the whole aim of the class is to tone your muscles. What you should notice in a few weeks is that your muscles have become more pronounced as the fatty tissue around them becomes less and less. However it will not build up your muscles to any great size because the routine is too rapid and involves lighter weights.

If you wished to build up muscle mass stop this class and work on lifting heavier weights (but weights you are capable of lifting using the proper techniques). To build your self up you should do exercises such as 3 sets of 10/12 reps and expect not to finish the final set (the weights should be heavy enough to make you only get to about 7 on your final set) This rips the muscle allowing for blood to rush to area and increase the muscle size for the next time around in order to cope with the heavier weight.

This whole "It tones the muscle" is both erroneous and annoying.

I'm a member in westwood now with about 2 years and yes the body pump class is alright if you're looking to loose weight and have some anti-catabolic counter balance. It's better than simply throwing yourself at spinning classes because done properly it may preserve 99% of your current muscle mass while trimming off the fat.

To call it "toneing the muscle" is an overstatement, it infact has very little action on muscle tissue at all, it simply gives you a leaner body thus displaying the muscle you already possess much better.

And as stated you will not build any sort of appreciable muscle mass in these classes. Maybe a good idea is to do two body pumpd and two weight sessions a week, or one body pump and two weights sessions or vice-versa.

Hey there, sorry to re-hash an old topic, but I'm curious. I'm thinking of taking up a spinning class at the gym... do they have a reputation for being not very good? I just bring it up because of the "throwing yourself" comment - I don't want to sign up for a class if there's a chance I'll injure myself, or if it's not very good in the first place! Any advice? Cheers :)

As an aside, I've passed a couple of Body Pump classes when they were in full swing... they seem a bit intense. I don't know if I could manage the weights.... and yes I am a big silly girlie weakling, and I don't want to mortify myself by struggling with a 5kg weight! Are there different weights scattered around the room?

Right, signing off before I ask any more silly questions ;)

Don't worry they have loads of different weights!! The thing i've found about ANY class in the gym is that there's always somebody worse than you so you don't have worry about being a weakling etc!! Spinning is really good - just make sure you go to a few beginners classes before you jump in to the really intense classes and make sure you're adding resistance too - i used to tip the nob and add hardly anything on and it go me nowhere..once I was doing full turns and pushing myself i go way better and was even able to take part in the sponsored spin earlier on in the year AND i could walk the next day!! :D

Hey tk123, thanks for that. Reckon I'll give Body Pump a lash; I tried a Spinning class (for beginners!) and enjoyed it a great deal. The instructor was really good and spent ages telling us about the resistance/brakes, etc. Got a fantastic workout. Is the seat supposed to hurt though?! I'm used to nice spongy seats on bikes. OW!

Hi, I am thinking of starting BodyPump next week. Does anyone else have any advise to offer or anyone that does the class have anything to share?
