    Hi all,

    I have registered on paypal.com

I have received money on my paypal account.

It looks like there's no way for me, as an Irish resisdent, to withdraw the money.

Can anyone confirm or give me further information on this please ?

    Thanks

Unfortuantely Irish residents can't withdraw to a bank account. Paypal have sais that it would be available to Irish customers in early 2004 but there's still no word on it. In future I would suggest you use moneybookers.com instead as you can withdraw to an Irish bank account with them.

Hi you sould try and use www.ikobo.ie they send you a atm card to withdraw money with.

I was using ebay and thought paypal would be a good solution.

    Cheers

Hmm! That's very handy, wonder what their merchant rates are like.
The thing is with services like ikobo is that you have no recompense from ebay if you're ripped off, like you do if you use paypal. Also, paypal is the biggest online money transfer service so people will probably be reluctant to use another service.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 larsson

OK, let's take this point by point. Ikobo's merchant rates are 2.99% + 30 cents per transaction with the possibility of dividing this fee between you and the customer. I don't think there are other types of fees, like monthly fees or something like that.
They provide charge back protection, as well as having strong fraud protection system, so the risk of you getting ripped off is minimal. Hasn't happened to me yet.
I can understand how people wouldn’t jump in and sign-up with a somewhat unknown company, that's what I thought in the beginning, but after doing some research, and learning some pretty bad stuff regarding paypal, I decided to go with ikobo. So far there are no regrets.

so is ikobo a better way of sending money
    than westernUnion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,544 ✭✭✭Pataman

Hey guys. I am new to paypal(yesterday). Ok purchasing is straight forward enough, they debit your cc. What about selling, I dont want virtual money(or virtual anything for that matter, the REAL thing only please;) ), do they not credit my cc account if I sell something. Daveg great value in scuba gear there, as you know.

YES. Ikobo seems handy enough, only thing is you have to wait for a visa debit card to arrive once you've received money.
I have signed up to it, but given Paypal's stranglehold on ebay, I doubt i'll ever get buyers using it.

Pataman - no, you cannot withdraw the money in your paypal account onto a credit card. Only a current account, and currently you can't do this in Ireland, so if you know anyone in the North maybe go up and open a current account, once you have your atm card for it you're flying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40 Easy-C

so you get charged on this atm transaction too?
I have used westernUnion but ikobo seems to be a much handier way of doing things, and cheaper too

Yep, you get charged... but in the position of the recipient that's the only fee you have to pay, it's $1.50 per withdrawal, the first one being free. I doesn't seem like much to me, especially compared with what I had to pay when using WU.
The visa card is quite useful as well and you don't have to wait so long for it, I only waited 5 or so days, after that transfers were almost instant.

    HEY GUYS

having been tormented for a long time about not being able to withdraw money to an Irish bank account, I was pleased to see this on Paypals site regarding policy changes:

    "Bank Account Withdrawal for Ireland

    Notice Date: July 1, 2004
    Effective Date: August 6, 2004
Beginning August 6, 2004, PayPal will enable members in Ireland to withdraw funds from their PayPal account to a local bank account. "

    NOW, WHADYA THINK OF THAT!!!!

    :D:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 larsson

Hmmm, it does sound good indeed for Irish paypal account owners who haven't been ripped off yet. Let's just hope it actually works the way it should. You can't be too sure with anything with paypal.

Hi. I am new here and I am see that you are talking about PayPal. I think that PayPal maybe a good solution for US people altough theirf fee are high in my opinion. I have a question. Do you know any good payment provider with coverage over Eastern Europe. I want to build a website with e-comerce functions and I need a good merchant account. Thanks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 larsson

Well, Alan25r, first of all welcome here. Now for your question, there are several payment services that cover Eastern Europe, like 2checkout, worldpay, moneybookers and others. Right now I use ikobo and it's enough for now. Good fees and fast transfer. They provide merchant account services as well, if you wish I can give you some more details on their services since I'm somewhat familiar with them. There are several details listed in this thread as well. Let me know if there's something else you wish to know!

Thank you for your welcome. I am very interested in signing up with iKobo. Can you answer a couple of questions regarding this payment service ? It will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

I already said I'd answer them, so just post them already and I'll see what I can do to help.

Ok. Tell me how can someone reload his ikobo's iKard ? Ca I send money directly from the iKard to someone else ?

You cannot add funds to your own ikobo account. Someone has to send you money via ikobo in order for you to have funds added to your account.
Ca I send money directly from the ikard to someone else ?
Yes you can; but from your account and by using a credit card.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15 Alan25r

yes. thanks. but how secure is after all ikobo.com ? can we trust our transactions with them ?

Is this some kind of weird infomercial for ikobo...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 944 ✭✭✭nahdoic

    My thoughts exactly BuffyBot.

2 new members who only post about ikobo and who sound like they are from a very badly done late night infomercial on tv3.

The scary thing is, i'm not seeing any affiliate links, could this be the entire promotion strategy of ikobo?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 larsson

You're not seeing any affiliate links because I'm not affiliated with them in any way. I only use their services and thought I'd share my experience as well as help anyone who needs help. I guess that's what you get for trying to be a nice guy these days.
Anyway, for Alan25r's question, I'd say it's secure enough, at least I didn't have any problems yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

    PayPal is the best...

yeah we can't withdraw to the Bank account yet, but hopefully it will be somewhere by the end of 2004.

PayPal is getting bigger... and better, and its based in Ireland...

I can't wait to be able to withdraw funds to my bank account.....but best things come to those who wait.

And because we are regulated by the FSA in England the guidelines that have to be followed....

    PayPal is safe and secure....

Do I have to add my credit card or bank account in order to use iKobo and what credit cards can I use with iKobo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

And because we are regulated by the FSA in England the guidelines that have to be followed....

Ireland has it's own Financial Services regulatory body, IFSRA

I just want some information. If you don't know then just please ignore my postings. But, if you know something about ikobo and you can help me then please just answer me. I don't understand why people react this way to simple questions about some payment service. If I would have posted about moneybookers or worldpay I would have been received the same tratment ?!? Just wondering ... :dunno:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

    Yes, you probably would have.

There is a handy private message function you know...

I'm going to ignore what's been said here and just answer your questions; yes you do have to add either a credit card or bank account. The cards accepted are Visa and MasterCard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

Oh yeah, I know about PayPal sucks.com

bunch of crap to be honest. I could set up a site, like AIBsucks.com or BOIsucks.com, if I wanted to complain about their service.

Im my opinion that site, paypalsucks.com, was set up by people who made stupid mistakes on the net using the PayPal platform and decide to blame the platform...

    Its quite a funny site...

Ireland do have IFSRA yes, but id say the FSA in the UK are better, and more well known, Im not sure about that..

To be honest, there are some good alternatives out there to PayPal, because they offer the ability to withdraw to a bank account, but hopefully by the end of 2004 we will have bank capability in Ireland.

But being owned by Ebay, PayPal is probably the best...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15 Alan25r

You are probably right. For USA people is much easier to use paypal. But what about the people from Europe and from other countries. I think they have more options. Not much but enough to study them and have an idea about each one of them. I am from E. Europe and I think I am going to use iKobo because I have no problems with them. I must add that I use them for a pretty long time now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,544 ✭✭✭Pataman

Am I the only person who cant get paypal to work. I have tried unsuccessfully to 3 different people and each time it wont work. Spent 14 mins onto the states the other day only to be told its a computer security decision which they cant override. Each time I get this transaction cannot be fundede by your credit card. I have tried both of my visa cards and it says the same thing both times. I have been verified.

Anyone else get this and how did you solve it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

Have you tried ringing the UK help number, which the help support is based here in Dublin.....

its a visa issue and not a paypal thing... id ring paypal UK during the day, you get through to the Irish call centre and they will give u a better answer...

Call +448707 307 191, its a UK call save number.

Call during the day cos you get through to ireland....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,544 ✭✭✭Pataman

Well, considering you are in Ireland, the FSA won't give a sh1t if you're ripped off.
There was some furore recently about how paypal are registered with the FSA, apparently not registered so they can do credit card chargebacks in the event of fraud or something?

As for paypalsucks, I think it *is* just people who were unlucky and got ripped off - can't expect paypal to bail you out for your own stupid mistakes! I've been buying and selling using paypal for 2 years now and i've transferred £1000's without any problems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 larsson

I admit most of the postings on paypalsucks are from people unable to understand how the system works, or who haven't been careful enough with their accounts. Still, some of the experiences there are from people who apparently just got ripped off. The account freezing is a big issue with paypal as well as the lack of customer support.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15 Alan25r

All I know is that lately there has been a big number of frauds on paypal so in my opinion they don't have a great antifraud system. Anything else ?

"The account freezing is a big issue with paypal as well as the lack of customer support."

People who post on PayPal sucks are cretins...they actually answer spoof emails and give over financial information and then wonder why their accounts are limited.

Limited accounts are their to protect members and PayPal...They are not just put on willy nilly, usually they are there to stop the real gangsters causing harm to members..

And as far as I know, the customer service is very good....they are only a phone call away.... how do I know? ;)

And I agree with Eth0, I have also used PayPal for years and never had a problem, never had a problem either buying or selling....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 larsson

:D yeah, most of them are... but you have to admit some of those problems could have been averted if paypal enforced tighter security. This is my opinion...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

Sure things do slip through the system. Not every financial system in the world is 100% flawless, so granted you are going to get a few pissed off people in the world who think they have lost out....

45 million users, course there are going to be problems, but its still the biggest online payments system in the world and owned by Ebay....

But hey, everyone has their opinion, good or bad, so cool...I have never had any trouble.....

    Touch wood...

    ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15 Alan25r

You are right when you say that many people use paypal. But, also many people know **** about other payment systems like moneybookers or ikobo or another two or three services. Those services REALLY have better offers, lower charges and much much higher coverage. In my country people are starting to use ikobo and oneybookers because they simply like them and these two services have coverage over a big part of Europe. Paypal doesn't. And there are other reasons for selecting other payment providers and not paypal but I won't list them right now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 larsson

Well, I agree with both Jokah as well as with Alan. It's true a lot of people use paypal, but most of them from the US or from Canada. For Europe there are other alternatives such as the ones listed by Alan which first of all work in European countries and second, they may actually be better choices than paypal.
    That's how I see things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

I agree that PayPal really isnt user friendly in Europe, especially Germany, cos they don't use Credit Cards there....well most of them dont...

PayPal yes is not friendly for Irish sellers at the moment, but that is going to change(bank account usage), very soon i believe...;)

Lets see what happens in the "battle of the payment systems"..

As Kent Brockman would say, "Only time will tell".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 larsson

I know paypal is supposed to open up for Ireland, but I wouldn't trust them so much. I think it's going to take a little (lot) more time before they actually do it. Then again, I may be wrong.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 528 ✭✭✭kirn

just a quick question, i've never used paypal but i've just signed up.
i'm bidding on an item, and lets say i win the auction. (lovely Boss pedal.. mmnnnn..)

does paypal AUTOMATICALLY take money from my visa card to pay the seller if i win?
or do i have to set up sending money to the user?

    thanks, k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Jokah

PayPal is user initiated, and you do all the sending of money....When you press the send button you give permission to PayPal to debit your card...

PayPal is a platform which allows you to transfer the money.

TO set up your Ebay link within PayPal.....

Go to your account, go to The PROFILE tab in your account...Under Selling Preferences click on auctions...

In auctions you will be able to add your Ebay User ID and password...add it accurately...PayPal will then recognise Your Ebay ID and Password

When you log into your paypal account after winning any auction you will see on the main page "recent activity" and a link for Ebay(with the Ebay logo beside it) called "items won"....

Click on the items won link and you will see any auctions you need to pay for....But be sure to set up your Ebay/Password as described above within your PayPal account.

Because Ebay owns PayPal they have to be integrated in some way....

    Hope this helps..
