Anyone getting X800 ?

I'm thinking of biting the bullet and getting a X800 Pro...

I had a look around, and overclockers.co.uk have a Sapphire X800 Pro with 256 MB of RAM for 296 quid (preorder).. So about 450 euro or thereabouts.

On ebay, there's a few X800's listed, $400-500 for a 256MB X800 Pro, various brands. Most of them say they'll ship when they receive the stock, and some mention shipping on the 17th of May, which is pretty close.

Anyone thinking of doing the same?
    Where are you getting yours?

I'd be interested in finding out if there are any better deals...
The States seem to be quite a bit cheaper.

Are you getting a Radeon X800 (or Pro/XT) 43 votes

Damn right, I'm getting mine now!

I'll probably wait till all the overclocking options are more available :)

happy with my 9800pro atm might upgrade when doom3 and HL2 come out though

Probably the wisest decision, the current (pre-X800) top of the range versions of ATIs and GeForces will perform more than adequately with todays gaming demands.

When hl2 and Doom 3 finally arrive they'll be better versions of both cards about, maybe even next generation versions of them . .:dunno:

    TEON.

The prices won't change so waiting for Doom3 and half life 2 won't make a difference. Doom 3 is due during the summer. HL2 is around October supposedly. Just over a year delayed. Nice one Valve.

You can get the x800pro on Jes for 400 euro. When the xt's come out they will be about 500 euro and the pro's will stay at 400-450. The pro version overclocks to and past the level of the xt's anyway.

I think I'll wait a little longer anyway to see how the war between Nvidia and ati pans out. My 9800xt should keep me going for a while anyway.

I might wait to see what the softmodding options are, kinda SE > Pro or Pro > XT.

Other than that, I have an LCD monitor that has a native resolution of 1600x1200 and none of today's graphics cards can push a decent frame rate at that res.

Plus the fact that I'm a geek and just have to have the latest toys :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Jesus netman that lcd must have cost you a fortune. My 9800xt plays most games at 1600x1200 with no trouble with the odd exception, far cry , BFvietnam, halo.

The x800pro won't have any trouble with these though. Supposedly soft modding the pro to get the extra 4 pipelines will be out of the question. There might be a hardmodding possibility though we will just have to wait and see.

no way am i spending 400 quid on a graphics card. I'll just pick up a cheap 9800 pro/xt over the summer instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,553 ✭✭✭✭Dempsey

You'll pay through the nose because its the lastest and greatest but you'll wont notice a huge difference if yer going from a 9800Pro or whatever.

From what i just read it sucker punches the 6800 Ultra in the power consumption, cooling and the price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Slutmonkey57b

Another good article up at HardOCP on Nvidia's "Whoops" brand of PR management - seems they've "revised" the 6800's power consumption down to 350w. I wonder why that is. Worth a read, anyway. Caught on the Hop again

I be waiting to see the X800xt appear. I have read the x800 pro is a good overclocker and the the xt version is not. However I don't intend on using a stock cooler for whatever card I get so if the cooler I get for them puts the x800xt alittle bit ahead of an overclocked x800 pro I will go for it.

Asides from wasting my money on such trival things I have heard rumors that there is a strong possibility of half life 2 been delayed till next year.

Funny you should mention Halo Bloodbath, the group down in Pyrogenxs flats have various cards and none run it well like a 9600, 9000 etc and I have seen poor performace on 9800 (well relatively speaking). But old machine with its 3D Blaster Mx 460 after a driver update ran it full spec on 1024x768 and about 35 frames and never once did it slow down.

Having said that Ati 9800 pro is about 200 euro now and its truely a value card. For have the performace of newer cards its where it should be. Far better values than 9800xt. Its still a great card and seening that you could buy 2 high systems machines with that compared to the single machine I got that well almost at the leading edge.

What graphic card do you have at the moment?

The 9800 Pro (flashed to XT, sometimes O/Ced to 430/385) plays perfectly well at 1600x1200. UT 2004 certainly does, even without an O/C I'd get average fps of 53, with the O/C at about 60 on a really large onslaught level with pleanty of action. Not much of a difference. I always wonder can you (one) notice the difference with higher frame rates? (might try it at a lower res to see...)

Wouldn't buy an LCD with a lower res than what you have. What is it btw? :)

    <edit>
Just ran the new benchmarking utility with UT2004 at 1600x1200:
    Flyby: 156fps
    Botmatch: 101fps
    <edit>

I have the same card as Adeptus, 9800Pro/XT and I can play Painkiller and TOCA 2 at 1600x1200 no problem.

As for Gen-6 cards, I'm waiting for nVidia to release finished drivers for the 6800 before I decide. There's no telling what gains they'll make with efficient drivers, and I'd hate to make a rash decision now, especially when there's no rush.

I have a Radeon 9700 Pro, and I mostly play Halo.. The highest smoothly playable resolution is 1154x864.. I have it now on 1280x1024 as it looks better with interpolation, but I had to lower all the settings and I definitely see it slowing down when there's lots of explosions etc.

I got a Dell 2001FP (20.1" 16ms LCD) and it just looks spectacular. Interpolation works pretty well at some resolutions, but I'd prefer to be running the native res all the time. Didn't think it would be possible until I saw the reviews of the cards that are coming up, and now I'm thinking - why not... I mean the upgrade can cost me up to 200 euro.

I'm just not sure what/when/where, but by the looks of things it's going to be something like x800pro/within 1-2 months/jes computer :)

I know, komplett used to be really good with the prices, and now they've fallen far behind the competition. Who knows, might even get it from elara here in Ireland :)

Aye i'm raging I bought a 9800xt. It overclocks a lot higher than the pro does but I'm gonna sell it soon to get one of the new cards and lose about 200 euro on the sale. I should have got a 9800pro and saved 200 then when I got the new card I could have put the 9800pro in my second machine which is only using a geforce2 mx 32mb.

It's a decent machine otherwise. I just didn't know about the next gen cards when I bought my machine otherwise I would have held out.

The pro and the xt x800 are identical except there is 4 pipelines on the pro are locked which means they overclock to about the same level. The memory on the pro's goes up 100-150 = 200-300mhz. Thats a huge gain. Similar results with the core. Thats with stock cooling as well.

Aye make me an offer. It's only 3 months old and comes boxed with all cables and a copy of Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness.

I was just about to place a Jes order next week for a few parts including an artic vga silencer and some artic silver for it so it will be uber overclockable. Looking at over 500 core.

I'm gonna hold out about a month before selling it though.

Bloodbath when your odering your vga cooler and some paste stuff I probably get you to order me the same. Will cover half your shipping cost as long as your not important a tank :)

You still getting that vapor chill case?

    Azza

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

No problem Dempsey. I'll let ya know anyway.

Ya azza it will be next week or the week after. I have the order placed but I can just re-place it. Nothing heavy. Just the cooler, some as5, a 92mm tornado and a few cables.

What do you want? Just the cooler and as5? Whats the cooler for, I thought you got rid of your xt?

I dunno about the vapo. If it's still knocking about in a months time when I have the money I will consider buying it. I might leave it though. 450 quid for an extra 500mhz doesn't sound too apealing any more.

Yeah just the as5 and the cooler for my graphics card, Still have old one but I won't be using it on it...its for the X800 pro/xt. I assume it will fit it.

whats the point a new will replace it in a few weeks i think you should only get one if new graphically demanding games come out like doom 3 pump your money into RAM instead

TBH I wouldn't assume it would fit. The size/positioning could be different. Maybe have a google about to be sure.

After watching Under Seige 2 the other night I keep thinking of that line "Assumption is the mother of all **** ups". Think I'll be using that with customers in future! ;)

There is no fun in life unless you make widly almost certainly false assumptions. The Wilder the better. Everything else is just pointless and unneeded common sense!

funny how your comparing the x800 pro "lite" version to the powercolor with gamebag + hitman contracts included..

i got mine from komplett, 441, the exact same card on jes is 420, atleast do a fair comparison next time eh?

plus i dont have to go down to bank, get a wire transfer, send, wait 5 days to clear, wait another god knows how many days till its delivered (and if i get any problems looking at other thread i wont get much help from JES..) etc...

all that in my opinion warrants me to spend that extra 20 euros and save myself alot of time and hassle

Wow.. Didn't know all that.. Thanks for the info Big Chief :)

I thought you could just pay them with your credit card and get your stuff in a few days, just like Komplett..

To be honest, I'd gladly pay 20 euro more for the difference in service. :p

and paypal takes a nice chunk extra (is it 7%?). So you lose all savings you get from jes having cheaper prices if you pay using paypal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,569 ✭✭✭maxheadroom

    Its 3.5% actually.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭neokenzo

So you have to pay 3.5% more to Jes when you pay through paypal?

I'm pretty sure Jes would say you pay 3.5% to paypal when you pay with them, but in the end, you're paying 3.5% extra ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

    Yeah paypal sucks teh balls.

I was gonna use it for a 1500 euro order until I saw the 3.5%. Thanks but no thanks. I didn't mind waiting an extra week anyway as I saved about 200 euro on my order.

If you want something fast Komplett is the way to go, well if you use DHL anyway.

Noticed something on Jes's site the other day - if you send them a scan of the transfer form they'll process your order straight away and not wait for it to clear. Dunno if that's only for germans, but I'll be giving it a try when I place my next order (gonna get me one of these)

Found it - its in the faq. Here's a machine translation courtesy of altavista:
What can I do, in order to keep my order as fast as possible?
During payment by vorkasse we can release your order normally only to the dispatch if our bookkeeping confirmed the entrance of the payment. As special service we offer in the meantime in addition, the possibility to you of sending us a copy of your transfer confirmation on electronic way (either as fax at 07191/32 26 288 or as email to shop@jes computer.de). You may us screen SHOT of the transfer confirmation of your on-line Banking of program gladly also send of course. All the same on which way you us the confirmation to come leave: For us it is important that we can recognize on it the outlet of the payment.

[stupid excuse]Because I won't need a reformat to install it[/stupid excuse] and my ti4200 is showing it's age. The power isn't an issue for me, nor is it even if it requires two molex connector's and I like raw power with potential whereas I don't see that potential with ati based on what they've released already polished and finished.

I prefer the features and I think it has more lastability in the long run. Given that the benchmarks have been run on beta drivers, I don't think it reflects what we're going to be seeing in terms of real world performance, when it ships.
Nvidia are writing drivers for a completely new architecture so they're in a far earlier stage with their product than ati is whereas their performance has been set in stone for ati, this is definitely not the case with nvidia but it's all open to debate and interpretation or flaming.

I read enough reviews, silly flames from the fan boys on both sides but the best one I read stated something like this "The X800XT is a polished ruby whereas the 6800 is a rough diamond that could become a 16carat or 24carat polished diamond when the work is done." About summed up my opinions on it and made me click and cough up the extra bit of dosh for the 6800 when taking into account the feature set. Just decided I like nvidia, they've always been good for me, they made a big booboo this time last year with their FX range (aka the dustbuster/hoover) and I'm more hopeful than anything they will not make the same mistake twice.

Furthermore they made the innovations and forced ati to compete this time around, not vice versa and it only leaves the floor open for nvidia to steal the spotlight again in the very near future. Already the rumours are out about the ultra extreme edition and considering the clock speeds on the ultra compared to the X800XT I think nvidia will pull ahead, they have more room to play with their hardware whereas ati do not.

Summary -- I don't care which card I have as they're both monsters and one or the other will keep me plenty happy but I'm going to stick with nvidia on this one and give them my hard earned cash as I have done in the past. I'm looking forward to replacing stock cooling and seeing what it can do also should that need arise down the road. On the X800XT I know that difference will be minimal as the hardware has been pushed nearer to it's limit when compared to the 6800.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

I read that summary as well Tact and I completely agree with you. It's going to take Nvidia some time to fully optimise the cards drivers.

Which manufacturer did you go with. The Asus ones are so sexeh.
