I think Clint Eastwoods "Mystic River" will do well.

I think Tim Robbins, Sean Penn and Clint Eastwood are in with a very good chance.

I think LOTR Return of the King will get best picture.

Does anyone care about the Oscars anymore?

That is, anybody who is more into films than celebrity gossip. I for one could do without that particular hypefest.

Charlize Theron for best actress does. Superb performance in Monster.

    My 2c:

    Best Film - ROTK
Best Actor - Bill Murray (Sean Penn should get it, but his "politics" don't do him any favours)
    Best Actress - Charlize Theron

Also have a sneaking suspicion that the Iranian actress from House Of Sand And Fog will win best supporting actress.

I want Master and Commander to pick up either Picture or Director. And for Lord of the Rings to pick up whichever one it doesn't get. Preferably Jackson for director and M&C for picture. Bill Murray for actor would be good...

And Touching the Void for documentary...

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

I hope the over-rated Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World does NOT get it. Thankfully, odds are (and I'm going by William Hill here) it's the 20/1 outsider....

What I want to win and what probably will:
Best Picture: RotK but I've a feeling Lost in Translation will
Best Director: Peter Jackson. Will win it too.
Best Actor: Bill Murray. It's a fine performance but I want Johnny Depp to win.
Best Actress: Eh - let Keisha Hughes win it but I suspect Theron will (ain't seen "Monster")
Best Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins winning here would be fine, and he probably will too.
Bust Supporting Actress: The Iranian woman from "House of Sand and Fog" deserves it, but Renee will be rewarded for failing so often.

    My predictions:

    Picture: Return of the King
    Director: Peter Jackson
Actor: Sean Penn (possibly Johnny Depp)
    Actress: Charlize Theron
    Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins
    Supporting Actress: Renée Zellweger
    Original Screenplay: Lost In Translation
Adapted Screenplay: Mystic River (possibly ROTK)

Not a bleedin chance. You can practically see Johnathan Ross's face screaming "Damn Americans and their long advert breaks!" when he comes out with lines like "I know Art Direction is a particular favourite of yours"

Despite Angelina Jolie looking well (backstage must be rather cold, poor thing) and so on and so forth, I'm off to bed and might think about watching the RTE 70-minute version tomorrow. Or perhaps not even that - even ten minutes of watching it reminds me of what an asslicking spectacular the Oscars always are ("thanks to Mommy, Uncle Dick, my fifth grade biology teacher, my personal lord Jesus, Ganesha, the guy who makes the squishees, my film crew all named one by one, my movie company (please give me another job now you have to pay me more and my granny smiling down on me who introduced me to this dancing spectacular of film magicary with the film and the reels and the peanuts"). At least the SAG awards aren't so obviously bought.

Why any of these are in spoilers I can't figure (given that no-one's going to open a thread on the oscars after the show begins if they want any secrets kept secret until they watch it) but better to be nice and careful I suppose. Anyhoo...

Lots of heavy campaigning for that particular one in the past few days and weeks - plenty of heart-string pulling and that kind of thing. It's only run at two film festivals, hasn't any kind of commercial release (then again it's only about 40 minutes long) and I doubt very many have seen it. It's certainly a worthy subject though - a better one than at least one of the other two nominees.

(oh if there's anyone reading this and not running over the spoilers, stay away from imdb until you've seen the show - the results are conveniently splashed across the front page)

The difference between sound editing and sound mixing in oscarland is pretty simple. Sound mixing was once just called "sound" and has been awarded every year since the third Oscar ceremony. Sound editing started as a special category first awarded to It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (going cheap in HMV at the moment by the way, pick it up) when it was called Best Sound Effects. It was called Best Sound Effects Editing when it was added as a regular category in the early 80s and is now simply called Best Sound Editing. The sound mixing award is always given every year with five nominations. The sound editing is an optional category that can be awarded to one movie with no ballot or is only included on the ballot if there are at least two movies that achieve a score of over 8.5 out of 10 as adjudicated by the nomination panel. If no movie is deemed good enough, there's no sound editing winner. There are never more than three nominees in this category. The fact that there are two categories in a relatively technical field probably just reflects the increasing complexity (read as "lots of people doing two different things, let's split the category") in the sound field. Easy to know the difference when you know what each category was once called.

Now if you'd asked the difference between direction and cinematography I'd have to knock it on to Dustaz or Lump. Obviously there's a difference (and two different people doing the job) but I can't ever see the difference unless I assume that the director stays the hell away from the camera. Unless I'm completely misinterpreting what cinematography is (though I do recognise that Heaven's Gate looked fantastic but was still terrible and that Out of Africa was a beautifully-shot movie that bored the crap out of me)

... Still using spoiler space in case anybody wants to see only a few of them and watch the ceremonies later on...

Joint first along with that long boring piece of crap. And Ben Hur. It'd be 11 from 11 though which would be a first (Titanic won 11 from 14, Ben hur 11 from 12). Unlike the other two though, there aren't any wins for ROTK that should have obviously gone to other movies so there are unlikely to be many whingers. There are only about three cases where a movie that won Best Director didn't go on to win Picture as well (I think 1990 was the last time it happened though I've not been paying attention. Safe bet then

Well deserved that one. I'm rather sorry for two of the others who may be unlikely to get one in the future short of becoming great humanitarians. It's the old story that they could have won in many other years.

Hugely surprised Sean Penn won. To be honest, I thought his political views would have turned off a lot of voters.

For such a great actor Tim Robbins had some difficulty constructing the most basic of sentences. And was that his second kid in the row beside him? If so, why didn't he hug him like he did the first one? Daddy playing favourites perhaps?

Thought Johnathon Woss and his crew were excellent. Rob Whatshisname from Marion And Jeff has superb comic timing.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Yeah Tim Robbins seemed a bit out of it....

Yer man Rob's comic timing was spot on. He had a great banter going. The "I'm not gay" reoccurring joke amused me because foolish people would have really thought he was seriously offended. Alastair McGowan came off as a bit of a tit though, to be honest. I loved Ross rubbing his nose in it everytime LotR:RotK won another award until McGowan was forced to eat humble pie...

No real surprises, altho' I didn't expect a clean sweep for LotR:RotK either. Pretty much agreed with every award, except I would have prefered Depp to claim a prize. Oh well! I'm surprisingly not tired either...

The Oscars really do blow. ROTK is a great film but IMHO City of God tops it in most departments. But because of Oscar's silly foreign film eligibility rules and basic pro-American bias it got nowt.

And it's a shame to see Johnny Depp passed over yet again. Not that 'Pirates' was his best work, but he's got an incredible body of work behind him, just doesn't get his due recognition because of his ... incredible body.

City of God certainly deserved the award for Film Editing, an award which Lord of the Rings did not...

For a Pro-American awards show, there weren't too many American accents accepting awards.

Johnny Depp didn't deserve the oscar last night, plain and simple. No previous work he's done can change that.

Hey....its the Return of the King of the world!

......I was really hoping Peter Jackson would tip a humourous nod to Camerons big11 winner by finishing his acceptance speech with...."Its the Return of the king of the world!!". Instead he disappointed me and finished by saying ...."thanks Mum!" :D:D
