ZX81

I got it for christmas in '83 or '84 or sometime around then.

Loved it. Powerfull 1KB of memory too.
Got a 16K Ram pack for my birthday and got 3D-Defender.
Loved that game.

Graduated to a 32K ZX Spectrum then and played Jetpack and Manic Miner for years.

ZX Spectrum 48K. Fantastic computer whose joys are still available thanks to the wonders of emulation. I eventually upgraded the keyboard, transforming it into the deadly 48K+. 733t.

Spectrum +2. I remember my excitement to come home one day and find it upgraded to a +3 which *shock* a floppy disk drive :D

First PC was an IBM 8086 m/c with 1MB of RAM, floppy drive, amber&black monitor, no hard drive, sound card or mouse.

Commodore Vic 20. Twas before the 64 I think. Cassette
games, as well as big cartridges that were impossible to get in properly.

I think it was an amstrad CPC 464. I had a console before that but I can't remember what it was.
Then my first real computer was an IBM PS/2

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Dr. Dre

Vic 20, C64, CPC 464, CPC 464+, Amiga 1200.....PC's ever since

Hard drivin' on the 464+ totally 0wn3d !

Turbo outrun, ya remember that, goldenaxe now theres another !

also was the loading time of F16 combat pilot on cassette, it used to take something like 1 hour and by the time it loaded you'd have forgotten about it !

48k Speccy was the first one I got my hands on at home. In school we had an apple II and some BBCs. Definitely preferred the speccy

checked the attic a few yrs ago

my VIC20 still works, just, has 'loose' joystick and keyb connections. cassette don't work, cartridges do.

IBM AT 286 (2x 5.25inch drives) still worked fine for dos (iirc also got qnx running)

also still got a box of da's punchcards too and a huge (about 12inches dia) copper coloured HD

FYI the first computer in Ireland was called a H2 (for Irish Sugar in early 60's)

I had a Dragon 32, complete with a 5.25" diskdrive that was about the size of a midi-tower case. Used to play Invaders Revenge constantly. In fact, I played it as recently as yesterday on my Dragon emulator, at work too :D
Still have the whole kit and kaboodle at home somewhere, might fish it out sometime to see if it all still works.

Acorn Electron (BBC Mirco's little brother). I bloody loved that machine. Not too much in the way of games for it though.

Atari STe 1040. Loved that too.

Bought my first PC in '94 (486DX2, 4Mb RAM, 340Mb HD, 15" CRT). Cost a grand sterling.

Radio Shack TRS-80. Z80 microprocessor with 4K of memory. If you wanted a game, you wrote it in level III BASIC, and saved to the external cassette recorder. Arrr.

I still have it.

Commodore VIC-20

Followed by a C64 (1st ed. model) + 1541 mk.1 disk drive (the 'brick')

Anyone have a ZX80? I got a one of the kits, I'll never forget when I got the portable tv tuned in and first saw the prompt on screen... I got a 16k RAM pack and had to jam some paper between it and the back of the computer to stop it crashing.

I sold that and got a ZX81 about a year later. 3d Monster Maze was terrific, as was Mazogs. I still have a C64 but it hasn't been turned on in about 15 years.

Had some old apple pc with an orange screen. Had a fun space invaders type game on it. Following that, had a C16. (also had a VIC-20 cassette player... i'm not sure if i ever had a vic-20 tho :dunno: ) Thrust and X-Zapp, great games.

C64 after that, Rick Dangerous 1/2 and Midnight Resistance are the two best games I can recall. Creatures 1/2, Mayhem In Monsterland, Slicks, California Games, Outrun Europa (better than Turbo Outrun), International Karate+, and Arnie were all great too.

Following that, it was up to a P60 and superb games like Little Big Adventure, Civilization and C&C Red Alert... mmm, better.

C128 [£20 upgrade from CCity for the C64] (1988)

First computer I ever saw was a Spectrum ZX81. My older brother bought it and plugged it in. Not long after the TV went on fire. It was never seen in the house again after! Another computer never entered the house until 2000 when my mother was finally convinced I wouldn't be plugging it into the TV ;)

A ZX81 then, unfortunately, a "Sord M5". Think they were on sale in Arnotts or something... Took these crappy cartridges that you couldn't buy anywhere!

Spent most of my gaming time on a friends C64. Ahhh, Wizball and Head Over Heels... Happy Days! :D

Edit:

I had to go try find the M5.

http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?st=1&c=217

And the wonderful games!!!! http://emul8.xlabs.sk/emulators/sord/ Man I HATED that baseball game. Was I the only one in the country with this piece of crap? :)

was a commodore 64 for me, came with a cartridge, with flimbo's quest, klax, freddie circus (or something) and a soccer game where the football was a plus

when i started playing it, it took me about half a day to figure out i was holding one the extra joystick i had got with it back to front, it was got at xmas and i got the tape deck for my birthday which is only a week or so later.

my first proper computer thingy though was a p3 850 64mb ram 20gb hdd about 3 years ago :)

An Acorn Electron.

I remember that you could embed assembly into Acorn basic... I think? And the same with BBC Micros..?

Defender and Asteroids on the BBC were top class.

I didn't have a games console or computer of any kind til I got a NES in the early 90's. Late starter I was. :dunno:

Got a Sinclair ZX81 round about 1982 I think, then went through
Commodore Vic-20
Commodore 64
Commodore 128
Commodore 128-D
Commodore Amiga 500
Commodore Amiga 1200

And then many hops from an old IBM PC (486SX?) with a 12" monitor, to this here machine which has 1 million times the memory of my good ole 1k ZX81.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 731 ✭✭✭dwayneburke

The NES....oooooh the memories!!

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 717 ✭✭✭Mad Mike

A 16k Spectrum.

First computer I fell in love with though was a BBC model B. It was (and still is) the ultimate hobbyists computer - It had a host of nerdy features like built in A/D and D/A converters. It also had an absolutely superb BASIC interpreter built into ROM.

And then of course ..... there was Elite.

first one was my dads Apple IIe, but i spent almost every waking hour playing breakout, space invaders and chess.

then came my very own amstrad cpc 6128 which i enjoyed for many years.

then i finally got round to buying my own and get myself a generic grey box pc, which had an AMD K6 200mhz a 1.6gb hard drive and i think 16mb of ram, which caused me no end of problems and was probably the main reason i ended up being an IT engineer. damn thing screwed up so much i ended up fixing it myself after a half a dozen support call outs!

the firt one i remember is the Amstrad 464, and this must of been lyeing around the house 10 years before i even used it. i remember puttin in the tape and watchin the screen go like at the start of vice city. i had total recall, bubble trouble, and chase hq which was my favourite, you basically drove around knockin the enemy car in the rear till it blew up. good times :)

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,604 ✭✭✭irishgeo

C64 and tape drives sucked. Used to hate when i gave my tapes to mates and they came back dirty. I stopped giving them the best tapes then.

i remember copying the tapes. We used to leave the 2 tape radio on its own in a room in case we would disturbed the recording.

to think back now it was hilarious.
