Anyone got experience of measures third level institutions take when dealing with students found downloading porn?

    Bog standard porn.

Wasn't me hence using real name.

no problem with it in my college, everything is filtered you can hardly get into fhm!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,315 ✭✭✭ballooba

Yes but apparently there is no filters in DIT and the person in question was looking at mvies and pics etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 742 ✭✭✭Senor_Fudge

well the big risk is leaving the actual porn in your account
however if you download and move it swiftly no-one will know
i did it when i was in college and at one stage had one and a half gigs in there

    happy downloading

Most colleges have a strict policy regarding acceptable use of the Internet. It would largely depend on what was viewed, and who caught them. One or two people in my course have been brought aside by the head of the department and asked to stop looking at porn on the college network. No big deal was made, however this would probably vary from college to college.

If they were to look through logs and see that viewing porn was a common occurance, they would probably be forced to bring disciplinary procedures on the student. Most colleges have filters in place anyways, I continually got messages informing me that I had breached computer service guidelines when I was researching for a project on STI's.

I think you are missing the point.

The dude was caught already and his account is frozen, they have burned the contents to CD and he has a meet with senior staff members coming up.

There was a few movies and pics in the account, some from that day some from another day a few konths ago.

UCD has a don't interfere with others policy, so thats not a no porn for you, but no one wants to see you looking at it policy. Of course kiddy etc is a diff issue.

Whats you college policy? we see it every time we log in, we have to agree with the policy before we can log on to the netwrok

a similar incident happened to a lad i went to collage with, maynooth that is. was cought, brought infrount of disaplinary commettie, and dismissed from year with option to repeat the year in full if he paid full fees.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,951 ✭✭✭L5

I seriously doubt they'd give that harsh a punishment as to dismiss him from the year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,070 ✭✭✭hedgetrimmer

It may be a bit Stella Award-ish, but AFAIK it is legally the responsibiltiy of the college to make measures to ensure that illegal pr0n is not downloadable. That's the tack he should take if they threaten any legal action.

Bit of a silly thing to do, mind:rolleyes:

I think its more so the fact that they have to protect users from porn, in case they get sued by someone for not blocking such content. This can be someone just passing a screen and catching some goatse moneyshots or what have you, or even someone actively seeking teh filth

well in the initial point made by the thread starter his predicament wasn't entirely clear
    just trying to help anyway

it ain't a crime if ya don't get caught

 OMG  I never taught they'd go that far....

I remember being in DIT around 4 yrs ago, and a student got caught in the last row of pc's by the teacher!! Man that was sooo damn funny, but he didnt get any punishment. The whole class breaking their ****e laughing was punishment enough :D

    they would and they did!

if he's over 18 then what he did aint exactly wrong, if the college frowns upon such things then surely they can block any access to such sites? technically it is the college who is providing the porn as they are the ones providing internet access to the students and they haven't made any attempt to restrict what is viewed imo,

thats it, tell him to blame the college, if it wasn't for their computers with which he had easy access then he probably wouldn't have done it in the first place... damn colleges! damn computers! when will they ever learn?:D

Porn has it's place in education. It is often used constructively shown/used by sex therapists to really legally help people or couples who have problems in that area of life.

If it was me in the College, facing what your buddy is !. I would claim that I was genuinely trying to get a better understanding of the subject, as sex is a fact of life and everyone needs an education on what can become a real problem area due to ignorance. ;)

i doubt this was no fleeting glance at porn, dont take such a romantic view of it paddy20.

You wouldnt believe what a fast line can get you. He`d have to be either downloading kleenix box`s full of porn or child porn, either way he should be proper fúcked

UCD has an acceptable use policy which covers offensive or illegal material - a lot of porn is still illegal here. But the usage isn't monitored, so the attitude is generally, if it's legal and not bothering anyone else (say downloading it for viewing at home), there's not much need to take any action.

Usual procedure for someone found in breach of it will be to have their computer access disabled, barring a letter from the Dean of his/her faculty stating that their access must be re-enabled. Other disciplinary procedures may also happen depending on the nature of the thing, such as a guy we had recently who liked to play porn movies at full blast in the middle of the lab and fiddle with himself (I'm serious, he's a bit touched allegedly). Hacking into college systems and stuff would probably result in expulsion.

I'm sure most colleges have an acceptable usage policy embedded somewhere in that big pile of booklets you get at the start of every year.

    :)

    A quick search reveals:
    http://remus.dit.ie/DIT/itsupport/regulations/studentregs.html
Which says, depending on what he was caught looking at, could be in for the:
legal and / or disciplinary consequences of that action which may take the form of withdrawal of facilities, suspension, dismissal or prosecution.
My vote is on punishment 1. :)

That's about the best he can do. He'll still be liable for disciplinary action (for allowing his account to be misused), but it'll probably be nothing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,972 ✭✭✭SheroN

ah say all this stuff like, how it would be more in the college's interest to track down those who hacked his account rather than hounding the victim(him).

    http://www.dit.ie/DIT/itsupport/regulations/studentinfringe.pdf

This might shed some light on the matter.

They actually come down t your computer and ask you for your student card.

They then ask you if you know the reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,472 ✭✭✭Sposs

    As per the DIT Website

    "4. Discipline

Any user in breach of these regulations is liable for the legal and / or disciplinary consequences of that action which may take the form of withdrawal of facilities, suspension, dismissal or prosecution"

I have no sympathy, he knew the risks, if he wants to view porn that badly get a nice broadband connection at home ,otherwise college computers are for college work.

About 2 weeks ago a guy was looking at porn in the nerd cave in UCD. He was kicked out of college. He was masterbating while he was watching it. There were other people in the room at the time. I was there. I saw it. ohh the pain...

O-M-G  . My housemate was kicked out of UCD 2 weeks ago last Monday. Never said why but he was told he had to take a social skills course before he could reapply, he was very strange. Could it be the same guy? I have to know :D

    How is a ban inplemented.

A subject can still attend his lectures, submit essays, and use the library, etc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 189 ✭✭raster

If a user wants to visit unacceptable websites why doesn't he use the "open access" computer rooms in college, where no user/pass is required?

Given that it appears from earlier posts that the person is in DIT, I was browsing through the Student regulations.

    Have a look at 3(D):
    D. Content

The Institute’s computer facilities and services should not be used to create, send, post, download, forward, view, store or display offensive, abusive, slanderous, vulgar, threatening or defamatory messages, text, graphics, or images or material from whatever source which may put the Institute at risk of prosecution, civil action, embarrassment or loss of reputation. This includes harassment, discrimination and intimidation of individuals on the basis of race, sex, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, age marital status, family status or membership of the traveller community, etc. Specific examples include, but are not limited to, material that:

    • is sexually explicit (whether visually or in written form) including descriptions or images of nudity or sexual acts;

    .........

Now have a look at 1(C):
    C. Computers are powerful communication tools and must be used wisely. Use of these resources in a manner which contravenes these Regulations may result in disciplinary action which may include suspension or expulsion from the Institute.

And finally (just to put the final nail in the coffin), look at section 4:
    4. Discipline

Any user in breach of these regulations is liable for the legal and / or disciplinary consequences of that action which may take the form of withdrawal of facilities, suspension, dismissal or prosecution.

Having said that, I'm sure this is an issue for evcery third level institutuion in the country, nay the world! How they chose to treat it is up to them.

    *cough*
I got a very strange phone call in work the Friday evening before that Monday in question, quite relevant to this thread. I'll say no more ;)

raster - Which colleges have open access though? I would doubt any colleges are allowed by HEAnet to have unauthenticated access to computers which can access HEAnet.

Most colleges have open access machines
    they are usually located in
    - Coffee shop areas (often stand up so not nice)
    - Library (often limited by proxy to certain sites)
    - Arts faculty (always works!)

UL effectively has. There's a generic password for a generic account that apparently hasn't been changed in five years or so. The librarians sometimes give it out when they're feeling in a nice mood. It's certainly unauthenticated access. I don't know what the password is but my grilfriend does (why she was given the password I don't know, her own account still works).

There are other ways on to the network and net from there of course but this method seems unofficially official.

Well, that's a little much. Chances are that a licensed sex shop would take umbrage at sampling the products in that way so there's little the chap could do to help himself when his hearing came up. Short of telling a joke with a punchline along the lines of "so you were hoovering at 2am and you fell on it" and hoping they laugh.

Neither to NUIG to my knowledge, and the bit about unathorised access to HEAnet is correct. It's totally against the purpose of HEAnet to have Joe Pleb using it.

Also, RE: "Someone used my account"
He had 2 mpegs sitting in his acount for a few months.

More than likely he'll get a slap on the wrist or a note in his permanent record.
Course, there's a good chance they'll lock his account.

    Stupid bugger :)
Everyone knows you go to the end PC in the corner of the back row when you're "worKing".

As for the guy caught jacking off.
    Sad bastard.
There are plenty of park benches and public toilets for that kind of carry-on.

He was told that he had to take social skills classes before reapplying, UCD must be really scraping the barrell if he got in!

You could be seeing him reappearing next year in UCD but he ain't getting back into my place and thats for sure!

If the porn was tame enough I can't see him getting into too much trouble. Just play the whole "ok, it was stupid, but I was just curious... didn't want it on my computer at home in case family/housemates saw it" card. The discipline committee will just think he's a loser and take some pity on him. Slap on the wrists* and the occassional joke about it would be all he'd probably face.

    * By which I mean probably just remove his net access and maybe a temporary suspension.

Well he was in General Science (like me, but I'm 2nd year), and this year, science had the lowest points course in UCD, 280. Lower than forestry. Lower than Arts. Pretty soon it'll be AQA (All qualified aplicants).

They are pretty relaxed about the computer rules here in the nerd cave. A fantastic amount of games are played here. The reason he was kicked out was because he was masterbating when there were many people in the room. One time (when I was there) he was masterbating with someone sitting at the computer next to him. That just bad.
