Yesh! I am also a girlie fed up of goin to da movies on my tod .
I'd definately be interested in a Film Club in the Dublin area if one exists.
    Can anyone enlighten us?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,554 ✭✭✭herobear

actually yeah, i'd be very interested in this also.

a boards film group/club would be great!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 421 ✭✭SweetBirdOfTruth

well let's just go for setting up a small boards club and see if it grows.

what sort of films are people interested in? ifi films, ugc films or savoy films?

i suggest setting some evening during the week, meeting early, picking a flick that's on that night and going to it. anyone game?

Hmm I'd be game if we want to get a cinema club going. Not going to the flicks as much as I like. Then again that could be DVD's fault as well :)

I beg to differ ... you go on your own .. you don't have anyone distracting you.....asking "what did I miss" when they venture off to the loo ..

    films are best watched alone...

I'd be on for that too. I keep missing out on films in the cinema, mostly due to forgetting about them than anything else :)
IFI and UGC would be good places to head to I think.

  • Subscribers Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭Draco

well I'll make this a sticky and see if it generates any more interest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,153 ✭✭✭ronano

I am 100% for it but on moral grounds i shall never set foot inside the ifi :D

I'm surprised more people are not interested, i've never joined a club or anything in my life but this does spark interest

It doesn't necessarily need loads of people interested for it to work, just a bunch of people who can agree on a movie really :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 421 ✭✭SweetBirdOfTruth

ok, how about we it it this. we agree a night - tuedays and thursdays are best for me. we agree to meet in the foyer of ugc. we agree a film to go to that night. there's bound to be something decent on within two hours. we buy our tickets, retire to the bar if we have time, see the film and do what ever comes after?

    anyone game?

i would be really interested in something like that, so if something gets set in stone!! i'll be there :)

    that sounds like a plan.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 97 ✭✭rde

Not wanting to pick holes, or anything, but there may be several problems with this cunning plan...

    1. Chances are some people'd have seen the majority choice before.
    2. There may be people too young to get into a certain film
    3. If it's a popular film, half may get in, half may not if enough turn up. Hence, no going to a film in the first week (possibly two; Zatoichi was pretty full the other night, and it's been out for a while).

So my suggestion is this: meet up on xxxday at n o'clock, when the following three films will start within the hour:
Bambi Goes Crazy-Ape Bonkers with a Drill and Set (Cert. U) 8:40
Passion of Christ II (Cert. 15) 8:25
Star Wars : The Final Insult (Cert 18) 8:10.

Yeah, that sounds good to me too.
rde, if there's people under 18 wanting to go they can let everyone know before hand so a film they can't get into isn't picked.
Also, wrt people having seen the movies already. We could just go to new releases or else go with a majority rules thing on the film that's been chosen.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 421 ✭✭SweetBirdOfTruth

shall we agree on capturing the friedmans then? do people want to meet in the foyer or the bar upstairs?

Would it be rude of me to ask how this went?
I couldn't make it yesterday because right now I'm too broke to do anything that isn't sitting in and reading. But I'd be interested in taking part next week, assuming the film club is still up and running.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 801 ✭✭✭dod

Dammit. I've only seen this thread now. I have been to the cinema four times in all my life (most recently for The Passion of The Christ), and I wouldn't mind seeing one or two more movies. Ah well. Do report on how the Film Club went. Please do let us know when the next outing is.

If I make an effort.... I might make it up to 5 trips to the cinema!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Frank Grimes

Went good. Myself, SweetBirdOfTruth and dr strangelove showed up.
We're thinking of going Tuesday week (27th) if that sounds ok with everyone else.
Btw. Capturing the Friedmans is one weird movie. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 421 ✭✭SweetBirdOfTruth

three of us made it along. well, three of us met up. after doing it twice i just coulnd't face a third time of approaching a stranger outside the ugc and asking them if they were waiting for someone from boards :) we saw the film and had a few pints in the ugc bar afterwards.

we'll be doing it again in a fortnight - tuesday, april 27th. it'll be ugc again. there's a few good films out in the next fortnight, from kill bill through eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. will post the ugc schedule for the tuesday here on the tursday before.

will post in the film in the reviews folder in due course.

hopefully a few more can make it along in the 27th. stick the date in your diary now, we'll decide the film nearer the time.

oh, and next time i'll post by mobile number. or promise to wear a pink carnation.

Awww... 6.15-6.30pm is way too early for people, (like meself), working outside the city centre to get into the UGC. Rush hour traffic is a bugger to get through :(
8pm-ish might have been a more resonable time... possibly more ppl would have been able to turn up?? (me included??) :dunno:
Also, can I suggest something? Next time pick a landmark for everyone to meet up at... might make things a bit easier.

Good to hear yiz all had a good time. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Frank Grimes

    UGC was the landmark ;)
If it's left any later than that time though you're looking at going to a showing around 9 or even later.

the next time might be later, depending on the film - but don't forget, 6.15-6.30 was for a 6.50 film that didn't start until about 7.15 - you may arrive late and just meet us in the bar later if we do pick an early film.

next time i'll post my mobile number, to make it easier for latecomers to find us. but as it was, i don't think anyone turned up looking for us and couldn't find us.

What's wrong with that? (that's just a Q btw... I'm not starting an aggro)

I was in town but alas i was late and i checked the thread at like 6.30 and saw that no place for actual meeting was said, i however did go to see the movie with a friend at 6.50 and it was interesting to say the least. I 'll make sure to catch the next one

nothing necessarily wrong with it k, but the opposite problem of getting home crops up - it then becomes a rush for the last bus. let's play it by ear though and see what most people want come th 27th. if enough people are happy for a later showing then that's enough.

btw - how early can you get in?

i'll post my mobile number next time. maybe i can stick it somewhere in my profile?

it was actually easy enough to spot who was waiting for people from boards outside the cinema and who was waiting for someone else, or just having a last fag.

first time round it was just as much about seeing whether enough people were interested as about having a properly thought-out fool-proof plan.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭Ebony

I'll definatly come on the 27th I only just read the thread I wish I'd read it before cause I'm definatly up for a film club! :)

    see ya's there (hopefully)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 65 ✭✭Archvillain

Wow, I just arrived at this site and I'm really impressed. A film club idea sounds... (deadly?... hmmm haven't used that word since I was 9) cool.
Anyway the 27th in the UGC. I'll try and keep updated on decisions regarding time..etc, although if it's to be done democratically, I'm for later rather than earlier....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 816 ✭✭✭dr strangelove

If there is a big problem with the times - how about do the club weekly, but one week goto a late showing (about 9-ish) and the next goto the early showing (7-ish) and so on, so everyone's happy?
