Finalising details, so everything below is subject to change, but this is roughly the deal.
Should have the venue booked by Mon/Tue next week, my lack of proximity to Galway at the moment is a bit of an obstacle to dropping the form into the Buildings Office in NUIG.
    But I digress.
    • Dates: 2nd, Saturday 3rd, Sunday 4th July 2004
    • Times: 9am to 11pm each day.
The times are accurate. If everything goes to plan you will be able to come in at 9am Friday morning and get gaming as soon as your PC is plugged in.
No faffing about waiting for me to lay out tables. Myself and Asok will have that done
Thursday evening, along with the actual network and power.
    • Venue: Aula Maxima (Lower), The Quad, NUIG, Galway.
    • Network: ~64+ 100Mbit Full-duplex switched ports over 3-4 managed Layer2 switches, 2-4port aggregated links(800Mbit).
We'll be upgrading to GigE backbone soon enough. 3 servers, 1 for IRC/TeamSpeak/Intranet webserver, 1 Dual 2Ghz box for the heftier game servers, 1 P3 Xeon733 for some of the lighter game servers - all running Debian plus whatever boxen ye want to bring along yourselves (just tell me in advance so I can arrange network and power for them - VNC/SSH/remote access is reccommended).
We will have an FTP server running for easy fast access to a plethora of game/OS patches, mods and updates.
I also hope to have an auto-hostname assignment system running by then. This would require you sending me your network card's MAC address and you'll be able to plug into the network and you're machine will be assigned your nick as it's host/domain name.
There will also be a WAP running for those of you who have wireless cards in your laptops and want to be able to game out in the sun. It's a 11b wap, but due to a firmware upgrade it says it supports 11g draft spec. I'm unsure as to whether this will work flawlessly with every chipset, but US Robotics cards should be fine :)
Again, pre-registration of you card's MAC address is neccessary for security.
    • Net Access: Very much TBC, but we're looking at a 10Mbit LAN connection. Only SSH, FTP, HTTP and IRC will be open and it will be heavily monitored. You can pretty much download as many mods and patches as you like over HTTP/FTP<?> (whilst adhering to the guidlines of the NUIG Computer Services AUP :)) but P2P filesharing will not be allowed or indeed possible.
This niceity hasn't been finalised yet, but will probably happen :)
    • Games: BF42/DC/Nam, Quake3, QW, Counterstrike, Far Cry, UT2004, Painkiller etc. plus whatever you want to play (OpFlash Co-Op).
I will run an AvP1 session at some stage for those interested.
    • Competitions/Prizes: TBA, but Q3/QW Duels, 8-6 player BF:V tourny, 5-6player CS tourny and maybe a console tourny or 2 is what I have in mind. Prizes are pending sponsorship.
    • Security: This is not an all-night LAN , it's spread over 3 days due to college security policy.
This has two advantages: a) we can go for a pint afterwards and get some sleep and b) your valuable kit is under lock, key and the watchful eye of security men overnight.
    • Food & Accomodation: I'll be posting a list of places where you can get some kip and grub at a later stage. For the students and those "currently browsing the job market" I'll have a whip round and see who has a couch or a bed for ye :)
    • Rental PC: Don't have an PCs, *might* be able to scrape some monitors together. Don't hold your breadth though :)
    • Price: Always the bottom line ;) The damage will be between €30-35 with the usual €5 "pay on day" charge.

    More on Room101.org, including sign-up.

When everything's finalised and secured I'll post a new thread here, LAN Parties forum and on Room101.org.

    :)

Fobia - if you played in the labs in the evenings instead of in your father's office you'd know which ports are normally open :)

It's a LAN, I don't particularly want people playing games online. If the net access comes to be, it will be for downloading fixes and driverd when people's machines go tits up :)

    At least he gets holidays....

I'll probably run another LAN towards the end of August, pending me not having to repeat any exams.

    Wow.

Galway lan sure has come a long way.

I've just started working for KFC's here in carlow. Trying to get enough money together to repeat, will hopefully be able to get the days off and assuming elexes is gonna drive up, I'll be there with bells on :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,958 ✭✭✭Fobia

Well, actually, what I meant was, will computer services be monitoring it? If so then I'm sure they have better things to do......:D. Of course what Caliden said applies for Saturday and Sunday tho as there's rarely anyone from computer services in the college and if so it's for different reasons. Whoopenshpooken

I'll be monitoring it, and the traffic is monitored by several people, not just Services.
They don't have to be sitting in front of a console to see what is going on.

    Logs tbh.

Nah nuig computer services are wayy too 1337 to use logs tbh they are too good to even need logs....or patched os's ......or the ability to upgrade mail servers....or.

This could take a while :)

Right, the cpus, case, ram, hard drive and floppy drive <:)> have been ordered from Komplett.
I might be ordering the mobo, the optical drive and the ram cooler later tonight if I can get through to Rory for his credit card....

I meant to ring Buildings Office today, but was busy. Will ring them tomorrow to confirm the booking , furniture and security arrangements.
Then all that remains is some prize sponsorship, the *as of yet unconfirmed* net connection and installing/configuring the network and servers.

    le soupir du contentement....

I don't know what you've done even to get that far Syxpak.

    /me bows to the man

    I hope it was legal....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

....."as of yet unconfirmed" implies I haven't actually asked anyone.

It'll be perfectly legal etc., and it will be within the HEAnet Acceptable Usage Policy as GalwayLAN is being held in association with CompSoc's Networking Conference.

Right, I've split stuff from the thread.

Cut the cocknockery and the bitching or I'll be handing out bans to people regardless of "status".

This is a sad time for galwaylan that bickering is at an all time high and sodomy is at an all time low.
