Just something I've been wondering. Has anyone here tried the online version of Magic that Wizards runs?

I'm not particularly interested in subscribing or anything (I give them enough of my money for the moment), but I'm interested to find out what people think of it. Is it any good??

Its tripe, in my personal opinion.

Whats the point in being able to play electronically if you still have to buy each card you want to play with.

Personally I prefer Apprentice, as you can use any card ever printed to make your decks.

    Much better.

Hmm... found this on google: http://www.magic-league.com/Guides/ApprDownload.php

Only the links for the basic version seem to work at the above URL... so if anyone knows where to get the full version it'd be appreciated...

I think #magic.ie looks a little more inviting, don't you? I'm in there at the moment, if a few people want to join the room we could get an L bot and start using the room to co-ordinate some online games?? Just a thought...

    (QNet by the way)

    whats apprentice???

    where can i get it???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭imp

    Apprentice >> http://hammer.prohosting.com/~jgkorn99/software/appr146.exe
    Dark Steel Patch >> http://mtg.rpg.net.pl/download/Apprentice/darksteelupdate.zip

    Magic WorkStation >> http://detonator.balthost.ee/download/mws094d.exe
    MWS Magic Pack >> http://www.magicworkstation.com/download/mtg_gamepack.exe
    MWS Assistant >> http://www.mwsdata.com/download/MWSAssist.zip

All these links were working yesterday, if not let me know and I'll find some new ones or upload my copies.

Apprentice and MWS are basically unofficial programs for playing Magic Online. I only tried MWS for the first time yesterday but I have to say, so far, I think I prefer it.

    *Ahem*
I cant speak for MWS but apprentice has been out for ALOT longer than Magic Online. In fact I heard some talk that Magic Online was a way to get the money from those people who would play apprentice and never buy a card :P

I think I'll try out MWS now actually...

Where can I get games for it?

I go onto Efnet and join #apprentice to get games for apprentice.

Oh, in case I forget, there is also a program called Net Draft. Its an excellent prog for drafting online. You can host a game, select booster packs & voila. You can play your decks afterwards in apprentice :D

Join #e-draft on Efnet to find one to join or to announce yours.

    Can be found here.

Magic's the only game available for MWS so far, you can get it here:

I think this would be better as you have to download the magic work station program also or so it seems.

Edit : I take it all back, it seems pretty fúcking class. Might be some problems with find games though. Might look into buying it.

It seems to be though there might be problems somewhere down the line from WotC

Although I see they dont have the mana tap symbol as thats Trademarked or copyright, or whichever.

    Very cool though.

hrmm the magic workstation has a proxy options thingy, so i might be able to play it online :)

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,569 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ivan

Uh, I thought the proxy facilitation was for printing out Real life proxies. You know, for decks you want to build but dont have the cards for?

Also I think its limited to a single page of proxies (approx 6 copies) for the shareware version.

I've tried that Apprentice system, it's not bad actually, but I wouldn't feel confident enough to use it online yet. It's a little user-unfriendly.

I'll keep this thread in mind if I'm looking for duels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,798 ✭✭✭Funky

apprentice is definitely trickier than magic workshop to use but it still does the job, you can type and explain what your doing as you do it if theres not specific functions for what youre trying to do

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,880 ✭✭✭Raphael

Yeah, its grand once you get the hang on it, i got it yesterday, and i already whooped funky round the place a few times

    Apprentice.

    On IRC - (Efnet), #mtg, #apprentice, #mtgireland (sometimes).

Theres also an Irish clan on magic online with all the Irish players in it.

    Dave

    Definitely Apprentice, imho.

    Much higher player base.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 825 ✭✭✭MatthewVII

just out of curiosity, does anyone know how to play creatures face down in apprentice without showing ur opponent what it is? i cant seem to find how to do it, with the result that i play the thing face up and then turn it face down, allowing my opponent to se exactly what i played. es muy annoying

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,880 ✭✭✭Raphael

Funky worked out a good trick, just leave it in your hand and put down a counter

Hold shift & drag the card to the board. It comes into play face down.

That works for most things too.

If you hold shift & select the draw button, you can choose how many cards you draw.

If you hold shift & select the plus or minus to life, you can choose how much life you lose.

Experiment with it, tis pretty useful :)

How do you install a patch, im having trouble doing it (broke my HD and lost where it was installed)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 610 ✭✭✭article6

If memory serves me right, you unzip the .zip file to your main Apprentice folder. All the compressed files will go to the correct sub-folders themselves.

    Thanks, Ill try that later

I need some help on Magic Online.

I recently changed from a "dail up" BB connection to an always on Conection.
Now whenever I try to log in to MOL I get the "Your not connected" error.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,569 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ivan

Well, based on no other info, apart from these few nuggets, I'm just gonna have a guess and say its probably due to your dsl modem/router not forwarding the right ports for MOL.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 680 ✭✭✭Leman_Russ

Ok, so any idea how to fix it then? I have no idea

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,569 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ivan

Try magic online tech support :p

Or you could try googling for details on how to set up port forwarding with your router. Or contact your ISP.

OR you could try http into your router. You do this by opening your internet browser and typing in the ip of your router. Usually its something like 192.168.0.1 so type http://192.168.0.1

Then enter your username and password and look for a portforwarding tab.

Now you need to know what port to open for magic online, you could google, ask someone or open the command prompt. Then open Magic online and try to connect to the server. Next alt & tab to the command prompt and run netstat to see what ports are being used by what programs. Your firewall program may help you figure it out either.

Anyway, use the port number and tell the modem/router to forward any connections on the magic online port to your ip. You can find your ip by opening the command prompt and typing in ipconfig.

Now, how to tell your modem/router to forward any connections on the magic online port to your ip, depends on your router. I suggest contacting google, if you have any problems.

...well, you did say you had no idea ;)

Btw, by following these instructions you have agreed to a legally binding contract where you pay me €250 for services rendered*.

    * Only if you want to.

Hey, i couldnt get the pictures working for magic workstation, anyone else have that prob. Used to be big into magic, anyone know a way of playing it without spending money?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,569 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ivan

From what I can see Apprentice and MWS have kinda gone down hill since this time last year. Magic Online seems to be the big dawg now.

MagicWorkstation is still quite popular and since Detonator released the latest version it's far easier to get connected to games.

Obv. it's never going to be able to compete with the technical sophistication of MODO but hey, it's free! :)

hey all, new to this forum so sry if i miss some kind of etiquette or grammer :)

i play alot of online magic, magic-league.com is a gr8 site for Apprentice, MWS and Netdraft. (a program that lets u draft for free) and also holds regular tournaments and masters, prizes from masters include store credit on some card site, i think its magicarsenal or something the like.

i play mtgo for the multiplayer games, 6person ffa's are awesome and worth the money, u dont have to pay subscription, just buy cards like in irl.

plus online cards are way cheaper than irl, granted they arnt real cards but u use them alot more and theres a lot more ppl to play (hundreds in fact)

So anybody playing MTGO? I only started about a week ago, about to start my 2nd deck, if anybody would like to play sometime PM me your username, could use some help and Irish opponents!
