Nope. Currently downloading latest version of kde from ftp.esat.net and getting a constant 52kB/sec.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,821 ✭✭✭Xcellor

I am in Longford area. No probs here... Been downloading since this morning and have got over 1 gigabyte of Sims Online! A little bit more to go :) Average speed 45-50 but fluctuates down to 15 then bumps back up again. That may be due to someone else using the connection too :)

Speeds ok as far as I can tell but I can't get websites a lot. Having to refresh for a few minutes to get them.

I'm not getting disconnected though. It's happenening to both of my machines so tis nothing to do with them and I see nothing mentioned in my router's error logs.

Yep IOLBB is crawling for me today (Stillorgan). Slow page load etc.

Funny but there was no problems prior to the contention ratio reduction.

Can not even download things now. Really bad. Is this as a result of contention? I never had it this bad before. :(

EDIT: Must have been contention. Its perfect now. Better not happen again. It was really pants tonight.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

It can't be contention, this problem only started last Thursday when the Esat sever exploaded. Why all of a sudden did we encounter contention?

I am experiencing bad speeds ALL the time now, if contention was an issue it would be at certain times of the day. This has to be an issue with the ISP's

I very much doubt that contention is an issue, since it never was before when we were all on 48:1...none of us had problems then?

Has anyone rang up to complain?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Davey Devil

My d/l speeds are most definatly being caused by contention. 7pm to 11pm my speeds are crap and the rest of the time they are fine. They should never have brought in the 16gb cap, people are downloading the whole internet now for christ sake. 24:1 ratio me arse

Double cap half contention - do the math - its not contention its to do with Esats stupid BAS blowing up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 91 ✭✭Unexpected

    Seriously? Something blew up? :dunno:

Same problem again, and WORSE. The last two hours i could not login nor downloading anything. Just now things started to move.

These problems are NOT contention issues, it's an issue with Esat and their servers. Isin't it strange all these problems started AFTER the sever problem last Thursday?

It was certain times of the day, now it's all the time and things are getting worse.
If no one experience contention issues at 48:1 we're not gonna see it on 24:1.

There aren't enough people on the system yet to even come close to contention issues, the issue IS with Esat and the Eircom hardware.

On Friday I was downloading updates , and was getting speeds of 17KB - Friend was updating his xbox at the same time so I presumed that was the reason.

Later on - using just one PC online - I downloaded media player 9 for a PC again speeds were 17KB. This time no Xbox was connected.

Didn't download anything until Sunday, and speeds were back to normal.

Started playing xbox live that night - and strange thing is all voice communication is choppy as hell , no lag in game though. Last night, same again, choppy voice communication and no lag.

Something is screwed up somewhere !

I doubt thats a ping spike, the 193.95.131.6 router appears to be in INEX, so its primary job is to handle a whack load of data coming in and out of different isps in the exchange, ICMP (ping) requests I would guess are simply deprioritised so you get the reply when the router 'gets around to it' as opposed to straight away with the other routers.

I swear to God, IOL-BB right now is so slow that webpages would load faster on a 56K modem with 3 downloads in the background.

like Xcellor, I haven't experienced any real problems over the last week or so...

on thursday last it was a bit slow alright, but apart from that it was fine.

Last night I was downloading some information and gaming online at the same time with no lag or speed issues, and this morning before I left I had some downloads running at a total speed of 36kbps.....

seems ok to me, maybe I'm just the lucky one!! :)

I'm on the dunlaoire exchnage btw

I'm on Roaches St. exchange, i feel this is limited to certain exchanges and users connected to certain servers at those exchanges.

I have suggested same to Esat and called Eircom about any technical issues at my local exchange.

No word yet...gotta keep these guys under pressure!

There is nothing more I would like to do than eat the head off Esat IOL BT whatever they call themselves... but presently I can't coz there isnt anything to complain about.. Sub 30 pings to boards... 50+kB/ps. No downtime.

You could call me a satisfied customer... Although I'm a bit concerned if I say that it might go terribly wrong...

I had the same thing!...i was online at 4am, to check and see of problems are in fact contention issues.

It's not...why?, i am currently downloading as i type the Far Cry demo, 551 megs...my speed is constant at 51.1K downstream, not bad at all.

But last night i could not login, username/password refused...took 2 hours for it to accept, then ALL Microsoft websites were gone. MSN was the same.

It just seems to me that there is some issue with a server or some exchanges, do you guys remember around July last year, remember when we had problems downloading web pages?

It seems to be that issue again, did someone say it was backhaul at the exchanges?

I'm ping pretty high too. It's strange, I can download reasonably fast but ping like crap. Packet loss ain't a problem either.

I use IOLBB for gaming mainly. I can't play CoD with high pings...I think I'll fire up HaloPC.

Can you prove that Eircom are sabotaging their competitors? If you cannot stop making wild alleagations. They take the heat off (in this case anyways) UTV and IOL.
If you can prove it they by all means post the evidence and let the companies concerned take it to the regulator.

I am no fan of eircom by the way but wild allegations do not help clarify what is going on. And in this case it appears to have been equipment shared somewhere along the line by UTV/Esat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,468 ✭✭✭Lex_Diamonds

I have no direct proof regarding this, only eircoms previous track record over the years. It would seem the most likely explanation though, seeing as not a single Eircom customer is affected.
