What is good to eat or drink after a workout-i usually just drink water,2 bananas and sometimes a breakfast far thing from kellogs.

One of the lads in the gym mentioned a shake called "Prorecovery".What are people thoughts on this or similair drinks.

    Any feedback appreciated

I think that would depend on the work-out - if you are after lifting weights you defo need plenty of protein as well as carbs. If the workout is more aerobic, say running you need to load up on carbs, people argue until the cows come home about when best to take complex or simple carbs (which are absorbed quicker) but some diluted orange with a pinch of salt would do fine as a sports drink (just as effective as most "sports drinks"). Sugary cereal will also provide carbs, maybe throw in a bit of protein as well (an egg or 2 on toast). Oats are a well respected source of carbs.
I personally have a lunch or a dinner after the gym to replace lost minerals, and stock up on carbs / protein.
The general advice would be have a full meal within 2 hours

    simonmc,

The answer to your question largely depends on what you normally do at the gym, what your goals are, and what time of day you normally do your session.

Personally speaking, I don't think you would need to be buying 'Prorecovery' (which I am guessing is some kind of high protein / high carb milk shake powder) for every session - they would cost you about €2 a pop too. If you were working out at a very high intensity continuously for 90 minutes or more, then maybe.

Under usual circumstances, I'd say what you eat is fine, though perhaps you are still hungry afterwards (hence the thread). You could add more fruit, or something like a tuna sandwich, a glass of milk, or indeed go for the full balanced meal (i.e. your dinner, etc).

I usually try to eat my dinner after the gym, even though my work / commute / gym daily routine during the week means 'dinner' is 10pm.

It all depends. If it's after a weights session, then I'd go for a tuna melt, and a pint of milk within a half hour to deliver protein to repair and build the muscle.

If it was aerobic, then I tend to go for some simple carbs, maybe banana and water. But I would eat a proper meal in the next hour or two.

There is no need for recovery drinks etc if you choose what to eat correctly.

I have been out of gym/training since this time last year, gave up after 6th year.Back in the gym now 3/4 times a week.I started back about 2 months ago.

I start off with about 45-60 min of areobic work - tradmill, bike, cross T,rowing. Then il move on to the weights, bit of free weights but majority is on the machines -lat pull etc.

At the mo im just looking to increase overall fitness with the aerobic work and lose a bit of weight, while using weights to increase muscle tone etc. Im putting about 40-50kg on the machines with 3 sets of 15 and one set of 6 with a heavier weight.

Usually it aint possible to hold out that long because of buses or im rushing to a lecture.

So would a few bananas and pint of milk do the job?

    Thanks everyone for feedback

45-60 mins cardio + weights will use a lot of energy, need to replace those carbs so you dont crash out.

I used to eat a packet of figrolls or jaffa cakes after training, or a banana sandwich, plus a bottle of lucozade sport or pint of skim milk.

After weights I'd shove down some lean protein, shake or steak, whatever you can get down. And OJ for an insulin spike to transport the Creatine to my muscles and Liver along with the carbs they crave :) Hard weight training usually makes me sick to my stomach, apparently all the blood is diverted to the muscles and your guts pretty much shut down? Hard to hack food then but within a half hour is best for protein uptake.Get yourself rehydrated too, sweat drains you fast! A water filter jug full in the fridge makes that way easier, though be careful if your very unfit. There are stories of cold mountain streams causing heart attacks. The intense cold causes the body to divert blood (heat) to the gut leaving to little to run the over stressed system? I am hoping this is an urban? woodsy legend , but I dunno, so bear it in mind.
