Pixies are doing Witnness, or whatever it will be called.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭comet

It has been confirmed that the Pixies will support Red Hot Chilli's in the Phoenix Park(they are not playing Witnness) and that is definite, Tom Dunne announced it last night on Pet Sounds.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Would be nice if they played somewhere else maybe the night before instead of having to fork out €60 to see one band, /me not being a fan of the band headlining :dunno:

Exactly, I thought they probably would have played at a smaller venue or something. Kinda lame that its a support slot too ... they will probably go on unnoticed by alot of the people who are going to see the RHCP :(

    Thank Jebus for this.

Having already seen the last two Chilis' shows here, I wasn't particularly looking forward to this. But Pixies? Oh my fugging God!

I don't fancy paying full ticket price just to see The Pixies and leave then, but I think I'd rather vomit blood than see the RHCP live.

Saw them in Munich in the early 90s and they blew me away - one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

Surely they could play a couple of nights somewhere smaller...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,269 ✭✭✭p.pete

    From chilis' website:
One of the 80's most influential alternative bands, the Pixies, have been announced as special guest for the Red Hot Chili Peppers gig at Parc Des Princes, Paris on 15th of June!
For those of you who are not yet familiar with the Pixie's sound, watch their video "Velouria" at Launch.com and find more info on a selection of label and fansites here.

(Support acts for other RHCP summer shows have not been announced yet)

As they're special guests for just one venue in Europe I seriously can't see them playing the Dublin gig. Also Phoenix Park is a slightly different venue then Parc Des Princes - so they're unlikely to be up for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭honru

Oh my god. This is ridiculous. This is New Order all over again.

Do the Pixies deserve having to play at this damn social event? Its safe to say that the majority of people who have been waiting and waiting to see this band would much prefer the confines of a relatively smaller venue, a longer setlist, and all-round better atmosphere. Headlining Witnness would have made much more sense.

I won't push my frustration at this any further, but there is now no doubt that I will be flying to England to see them, whether it be at an indoor venue or Glastonbury. Totally worth the €60+ here.

PIXIES JOIN THE CHILIS IN THE PARK (Source: MCD)
The Pixies will reunite for the first time in over ten years to perform their only Irish date at Phoenix Park on Saturday 12th June 2004 as special guests with Red Hot Chili Peppers (subject to licence). Tickets priced €59.50 (including booking fee) are on sale now from Ticketmaster Outlets Nationwide.

Original members, Frank Black, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering have reformed for a one off tour never to be repeated again.

This exclusive Irish date will be the one and only opportunity for Irish fans to see the Pixies live. This news follows last months announcement that they will play Coachella Festival in California in May. The Irish date is only the second show to be announced by the band so far.

There is only one thing to do.

Send hundreds of emails to mcd and complain.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

MCD are gonna say this anyway, to make sure that any Pixie fans buy tickets, and then "forget" to tell people that they're also playing somewhere like the Ambassador until about 2 days before the Phoenix park show.
Do the pixies have a website that we could go and spam??

Yeh, pretty dissapointed with this news myself, was hoping they'd play witness, were the crowd will actually want to see them and know them, I think i'll be travelling abroad to see aswell at a better venue

www.4ad.com/artists/catalogue/pixies/ - 4ad website used to be pixies but go to the billboard link
"the Pixies will first embark on a North American warm-up tour that will lead up to the Coachella appearance. A full-scale tour will follow, encompassing both North America and summer European festivals."

hopefully them summer european festivals include witness

i thought the pixies reforming was meant to be a joke started on the frank black website.

i expect a few more bands will be added to the line up so they will definetely only play for 30mins or so. also as it is only support they can pull out and you are stuck with the tickets.

phoenix park is the worst venue ever too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

Frank Black likes playing in Ireland though, as does Kim Deal, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was an extra low-key announced sometime.

Other than that, I'd give anything to see them play, except stand in the Park with a concert whose audience is made up mainly from Leaving Cert students celebrating the end of secondary school life, and who wouldn't recognise the most influential rock band of the late 80's/early 90's if Black Francis came up and bit them on their Tommy Hilfiger asses.

    Funny because it's true...

I really, REALLY hope they play somewhere else.

well it was in the sun today so it must be true

f*ck it anyway, gonna be a shít atmosphere for the pixies

This pretty much sums up the attitude on this thread. Ok so there’s a possibility the Pixies will go unappreciated but ye are talking as if only a select few individuals which includes ye can appreciate the Pixies music. Oh my god, the horror of having to stand next to a neanderthal leaving cert student, they couldn't possibly appreciate good music!! I know people want to see them in the olympia or something and I think that is a very likely thing to happen the night before but for gods sake relax. Just maybe, if this band are as good as people say they are live then they might rock the crowd!!! If they do announce a small venue tickets will be very hard to get anyway, you'll end with half the crowd probably not knowing a Pixies song but just going to say they went (the usual ****..). My advice is if you are a Pixies fan go to the gig and stop moaning.
BTW I am far from being a leaving cert student but as far as I know it’s on in the middle of the exams so most of them won't be there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

I'm not going to go for the simple fact that I hate, despise huge crowds, and that's what will be there. Normally I would only go for small seated gigs. I'm 5'1 and female. I can't see over people.

Lot's of bitter people here. Maybe the people going to see the chillis will hear the Pixies and actually like them? I only heard their music myself 2 years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭RichyX

Can't blame people for not knowing the Pixies, they haven't exactly done much in the last few years to get themselves into the general publics conscience.
I'd never even heard of them before last year, and that was only through that JJ72 prat Mark Greaney sayng that their new album will be all Pixies influenced or something.

The Chili Peppers are a decent band that just happen to have alot of mainstream appeal, no matter what you whining alt rock eejits want to say :p
It was through them that I got into plenty of decent rock.

There won't be that many leaving cert students at the Chili Peppers gig.
Most of the little feckers don't finish their exams until like a week after :D

im missing my 60 euro a lot less since i heard the pixies were playing, true its a bad venue for them but i think it will be a good day. hopefully the final line up will be decent. and after all once people who would have not heard them before might like them. can only be a good thing.

as for the leaving cert thing, there will be people of all ages there. get over yourselves.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 69 ✭✭rodney.redneck

i have to say ye all have your heads up your arses. granted the pixies are a fantastic band and far superior to the chillis but some of the **** ye are comin out with...like you would get sick if you had to watch the chillis etc, etc, yawn, etc.

guaranty you, if the chillis were a local band and you happened to stumble upon them in some small local music venue you would think they were the business. you would then proceed to preach the wonders of the band from within your own little elitist fanbase and slag them off when they went mainstream.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Err, no, I think you'll find the problem is that the Chillis make awful music, nothing to do with being elitist or "up our own arses".

It's not because they're mainstream, it's because they're bad. Maybe if they didn't make pop music they'd be bearable.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 69 ✭✭rodney.redneck

i thought your simple mind would take that interpretation of my email. i never said you had to like the chillis, personally i think they are average but do have some really catchy tunes and if i was goin along to see one of my favourite bands (pixies), i would willingly spend the money to go there and would consider it a bonus to get the chance to see another live band.

also, read your own email, you use the word mainsteam in a way that suggests you hate everything that would be categorised this way. i would suggest that you hate mainstream music because of its inherent nature of having widespread appeal i.e YOU are a snob.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Rodney, look back before you post, I changed that post of mine because I thought it would be interpreted that way and that wasn't my intention.

I didn't mean mainstream but rather pop-music (instead of rock/metal/whatever).

I don't like the RHCP because I don't like their music. I like plenty of mainstream bands if their music is good. [hippy] It's all about the music maaan [/hippy]

Oh and you don't know me so lay off the dumb insults okay? You might consider it a bonus so that's good for you (value for money etc), but personaly I don't want to hear the RHCP, why is that a problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Plus it doesn't help that someone here in work plays them all the time, every day :)

Oh puh-lease. As a band, I actually don't mind the Red Hot Chili Peppers, good musicians et al. But to think of The Pixies playing second-base in a GIANT field where the majority people who are as musically narrow-minded as the next guy is just a wasted opportunity to me; I think they at least deserve to play a headlining show or festival instead (note that these European dates *may* be the last time The Pixies will play over here, ever). Many people feel the same way.

Granted, you're probably content with them supporting the RHCP, fair enough, enjoy the day. I can't, I just can't see this band as "special guests" to the RHCP. I'd rather spend the €60 going over to the UK.

Personally, this has got nothing to do with the Chillis, more to do with the fact that I'd have to fork out loads of money to get to the gig and see the Pixies for a short time with that pre-the-gig-is-about-to-start feeling...

...It's just not the right way to catch a band that have'nt played here since, what... ...'91? (Correct my memory) And they come back as a support act? It just doesn't seem right.

im going purely to see the pixies, i know the chillis are going to be a huge let down after seeing them in slane over the summer. they were brilliant there only because of the dvd being recorded.

I think if enough Pixies/FB fans showed up, gathered from all over europe... then maybe we could outnumber the Chilli fans, and boo the chillis off the stage :D
Ah I don't have a problem with the Chillis, I thought 'By the way' was reasonably good... still though, I'm disgusted that the Pixies are the supporting band, and that I'd have to pay big fat RHCP prices to see them.

Either way you think about it, the gig is going to be great. Ibought a chilis ticket cause big gig n all in the hope of good support and then they announced the pixies. They even put ads on at time saying just pixies and chili's small thing at the end

The ads are gone weird. They trying to get all the pixies fans. Alot of chili's fans are waiting for the new album to come out first before they buy tickets so but pixies mainly on ad's will sell more tickets right now.

if the pixies get booed, ill be starting a riot, noone can get away with booing te pixies.
i hope they get to play a nice long set and dont get treated like a normal warm up, who usually get something like 45mins to get on stage play all the stuff and get off again.

I heard someone say that too, but I saw it this evening...

...and it in fact advertises "The Pixies, special guests to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers".

I think it's a good move, and a sign that it's more of a double headline than a main act and a support (though it will always be a RHCP show...)

I got my tickets the other day they read like Headline / Undercard

    RED HOT CHILI PEPERS
    special guests

    The Pixies

But It hardly matters what order / who's name is first - 2 great bands are going to play a great gig - that's it !
    no problem!

still, a valid assertion i believe.
rhcp arent that bad, im a pixies fan myself but have been to a litany of concerts.
i have seen clips on tv of the rhcp live, and they look like they could be worth going to.

    anyway, the pixies!!!
my sister has seen them twice in their original incarnation (national concert hall and sfx(not sure about latter venue)) and she said they were amazing.

ive seen pictures of charles recently tough, whooaaah that guy is big

There should be another band if not two more. It'll be another while until they announce who tho.
