    Hey,

Ive collected warhammer 40k for a while but i gave it up a few years ago because i got bored of not having any money and all that jazz but ive been talking to my friends ( same people who dragged nosmo back) and ive decided to start collecting again and i was wondering what army i should collect.

I collected Eldar first and got bored of them then moved onto Bloody Angels and im now bored of them so im looking for something abit different.

Any advice on what army to collect is very much appreaciated!

Deciding on a new army is something that shouldn't be rushed. You want to weigh up each potentials strengths and weaknesses, and above all, what appeals to you.

Now, a lot of people tend towards Iron Warriors right from the word go, because of the number of heavy support choices they can take. Several defilers, backed up with a basilisk and some obliterators are a really nasty force, but they lend themselves too easily to accusations of cheese.

World Eaters are a lot of fun, if somewhat one dimensional. Still, the satisfaction of seeing what a full squad of berserkers can do to most units is quite appealing.

I'd advise you to pass on Thousands Sons, as they tend to be a fairly weak force, and not an easy one to play.

The plague marines of the Death Guard are very resilient, but their lack of heavy weapons can be a bit off-putting to some.

The Emperors Children are a fairly vesitile force, but not one that I field. They can lay down a lot of anti infantry fire with their sonic weapons, and deamonettes make a reasonably effective assault unit. They're best fielded in numbers though, as while they can hit hard, they are fragile.

The Alpha Legion are the only force now that can take cultists. Some people like them, some don't. I used to enjoy fielding a squad of them chained to Fenrir (my dreadnought) for those occasions when he went on a fire frenzy. Shooting your own cultists is fun.

Word Bearers aren't outstanding, but the ability to take up to 3 more troop squads can be useful on occasion.

I really like the Night Lords whole attitude, but I just couldn't field them with those batwinged helmets. Their stealth abilities are nice, but of limited battlefield use.

Lastly, Black Legion. No real outstanding special rules, but the ability to take just about everything makes them a good option for one newly sworn to the service of the ruinous powers.

If you decide against one of the main legions, there's plenty of scope for creating your own force. Thats what I've done with my Dire Wolves.

    ....

    ....

Oh, and there are some other armies too, but none that really matter beside the almighty power that is Chaos :D

I was more heading towards either Tau or Daemonhunters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,257 ✭✭✭hairyheretic

First up, which appeals to you more?

Tau have the whole manga thing going, which is at least part of the reason I like them. If you like to sit back and shoot, Tau will suit you. Their maneuverability isn't the best, though crisis suits and drones are ok.

Their weakness is hand to hand ... grots with pointy sticks get in amongst your fire warriors and they have problems. A tooled up Honour Guard or Death Company will pacman through an entire tau force.

Deamonhunters ... do you favour Grey Knights, =I=s or a mixture of both. The Grey Knights are expensive pointswise, so it will be a relatively small army. This can prove troublesome when facing the starcannon or ordnance heavy opposition. One or two good volleys and half your army is gone.

That being said, having everyone strength 5 (6?) and carrying storm bolters means they can give out a fair bit of hassle themselves.

They've got a lot of interesting rules, and the =I= side of things is great for painting and converting.

Both can be reasonably shooty, but the deamonhunters have the edge in hand to hand. They're also going to be a smaller army.

Dunno if that helps any with making your mind up.

If not .. Chaos is eternal :D

Well im looking for a nice army to paint and collect more then play so i was thinking Daemonhunters cause some of them look very nice and i like the idea of painting them well.

Im going into GW in a while so i'll have a glance through the codex and have a look.

Althought Chaos can still be an option. :p

If painting / converting is what you're primarily interested in, I'd say the Deamonhunters are probably a better bet.

You can really go all out with the fine detail on the Grey Knights, and there are plenty of conversion possibilities in the =I= side of things.

I'd say if you want a few models to spend a lot of time on, the Daemonhunters would be a good choice.

Stay away from Space Marines. I play Tyranids and Eldar and I tend to gear my army to take out the tincan bastids. Pulse Cannon, Starcannons, Banshees... Bye bye mister android monkey.

But like, I really feel GW need to take away some of the power from marines... They're noob armies. It's great fun coming up against something new.

I see very few Ork armies nowadays which is a shame as they're possibly one of the best looking armies but I've had one before... and the hand gets a bit tired...

Demon Hunters would be a funky choice.

I Absolutely despise Chaos. Every other army I come up against :dunno:

Yeah thanks lads, the hero's look very nice to paint, im gonna look at the codex first but keep the help coming.

am i the only one who kinda dislikes the way they've delved more into chaos? it oddly enough seems to be more regimented than before. Tbh one of the things i loved about Chaos was being given complete freedom (i only ever bought very few actual chaos models, the rest were normal space marines converted myself (badly, cus i was young at the time :) ))
but it all seems really set in its ways now...i miss that freedom.

Yeah, I miss the aul days of the Orks with the standard hunched pose, axe in one hand, bolt pistol in the other. The new wave of models (eg: post-Gorkamorka (great game, btw)) are delish

I think some of the orc models are cool, the poses and just general attention to detail in them is nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭nosmo

Tbh, in general, the new plastic kits are a huge leap in the right direction. Roll on the new guard kits! (Valhallans I hear the next one will be)

Them plastic Cadian Shock Troopers box sets are brilliant, got one purely to play about and convert them, and got some wierd conversions, but their really fun to make, and look super cool :)

Any pics?? Anyone else aswell with some nice pics of their models post them up. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

No digi cam, wouldnt be worth taking a pic of them now anyway really, we got them for our 5 year old brother to paint, he wanted a squad of his own and he wasnt able to stick them together, so we had fun doing it for him :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,084 ✭✭✭n1ck

Ah well if anyone else has some nice conversions or just generally nicely painted models post up some pics. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭nosmo

I've got a few nice conversions, mostly for Necromunda, and a couple to make a command section from the Catachans box. I'll see if I ever remember to put pics online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭Kold

The only things i hate about Orks is that they've still got the crappy buggy and bikes from long ago. Gorkamorka completely revolutionised them though. OH and CLANS! I miss those.. Blood Axe Kommandos were elite

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

Apart from the bikes and buggy's tho, the ork vehicles look brilliant, look at the Wartrack's etc, their the mutt's nut's :)

Talk to someone workin in the store. They usually have in experience in most, if not all, of the 40k armies.

Consider the new witch-hunters. They have some nice models.

If you want a challenge, and to be different, take a look at necrons, and perhaps consider a bright ceramic colour. Some of the pics in the codex are cool.

But, you could, of course, do this with any army. A different approach is often more fun.

I was thinking of necrons but one of my friends in school already collects them so i want to do something different to them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

Nuttin worse than necrons v necrons. Slow and dull, the game is.
    But the nightbringer........if used properly..........

Tyranids can test both your painting skills AND your patience.....

PLEASE do not paint Necrons in ceramic colours. It just looks really stupid, it'd be like painting a Bloodthirster yellow

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 87 ✭✭stevanavich

there are things worse than bright necrons...

bright pink, white and yellow dark eldar. apparently the word "dark" has no meaning to these people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

ah but dark is a bit of misnomer. its like saying that all chaos have to be black. Just look at the slaaneshi guys who's names i cant remember (used have a squad of em...so fun to paint :D )

They're the Emperors children, and my god do they look gay. There faces are bright pink!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭Kold

Emperor's Children are pure funk. Painted properly they look absolutely class as in, we may look gay but you're the one getting raped up the arse.

On a related note, two years ago at Warpcon a guy had a very nice Slaaneshi army. Completely pink, and really quite disturbing conversions. For example, there was the Rhino powered by a marine ass-raping a guardsman, and the heavy weapon marine whose plasma cannon was actually his mutated, oversized schlong.

The Games Workshop rep there thought it was fantastic. It certainly WAS in perfect character...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,257 ✭✭✭hairyheretic

They had it at GaelCon a couple of years ago too .. I remember seeing it.

I thought it was very in character too .. and I believe the oversized appendage was actually the icon for summoning the deamonettes.

    How... Appropriate... :)
