    - the recent thread about the old chocolate bar reminded me of all the old ice pops we used to get as kids. I can remember 3 off the top of my head, all are HB -

Haiawatha - this was different shades of brown soft ice cream in the shape of an
    injun head

JR - orange and wine colour ice pop named after Dallas' finest - they even had a Stetson beside it on the poster that had all the ice pops and prices

Angel - cheap white ice pop, lovely

    - anyone care to list off some more?

All of these still exist as far as I know.
Do they still do Icebergers? The icea cream in between the biscuity stuff like a sandwich/burger??

    Calypso... are they still around?

Tangle Twisters aren't the same anymore. Not as zingy!

Yup, far as I know Iceburgers are still around and damn tasty they are too. Haven't seen a Calypso in a while though. Tangle Twisters...still avilable, but got a lot smaller since back in the day. (Or maybe I've grown.........nah!)

My favourites used to be Feast, Brunch, good old reliable Choc-Ice or Orange Split, (none of your fancy-schmancy Magnum, oh no!) and a LONG time ago, a lolly called "Scribblers"

Fnuckin' gorgeous! :) God. It's snowin' outside and all I want is an ice-cream!

Were they called Gollywogs? I'm not sure, memories a bit faded on this one. The name had to be changed for P.C. reasons?

Robertson's Jams used to have a Golly as its symbol. They even had promotions such as collect so many labels and get a metal enamalled Golly badge playing a musical instrument. There was a whole band to collect.

Alas they were obviously corrupting us and had to be stamped out before it warped any more young minds.

Wasn't there a red devil ice pop at one stage, something like a Fat Frog only red? They were nice, very sweet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,972 ✭✭✭SheroN

I was banned from eating red devils when i was young coz they used make me hyper and go crazy.

The way I remember it, it was the number 7's that got you a freebie. Same with Postman Pat penny sweets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,608 ✭✭✭✭sceptre

I rather liked Robin Hoods. Made by leadmore (which also meant they were hard to get) and far nicer than the old square Chilly Willys.

Aren't Tangle Twisters just called "Twisters" now?

I used to love Icebergers! Had one last weekend but it was a lot smaller than I remember it and in plastic wrapping as opposed to the paper wrapping that was on all goodies of yesteryears!

Gollybars were lovely too, and AFAIK, are still available.

And when funds were low (as they usually were back then) I used to make do with Sparklers which were 10p at the time! I used to get a lot of them along with Golf Ball penny chewing gums! ww)

Going way back, there used to be an ice-pop called a 'Tip Top', which was along the lines of a Wibbly Wobbly Wonder, except the wibbly bit really was jelly-like.

If you did the usual kid thing of nipping off the chocolate covering, nine times out of ten your 'tip-top' tip fell on the ground, and necessitated a scraping off the path back onto the stick, complete with traces of dog-poo, hairs and whatever other detritus the jelly picked up off the path.

They built us hard in the sixties.

They were made in Thurles by Valley Ice Cream. It went bust years ago. They made loads of ice pops, and, you know, I can't remember any of them just now

There's at least 3 shops in Newbridge that sell them - but I'm sure you'll find them in many of the older sweetie shops around the country. Haven't found any in Dublin yet though.

Does anybody else remember the ice pops made on the premises by Ladola's chipper in Cork St? There were 2 basic types, pink with a yellow top and brown with a yellow top. They had no names except pink and brown but they were delicious.
