    They value the opinions of the people on the boards and since the media and peolpe involved are so different its somewhat a special way of expressing oneself with a certain anonymity

    to a certain extent yes but everybody likes there opinions backed up by other people thats why your friends will likely by similar to you in tastes of music background etc.
