Just something I've been wondering. Has anyone here tried the online version of Magic that Wizards runs?

I'm not particularly interested in subscribing or anything (I give them enough of my money for the moment), but I'm interested to find out what people think of it. Is it any good??

Its tripe, in my personal opinion.

Whats the point in being able to play electronically if you still have to buy each card you want to play with.

Personally I prefer Apprentice, as you can use any card ever printed to make your decks.

    Much better.

Hmm... found this on google: http://www.magic-league.com/Guides/ApprDownload.php

Only the links for the basic version seem to work at the above URL... so if anyone knows where to get the full version it'd be appreciated...

    Basic edition (Win95/98): http://hammer.prohosting.com/~jgkorn99/software/appr146.exe
    http://mtglink.hypermart.net/file/appr146.exe
    http://www.pokemon-trading-cards.net/apprentice/download/appr146.exe

    Dark Steel Patch: http://mtg.rpg.net.pl/download/Apprentice/darksteelupdate.zip

I'll keep searching for other sources

I think #magic.ie looks a little more inviting, don't you? I'm in there at the moment, if a few people want to join the room we could get an L bot and start using the room to co-ordinate some online games?? Just a thought...

    (QNet by the way)

    whats apprentice???

    where can i get it???

    Apprentice >> http://hammer.prohosting.com/~jgkorn99/software/appr146.exe
    Dark Steel Patch >> http://mtg.rpg.net.pl/download/Apprentice/darksteelupdate.zip

    Magic WorkStation >> http://detonator.balthost.ee/download/mws094d.exe
    MWS Magic Pack >> http://www.magicworkstation.com/download/mtg_gamepack.exe
    MWS Assistant >> http://www.mwsdata.com/download/MWSAssist.zip

All these links were working yesterday, if not let me know and I'll find some new ones or upload my copies.

Apprentice and MWS are basically unofficial programs for playing Magic Online. I only tried MWS for the first time yesterday but I have to say, so far, I think I prefer it.

    *Ahem*
I cant speak for MWS but apprentice has been out for ALOT longer than Magic Online. In fact I heard some talk that Magic Online was a way to get the money from those people who would play apprentice and never buy a card :P

I think I'll try out MWS now actually...

Where can I get games for it?

I go onto Efnet and join #apprentice to get games for apprentice.

Oh, in case I forget, there is also a program called Net Draft. Its an excellent prog for drafting online. You can host a game, select booster packs & voila. You can play your decks afterwards in apprentice :D

Join #e-draft on Efnet to find one to join or to announce yours.

    Can be found here.

Magic's the only game available for MWS so far, you can get it here:

I think this would be better as you have to download the magic work station program also or so it seems.

Edit : I take it all back, it seems pretty fúcking class. Might be some problems with find games though. Might look into buying it.

It seems to be though there might be problems somewhere down the line from WotC

Although I see they dont have the mana tap symbol as thats Trademarked or copyright, or whichever.

    Very cool though.

hrmm the magic workstation has a proxy options thingy, so i might be able to play it online :)

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,570 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ivan

Uh, I thought the proxy facilitation was for printing out Real life proxies. You know, for decks you want to build but dont have the cards for?

Also I think its limited to a single page of proxies (approx 6 copies) for the shareware version.

I've tried that Apprentice system, it's not bad actually, but I wouldn't feel confident enough to use it online yet. It's a little user-unfriendly.

I'll keep this thread in mind if I'm looking for duels.

apprentice is definitely trickier than magic workshop to use but it still does the job, you can type and explain what your doing as you do it if theres not specific functions for what youre trying to do

Yeah, its grand once you get the hang on it, i got it yesterday, and i already whooped funky round the place a few times
