsted's first tour were amazing, my first real gig, seen em every time since but they are so boring now, last year was like the freakin eurovision
so i will not be renewing my membership this year

met the band when they stayed in the gresham in 88 and had a wee difference of opinion with kirk h coz he wouldnt sign autographs for us beavis and butthead types, danzig on the other hand were really cool

faith no more were excellent at slane in 92

    skid row in the point

rollins band in vicar street last time

wolfsbane in the baggot inn is one of my faves too c. 1989 if my memory serves me right

seps at the top hat, kreator and death at the top hat, deicide at mcgonagles

that clash of the titans gig in the 90's would have been awesome if it hadnt been cancelled, slayer and megadeth co headlinin and testament as support all probably at their peak
