Food to eat before weights workout

    Hi folks,

Last week I started a new weights program with 3 trisets and 3 supersets (2 reps of each set). The last few reps of each exercise are forced, and the weight is about 75-80% of max. I'm enjoying the program, but about half to three-quarters way though the work out, I'm seriously fatigued and low on energy.

Whats the best thing to eat/drink before a hard weights workout? Should you eat in the hour or two before the workout? Would energy drinks help?

    Note - the program is non-negotiable. :)
    I just need more energy....

    Any tips would be appreciated...

    - Dave.

It's a tough one to judge.

Too much food before your workout and you'll feel sluggish and tired.

Too little and you'll feel hungry while training, just a bad.

Try some complex carbs about an hour or so before you go to the gym. I usually have a bagel and cream cheese or a couple of slices of toast befire I leave work. It's enough to get me through my workout without feeling full. Some people swear by fruit (bananas etc).

Your Supersets consist of 2 reps in each set? Are you training for pure strength?

Each set on a supersetted exercise should be done to failure but uless you're power training supersetting will very rarely consist of a 2rep set unless it's the last one.

And you're trisetting aswell? Every workout?

Trisetting, dropsets, supersets are all muscle shocking techniques. Done every session or a combination of any every session for muscle group WILL cause over training.

As for the question asked have some complex carbs 45-60 mins before the session and if you're fatiguing during the session bring in an energy drink and only sip it all the way through the session. I use powerade sometimes, has about 33% more energy than gatorade for the same volume IIRC.

If you're still fatiguing maybe you need to look at your diet and rest patterns in your lifestyle as a whole. Do you also fatigue easily outside of the gym, is your diet balanced, do you get enough rest.

Sorry Logic, I explained it badly in my original post. When I meant 2 reps, I meant of the entire set. 3 exercises back to back, break for 2 minutes, then the same 3 exercises. Each exercise is to failure or 12 (whichever comes first).

I'm doing this program twice a week, with a total rest day after each. The other days are cardio.

I'll give the complex carb/powerade thing a go... I'll let you know how I get on.
