Went in to the Telnet managment thing in the Prestige to try figure out what was the problem.

Got this from the error log

    PP10 WARN netMakeChannDial: err=-3000 rn_p=80470de0

I googled this and it means:
    remote node is connecting

    Not very helpful at all..

I'm guessing I wouldn't be able to get back on if I disconnected. I'm on the Roachestown Avenue exchange still connected fine

IOLBB back up again in Wexford, and I notice that their DNS servers have changed. From 194.125.2.240/241 to 192.111.39.1/4. Perhaps this was part of the problems?

Yep...let me join the club, was down for hours today. This is bizarre...i was downloading the Far Cry demo for 2 1/2 hours...it came down for me OK.

    551 megs @ 51.1K downstream...then after 6pm the server exploaded again!
This is the issue...IT IS NOT CONTENTION!!!

It's the damn servers or the BAS or some idiot messing about, this is why speeds are pants since the server exploaded last Thursday.

I was beginning to think i was mad, thank god i'm not the only one!
Yet another call to complain tomorrow......

Possibly. Although the errors seemed to be with the Router loggin in to the exchange.
Before you go blaming IOL, eircom basicly provide the service to IOL and last time this happened it turned out out to be Eircoms fault.
If you were to jump to conclusions you could say eircom might be doing it to rubish the competition..

I still think it's an issue with a certain sever or BAS, which is why not everyone is being effected. Same as how the issue last Thursday with username/password did not effect all IOL customers.

Esat need to sort this or i am off and they can whistle for their CONtract.

I think that's automatic, it changes every time you reconnect. Like how you get a new IP every time.

Problem is, every time i call Eircom they blame Esat...then i go to Esat and they blame Eircom.

This issue goes back to the Eircom monolopy, as long as you have hardware mixed with other service providers you're gonna have problems.

If Esat were allowed to own and operate (listen up ComReg) there own network we wouldn't have this blame game.

The problem last Thursday related to both Esat and Eircom, both sets of hardware failed.

Altough in fairness xDSL is in its infancy in Ireland at this stage and the last few months have seen a large amount of people coming online via DSL so its not surprising there are a few problems.

It will all iron its self out.

It's up and running a year now, i think it's about time they got their act together...don't you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 297 ✭✭markyboy

Ronoc you are being too kind.

I work in a company where if this sort of thing happened to its staff let alone its customers, heads would roll.

It's all about customers and if you want to keep them or not.

Whether you blame esat or eircon doesn't matter. From an eircon point of view they don't care and have their customers. From esat's they'd want to be able to work on a way of notifying their customers directly about these sort of outages or they wont have any customers in a years time.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

IOL are going the way of Netsource and the "no cap" fiasco and capping speeds. It will effect them like Netsource....alot of people read Boards and follow people's advice.

If potential customers keep reading about problems with Esat they will choose some other provider...

    It's called competition.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,450 Mod ✭✭✭✭dub45

There is an appalling lack of communication from all the ISP's with their customers. At times it seems to border on contempt.

Seems to me that there is an urgent need for some sort of consumer group to represent broadband users that would have to clout to be able to get onto the ISP's at the appropriate level to make representations and to find out whats going on where theres breaks in service etc.

Its disgusting to think that UTV and IOL have had major issues over the past few weeks and there has been no statement (AFAIK) in plain English stating something to the effect a piece of equipment belonging to X exploded or whatever on such and such a date. The effects of this are blah blah. Normal service will be affected for approx blah blah. We apologise to all users and rest assured we are working etc.

Would the world end or something if that type of statemen was to be issued? At least we would all know what was going on and it might even take some of the pressure of the support lines.

The lack of communication (coupled with the reported very poor service and long waits associated with the 'support' lines) is leading to a lot of frustration for customers and I can't think of any other industry where it would be tolerated.

Maybe we should all suspend our direct debits until we get certain assurances from the ISP's?

Yep back up here after being down all evening... pings are still ~300ms to boards.ie with 50% packet loss.
Downloads are better then they were earlier today, which isn't saying much really.
We need a way out of this contract, this regular downtime and rotten performance is unacceptable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 793 ✭✭✭Kegser

I have yet to read the contract, but it is null and void if they are unable to provide the service they advertised when you signed up.

I seem to remember 24/7 access was one apparent feature..... which, lets face it, has not been happening. Not since I got BB anyway that's for damn sure.

    Hi

apart from IOL being down most of yesterday are any of you having problems just with email..

This started for me on Monday Night..and since then I cant send or receive emails.

I've tried everything and double and treble checked settings....Web itself came back overnight but email is still not working.

someone mentioned a change in the address of the DNS server... could that impact email ?

any help appreciated.. Fraid I havnt the time or patienceto call IOL Tech support

    Woody

Ps how do you go about getting your bill reduced for the days there was no service.. in the days I was with eircom they had a customer charter of some sort. and it had rules for credits.. do IOL have anything similar....I mean if you hired a car for the month and it was broken down and unusable for 3 or 4 days out of the month you wouldnt pay the full charge...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭ondafly

IOL was down for me in D15 - yet my friend in Blanch was able to connect. (this was at 8.30pm)

its a disgrace that this sort of thing is happening. Its not fun paying for a service you don't get.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 32 yallingup

It's still down where I am in the western 'burbs. And after 10 mins on hold last night, yer man tells me to re-install the drivers - for an Ethernet modem! - as a solution. Also claimed no one else had complained about down time.

Bloody comedians. Maybe their ESB bill payment got stuck in the post?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 662 ✭✭✭Ba$tard

    An answer to previous Q....
IOL's DNS servers dont change when you connect, your IP does. they have static DNS servers. And yes, if there was a DNS problem or migration last night, then we would see what we say.

In my opinion, its not a physical routing issue (i.e. Eircom) but an internal issue near the last stage of negotiating PPP with IOL. You dont get an IP address, it cannot assign you one. Its called a peer abort. IOL's side disconnects you as it cannot completely start the PPP session. You can test this by dumping in a wrong user/pass and if you get an authorisation failure, you know everything works as far as IOL's BSN. Whats behind the BSN is the issue.

I do see SOME updates from IOL BB on boards.iol.ie about expected outages, actually 2 in the last 4 months only. They should also make notifications about unexpected outages and some detail and who is affected should complement the anouncement. Makes me ponder the management quality and customer disclosure policy at IOL/Esat being honest.

If they dont look after their customers, someone else will.

I had trouble sending mail using the oceanfree.net mail server. I was getting a 'no relaying' error. Strange since I thought they were all part of the same company and has worked fine till yesterday. I changed my smtp server to mail2.eircom.net and all was ok.

This raises the question what mail servers work with IOLBB?

Just to let you know that there are similar issues with some UTV customers. It seems to arise when people are trying to access non UTV email accounts.

So if anyone is having similar difficuties dont adjust your settings it is obviously an issue with some of the equipment that they share. For anyone in urgent need of their mail dont forget some webmail sites like yahoo allow you to assess other accounts so that might help you temporarily.

    Hi

I also had the same problem last night.
I called IOL at 7pm last night to see what was wrong i was on hold for 45min. I had the phone on loud speaker and watched the TV while on hold.

Any way after 45 min I was told there was a problem and everybody was affected. He was unsure of the exact problem. I asked why they did not have a front end message saying someting so you did not have to hold for ages. He said the they could not do that or it would kick people in the que off when they made the change. Theat is Sh!t and if not, for a telecom's company they must be using some crap Call center software.

Exactly what I was thinking. FFS, you call ESB if there's a power-cut and they almost instantly have a recording stating that there is, indeed, an issue, which area(s) are affected, roughly when it started, what and where the cause is and its severity (if known) and also a guestimate of when it's expected to be resolved.

Call IOL - a telecommunications company - (1800923111), get told to call 1904, then told to call 1891923111, if you're calling for BB, NS etc please hold, 'cept you can't 'cos it cuts you off after a minute. Many retries later you finally get rung through, and a thank you for waiting bla bla, with a mix of crappy music varying from whispers to short loud bursts and then silence so you dunno if you're still in the queue.

Contract? They're not providing the level of service for which people are paying, and they are in breach. Any nullification of said contract by a customer would in my opinion be completely valid.

    :dunno:

    It is what it's.

Marvellous! I just ordered IOLBB yesterday!!

What's the story with the contract, do you actually sign one? I seem to remember people saying a contract was never sent out to them to sign. I don't want to sign a contract for a year while the service is like this.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,450 Mod ✭✭✭✭dub45

I thought I was just being paranoid! Sabotage to get IOLBB/UTV customers to change over? You decide!

Constant wild claims like this do not help the overall situation. I am no fan of Eircom by any means but I have never seen even the smallest piece of evidence here of any such sabotage. If anyone has such evidence then it would be helpful for all concerned to report it to the Regulator. Making wild claims about Eircom muddies the water and takes the heat off IOL and UTV.

In this case it seems that a piece of equipment on the Esat network which UTV also use failed and that has generated a lot of the problems. If you read other threads here you will see customers of both services reporting very similar problems.

In the fallout from the equipment failure both UTV and IOL have been very good at sabotaging their own reputations particularly by appalling communications with their customers as reported so frequently here. They did not need any assistance from Eircom at all:rolleyes:
