    Hey,

Not tried these in a long long time. One thing I remember about them is that I suck :)

Is there any other sort of exercise that works the same muscles that I could do for a few weeks so I have some tolerance for chin ups ?

A typical gym should have a lateral pull down machine. You could start with using that machine for whatever variation of chin ups you want to do and gradually build up the strength over time. Don't be too ashamed if you can't do chin ups, not many people can, especially if they have been doing no upper body strength exercise.

Well I'm not exactly a beast or anything but I'm quite comfortable on things such as chest / shoulder press. I usually use hte machines for those (free weights room gets too busy at times) and would lift between 50 - 60kg. I'm 12 stone... just cant do the oul chin ups heh.

What about using an assisted chin ups machine? They can usually be used for tricep dips too.

I found a method called ladders really helped me to get my chin-ups going!

You can do these by yourself of even better with a partner. If your by yourself your recovery time between each set of chins is the time it would take your partner to do his set.

The method is that you do one, your partner does one, you do two and your partner does two..etc..etc..
This keeps on going till you or your partner cant do anymore. this is one set! Rest and repeat for as many sets as possible

worked for me so i thought id throw it out there!

should chin-ups be done as a warm up exercise or a cool down exercise after doing weights? Or does it matter!??

Chin ups are neither a warm up or cool down exercise! They are intended as a training exercise only. Now you can do warm up and cool down sets of them by reducing the amount of reps. But this is just ment to be inbetween a propper traing set of them. But remember because you are raising your arms above your head in increases intensecity(sp) by 40%.

Anyone do weighted chins? I have noticed good development in my lats and other related muscles (teres major?) from doing them. I think once you do around 8-10 chin ups in a set, it's time to start adding weight as like any exercise, doing high reps doesn't do a whole lot for strength or size.

PS my definition of a chin up is the palms faced away from you variety. I refer to the palms faced toward you as pull ups. Although I have heard lots of people using the opposite meaning or using the terms interchangably

You don't need to add weight at all. Do them slower. See how you get on then. Chip ups are a Multi joint exercise there main effect is on the Latissimus Dorsi and Teres Major. You should also see(feel) a secondary effect on your Upper back and Posterior Deltiod.

Sorry damnyanks only noticed this part of your question now! Your gym should have a Pulldown machine.
Another exercise that works the same group of muscles is the "Pull Down to Neck". Get on of the instructors to show you how to do it because it's a very easy one to get wrong. I see too many "experienced" gym buffs doing that one wrong.

    Hope this helps.
