    Left the pub @ 12.30ish.

I saw flagrant disregard for the law. Crimewatch will be working overtime this month putting names to the security cam faces.

Was in that ****e-hole 'Isoldes Tower' off Parliament Street. The jacks was full of smokers and so was the back of the pub - including some whacky smokes.

I'm not a smoker and neither am I very militant about this law - but I hope it doesn't mean that you are hardly going to get into the jacks to take a piss because of the smokers.

Still it was hardly going to work half-way through the first night,

This is a tough law to implement. Picture q bar jacks on a friday night about 12. U get the picture. They will be smoking in Jacks easily.

I work in a night club and it was enforced tonight(sunday) from half eleven onwards.
People seemed to accept it easily enough.

brilliant, now i can go out "on the piss", sleep in my clothes and not smell like an ashtray when i wear them to work in the morning

it should never have been alowed

but I hope it doesn't mean that you are hardly going to get into the jacks to take a piss because of the smokers.

mate!, the world is your urinal

Because those things are scary (to me) and an excuse for some people to do other things in the street (saw it with my own eyes no less than 2 months ago)
Anyway, It'd cause 'moral outrage' among the biddies in the country ;)

who cares about the pubs, i cant freakin smoke in work!

    im gaspin :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,628 ✭✭✭Asok

I'm a smoker and tbh i dont really care about the ban if I want one ill go outside either way it will end up saving me money each night I go out but one thing if it happens will annoy the ****e out of me is if people just run into the jax for a smoke, trying to get to a bog in a pub at night is hard enough without having 20 smokers in there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 579 ✭✭✭Da_cOmRaDe_MiKe

i think its great. but i smoke aswell. smoking in pubs is just bad anyways. it annoying at work cos we gotta leave the premises now but hey thats life. id easily give up smoking now because its such an inconvience to do it now. i think there will be a great response but i reckon there will be a few disputes and fines to come.

what are you people on about, smoking in pubs is part of the irish culture. drink, music, and smoking (whether its cigars, pipes or cigarettes) is what a typical pub should be.yeah i know, your clothes can stink from it, but who wears the clothes they wore out the night before anyway?!? give them a wash for god's sake!!!! yeah im a smoker but cut down a lot recently, don't mind the ban too much but it gets annoying when people insist on bitchin' about how horrible the smokers are, get over it!

em....i think i just said above that i don't mind the ban, so i think i am over it. but does anyone know if a pub/club has an outdoor part to their building, are people able to smoke there? because it's still on their premises.

Well Christmas doesn't generally give you lung cancer so it's a bit of a trite comparion...

no the smoke ban should be sufficiant for the moment

A few pubs (including one down the road from me) are planning to put some kind of Smoking area in their car park, probably like an elaborate shed with a few seats in it. Technically I suppose it should be seperate from the main building.

*Not really, but somethin din't go down right t'other day.

Yay! Can't wait to go out tomorrow to check out the atmosphere :) Having said that I did notice a huge difference the last few months in the reduction of smokiness.

    It is what it's.

No, but it causes more deaths than passive smoking. Drunk driving and Suicide go through the roof at christmas.

    Ban it I say.

Any pubs building smoking rooms ought to be very careful, I can see a rash of future court cases with cancerous claimants blaming liability on the pubs for providing areas where they could smoke and cultivate their illness. Similar to the spate of cases in the US where people sued the cigarrette manufacturers for not telling them the cigarrettes were extremely harmful and by the time they found out they were already addicted.

One could argue the by providing a place for people to smoke that publicans are in fact encouraging people to continue smoking, in contradiction with the spirit of the bill. €€€!

Well that's a drink and cultural problem, not a Christmas one. God also effectively bans suicide so it's all okay....

Although it'd be really interesting, methinks, to ban drink in Ireland and see how we all cope. And yes, I do drink.

    yep, couldnt agree more..

as for the ban, im not a fan of it... people these days seem to be afraid of the fact that death is a natural part of life... your going to die anyway, sure some passive smoke is hardly going to cut 50 years off your life?

besides what ye moaning about you get it for free, im the bugger that has to pay for em :p

It wouldn't stand, legally, I don't think. By going to the effort of continuing a smoking environment in flagrance with the spirit of the law (or as a direct result of) you could definitely argue the are encouraging it. It's an unsafe environment in the same sense that if they had dodgy stairs and put up a sign saying "Caution - Dodgy Stairs" yet anyone who cracks their hoop falling down 'em will have a great case to sue :p

Jesus, dont you read your own sides laws?

Its perfectly legal to smoke in a non-enclosed area. This includes beer gardens. or sheds with 50% non-enclosure.

Looking forward to the good weather already. Tell me DoctorJ, what beer gardens do you like?

If i was to go into a pub and piss on the floor nobody would like it. So it's best that doing other discusting things like smoking is not acceptable anymore.

Anti ban people face it - It's not the non smoking you are pissed about it's the "being told what to do"

This will be people policed - the fact that you will go into a pub and nobody else is smoking will make sure you don't.
I'm sure there are pubs today with people smking - but this will eventually die out
