A mate of mine works in the store and he is after telling me that the laptops are back and bigger than ever. They will in around march sometime and are €1500 but are supposed to worth the huge outlay. The specs are supposed to be huge and its overall worth is about €3000.

I keep you informed although it will be next week before he hears more and i may have the specs by then.

he syas the leaflets should be in the store soon as they are really big and they want to advertise what is a great deal.

its probably gonna be this one.

    Specs:
    Intel Celeron 2.5Ghz Processor
    256MB RAM
    40GB HD
    DVD Rewriter
    15" Screen
    Shared Graphics

    €999

Im hoping its a faster one than this, a Mobile P4 would be nice with dedicated graphics

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

irishgeo, not doubting u, i`m just pessimestic.
Palance, id say that is probably it, 256 ram isnt great and its a got a shared card where as skanger says he got a a good one, hell with it, i am gonna buy it in pc world.

    The details are in...

From the 26th of Feb Aldi will be doing the following machine:

    • Pentium® 4 3.06GHz

    • Microsoft® Windows® XP

    • Ram not stated but standard would seem to be 512MB GDR RAM

    • 60GB harddisk

    • DVD-/+ R/RW

    • SXGA 15.1" screen

    • NV GeForce FX5600, 128 MB

    • Wireless LAN 11Mbit/s

The machine is from a company called Gericom www.gericom.com

Anyone got any history on these guys???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,666 ✭✭✭Imposter

Gericoms have a very bad reputation over here (Austria)

From what I hear their support isn't the best and the machines aren't all that reliable. However you could be lucky but I wouldn't take the risk.

Someone i know used to work in the legal section and she claims that was the busiest dept in the whole company.

Can't see that it's a good idea to buy a laptop on spec. alone?

What about reliability, backup, warranty? Has anyone any experience of this outfit?

I bought one like that before and it turned out to weigh a ton, terrible keyboard, no parallel port and a whole lot of other annoying stuff!

    Comments on price?

All Aldi's offers are published in the RTE Guide each week. As the guide goes on release on the Wednesday the offers that Aldi reveal the following Friday are always in it. The laptop is priced at €1499.99.

I too have read some bad things about the makers Gericom and think I'll steer away from this Aldi offer (alway got the latest Medion).

BTY, the_edge the machine you have shown does indeed seem like but its not, look more closely. Also the machine you have listed, as well as all the other specials are non English versions.

think ill take my changes as you always return anyhting up to a year after you buy it in aldi as long as you have the receipt.

    when its in the store.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 212 ✭✭paulj13

irishgeo I'm surprised at you not knowing when, your the one that started this forum with your inside info (your a useful guy to know :D ) . I already stated the date with the other info, it's from next Thursday the 26th.

As for your confidence in Aldi's return policy I commend you. However, if that machine breaks, which from what I've been reading is a very likely prospect, they'll be sending it back for repair before they let you have your money back.

here, whats wrong with the above laptop ? its top of the range and its got a direct x 9.0 graphics card !!!!!!!!! just what i need and its only 1500 !?

    whats bad about it ?
is the reputation actually that bad ? i mean 2 bad incidents on the net on some other part of the world dont shouldnt really justify x.

Err, Aldi normally use Medion based PC stuff.

Gericom were used by lidl, they were the brand of 19" flatscreen crt's that Lidl sold.

Thats good if it includes accidental damage as well as bits breaking naturally.

Lidl normally do Targa laptops (AMD CPU) which rock from what I've seen.

Both Aldi and Lidl wedge in a lot as standard , €1500 from Dell with accidental care for 24 months would not get you that spec machine with DVD+-R and Firewire and Card Reader slots.

I am not sure how good the Aldi warranty arrangements are, damn thing may be gone for weeks for a repair.

I'll think ill change it. I mean my mate works there after all. Its off to the credit union to take out €1500.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 212 ✭✭paulj13

I see your point Irishgeo but unlike an arrangement with Dell when your machine goes wrong Aldi won't replace it as PC/notebooks are note their main business. I would say as part of this deal Aldi have arranged something with a Irish based maintenance company who will fix them. Replacing them will be a last resort.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,723 ✭✭✭savemejebus

a word of warning, if you're buying this machine keep all the original packaging, as the usual thing with ALDI and LIDL guarantees is that the machine has to be sent back to germany for repair and unless it is sent back in its original box, it is not insured for the trip and the company can then say it was damaged in transit and that they are not liable for the repairs - leaving you with a hefty bill

There is an article about a Gericom 3.06GHz Smart Power available from Alid in the UK from 26 February.

    Presume it is the same.

They do say that if Aldi run out, order forms will be available until 6 March.

I think it's the same in Ireland: you can order them.

    Regard
